Agreed, especially given Pronger's age and that he is in the last year of a contract. However, if he can help lead them to the cup this year, it was worth it. However, given the team's goaltending woes, I am not sure that he will.

The Flyers just continue to struggle in finding the right goaltender. They can't develop goalies in the minors and they don't have a good free agent/trade track record. This team hasn't had a good goalie since Hextall and they haven't had a great goalie since Pelle Linberg died.

 

Same here. I understand that they wanted to move Lupul's contract, but there has to be a better way to do it than giving up Sbisa (who was a 1st round pick) and two future first round picks! Three first round picks for Chris Pronger? I don't know what they were thinking.

 

Bob McCown said it best in his Hockey Arguments book. If the Flyers had Patrick Roy on any of their teams from the mid 90s 'til now, they would have won at least three Cups.

Ray Shero the Penguins GM said this about their first round draft pick Simon Despres. I am glad that the Penguins did not draft a Center like I said in a post above. We got a very big talented Offensive-Defencemen at #30. He won't be suiting up in a Penguins uniform anytime soon because he has alot to learn in terms of Hockey IQ and when to "try" and make plays and when not to.

Also, I love that the Penguins drafted Ulf Samuelsson's son, Philip. Hopefully he'll turn out the be just as fiesty as his father.

The 1970 Draft

The draft actually started in 1963, on a limited basis. I'm starting in 1970, though, because this is the notorious draft in which the Canucks lost a coin toss, and had to go second (Buffalo and Vancouver both joined the NHL that year). Having to go with Tallon hurt, but worse is that they could have had a more successful player. Leash, MacLeish, and Sittler were all better than Tallon.

An uncharacteristic year; Montreal had two picks, and flubbed one completely (Martnyiuk never made the bigs at all, the only player not to do so) and Lefley was a journeyman. In these days, Montreal generally didn't make mistakes like that.

Toronto usually flubbed their choices; not this time. Perrault and Sittler were the most successful first-round players in this year.

 

The 1971 Draft

1971 was the notorious draft in which Montreal traded journeymen players to a poor team to make sure that the team whose draft first over all pick they owned finished last. They wanted Guy Lafleur, who went first; Marcel Dionne went second, and was also a star. Typically, Vancouver, who picked third, did't do as well, but in the first round, only Boston and Chicago whiffed it. Murray Wilson, whom the Habs also chose, was a poor pick, but they did better in the second round and took Larry Robinson; however, their other two second round picks were whiffs. (Montreal wasn't really as good at drafting as they pretended; they just had so many draft picks, they couldn't entirely fail).

 

1972 Draft

An extremely rich draft in which the Islanders choose very well, getting good/decent choices in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th and 10th rounds. (Billy Harris, Lorne Henning, Bob Nystrom, Richard Brodeur, & Gary Howatt)

Montreal got Steve Shutt; Philly got Bill Barber, and Vancouver, typically got a journeyman with the third choice.

The Rangers had a very poor draft, whiffing nearly every round. (Only one of their draft choices played in the NHL, and then only four games). Boston was also poor.

I have a bunch of old OHL and CHL magazines at home from the late 80's and early 90's... Every so often i like to pull them out and look at the draft recaps for those years... So interesting!

 

It's quite fascinating, yes.

 

1973 is another rich draft. The Islanders got Denis Potvin; the Flames, Tom Lysiak (though they whiffed their other first round choice); Toronto got Lanny McDonald and Ian Turnbull; the Rangers got Rick Middleton. Montreal got Bob Gainey, but whiffed rounds two and three.

Buffalo should have known better than draft a kid named Morris Titanic, for godsakes.

 

The 1974 draft is interesting. Washington had the first choice and chose Greg Joly, a mistake. They had no better luck in the lower rounds.

Montreal had four first-round choices; they whiffed two and got two journeymen with the others.

The team with the best draft was probably NYI, who got Clark Gillies in the first round and Bryan Trottier in the second.

Boston whiffed the first round, but got Mark Howe in the second.

Vancouver actually managed a decent lower round pick: Harold Snepts in the 4th.

 

The 1975 NHL Draft was generally very disappointing.

The first round didn't yield a single star; and Montreal, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Washington all whiffed.

California did chose Dennis Maruk in the second round--he did well; and in one of the most notorious choices in NHL history, LA chose Dave Taylor 210th (15th round). He would play more games in the NHL than any other player chosen this year.

 

1976 Draft was another disappointment...Rick Green was a good first over all choice, and Bernie Federko was chosen 7th by St. Louis, and the rest were whiffs or journeymen.

 

The 1977 Draft was another odd one. Dale McCourt and Barry Beck, the first two choices, were good enough, but there were only two durable stars in the first round: Doug Wilson (by Chicago) at 6th and Mike Bossy at 15th (by the Islanders). The Islanders also took John Tonelli in the second round, and the Habs, after choosing poorly in the first, got Rod Langway and Gordie Roberts in the 2nd and 3rd.

 

The 1978 Draft was an improvement--Bobby Smith (1); Ryan Walter (2); Ken Linseman (7); and Brad Marsh (11) were all very good.

In the second round, Vancouver got Curt Fraser, Toronto got Joel Quenville, and Buffalo got Tony McKegney.

There were several good choices in the lower rounds, too.

 

I always hear about what a great junior player McCourt was.

 

Great junior players do not always = great NHL players

The 1979 Draft was one of the best years, with highly successful choices in all six rounds, most notably Ray Bourque in the first round and Mark Messier in the third round.

 

That was a deep draft, with the likes of Glenn Anderson and Dirk Graham going in the later rounds!

 

There were more than six rounds in those days.

 

The thing that really sticks out so far is how well the Islanders (a team I absolutely loved) drafted, not just in the first round (eg Potvin and Bossy) but also later on to get guys like Nystrom.

 

Yes; but then it just ended, even though they had the same personnel. A large part is luck, I guess.
