We don't even have hotels. :D

Nor traffic lights. Really, you wouldn't believe it. I lived here for 18 years, then in Amsterdam for 7 years, and when I went back again -- major culture shock!

Oh wow, I can imagine! Yeah, I guess we're not quite that rural, athough we probably would be if not for the college.

    So, do anything exciting today?

I've been to a party of a mutual friend of me and my brother, Brigitte. She was promoted to doctor. My brother kept introducing me as "my misfit brother", which was great fun...

Afterwards, in the evening, we went to his -- my brother's -- boat at the Prinsengracht (Amsterdam canal) and he kept acting like James Spader in one of those Molly Ringwald films. So I said, "Who needs a mother-in-law with a brother like that?" Wrong move -- naturally, it got worse after that.

Oh man, that has to be rough.

Holy crap, I have to go close up shop, then we're going to the fair, so I won't be around until later tonight. If I don't see you have a good one.

    :)

    Wick-ed...

I saw a film about 9/11: it was actually a documentary made by two French brothers about a rookie fireman. They had been following him for some months, when they happened to film the first crash into the tower (you know the one).

In the next hours, you saw how all those firemen rushed into the first tower ("the fireman rushes in"), busy co-ordinating and delegating, running, et cetera. You saw them talking to each other, jumping up whenever there was that weird crash thump you hear when someone has jumped and lands on the ground (the sound of a drum filled with glass fragments, I thought) then quickly discussing again, obviously in half-shock. They were trying to escort people to ambulances, some of them were on fire -- those people came running down the stairs, screaming, and on fire. Unbelievable.

Some of the firefighters were dead at the end of the documentary.

It was quite heavy. I'm still a bit dizzy because of it.

    Wow.

That sounds amazingly intense. I've seen quite a few programs/documentaries of a similar sort, but over here they're really careful not to show anything too graphic.

As if the images of airplanes crashing into skyscrapers isn't enough.

Yeah. Even that is still hard to see. And the people jumping down, somehow in their blind panic thinking that might be some sort of escape.

    Yeah, it's truly shocking.

And as much as we want to deny it, we have to admit that we've become somewhat desensitized to it, come to accept it as a part of history just like the history of even more horrible atrocities that permeates the legacy of our society... as it ceases to be the moment and becomes "an event".

    Woah, sorry about that. :D

Yeah, those things get iconized quite quickly. Two spotless towers, a plane, a flag -- it's immediately an image, an icon.

You hear that 3,000 people died, and it doesn't mean anything at first, it's just a casualty number. Only later, you hear someone's story on TV, or in my case on the street and at a store a couple of times, and that's when you start to think: "This story x 3,000 = ...Whoa." Beyond comprehension. (And it should be; you can't mourn all those individual cases or it'll drive you crackers).

Or you hear they found a heart and a bit of tissue. "This was your husband, ma'am." How can someone live with that?

I know, it really is impossible to comprehend, and like you said, if you did you probably wouldn't be able to take it.

Just to think about it too much can be maddening, but our culture is built around escapes.

Yeah, we need that. It's essential. Without dreams, no reality. We couldn't take reality if there would be no escape from it.

Yeah, but I'll still contend that it would be better to have a reality we didn't need to escape from.

Either that or we need some way better escapes, because most of the time I feel gyped.

Hehe. Sell your Nintendo and write an angry letter to God. ;)

No, I don't know. Whenever I have that train of thought, one of those in which all those terms like dreams and reality and escape start to mingle with each other, I always drop it and think, "Sod that, it won't help me to peel the potatoes for dinner tonight."

No kidding, but they're not really escapes if you're thinking about them. Sometimes focusing only on the task at hand can be an escape in itself.

One great thing is the internet. It can be an escape, but it can also be a great way of becoming more connected with people you would have otherwise had no chance to ever meet. Of course, we've talked about this before.

    Say, have you tried this?

    Well, now I have. ;)

I'm working on the thing for the task right now, I'm adding a slightly more autobiographical and personal twist to it.

Also, for the reunion -- can't we just announce it here, as a thread? The housemates that read it, obviously pay attention and take an interest, so we'll only have enthusiastic guests!

I was telling about a 9/11 documentary I saw, that one was quite heavy; it threw me a bit.

And you? Had a good sleep after our nightly encounter?
