Some good news (other than the 4-0 win last night) came in the form of Curt Schilling's MRI back in Boston, which showed nothing structurally wrong with the right shoulder. The plan is to reexamine Schilling on Friday, and it may be determined then whether he'll miss his next start.

Celtics director of basketball operations Danny Ainge recently acknowledged that he has been in talks with the Minnesota Timberwolves about acquiring Kevin Garnett. One reported deal would send Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff, and the fifth pick in next week's NBA draft to the T-wolves for the All-Star forward. A league source confirmed that the two teams have been in talks, but are not close to a deal.

The Red Sox, in separate announcements today, have placed Curt Schilling on the 15-day disabled list, and that Josh Beckett will make the start in place of Schilling on Sunday in San Diego. Beckett would be going on normal rest. The Sox have not yet announced who would take Schilling's spot on the roster, though the consensus is that it will be Jon Lester.

Back to the Schilling thing, it appears that they have not yet placed him on the DL, but they intend to do so tomorrow.

After the Red Sox bats lit up Atlanta Braves pitching for 11 runs and our pitching blanking them, the Sox head off for the west coast, with the first destination being San Diego for the last interleague series of the season with the Padres starting tomorrow. As two of the three games will have late start times (10:05 PM ET), don't expect very many updates. [face_plain]

In news from the farm, Portland Sea Dogs RHP Clay Buchholtz has been tabbed to appear in the All-Star Futures Game, to be played during All-Star week on July 8 at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Buchholtz will play for Team United States against the World Team, consisting of the best international prospects in the minor leagues. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 with a 4:00 PM ET start. Buchholtz is 5-2 w/ a 1.82 ERA in 13 starts for Portland, striking out 100 while walking only 18 in 74 innings this year.

EDIT: Pawtucket Red Sox OF Jacoby Ellsbury was also chosen to represent the US team in the All-Star Futures Game. Ellsbury is batting .331 w/ 0 HR and 20 RBI in 245 AB this year between AA Portland and AAA Pawtucket.

Along with officially announcing the hiring of new head coach Claude Julien yesterday, the Bruins also announced that owner Jeremy Jacobs has been elected as chairman of the NHL's Board of Governors. The Bruins also unveiled new logos (see image below), including a new "B Wheel" that features changes to the spokes to improve legibility.

Embedded is a hilarious short film done by a Boston native about Roger Clemens wanting to pitch for the Yankees in 2057...which would make him 95 years old. [face_laugh]

Daisuke Matsuzaka struggled with his control again in the first inning, but outdueled Greg Maddux through 6 innings and the Red Sox got stellar bullpen work in their 2-1 win last night in San Diego. Kevin Youkilis and Jason Varitek each had RBI singles in the 4th inning for the Red Sox runs.

The NHL held the first round of their entry draft last night in Columbus, OH, and the Bruins, not getting a trade for a #1 goaltender, chose C Zach Hamill with the 8th overall pick. Hamill, from British Columbia, posted 32 goals and 61 assists in 69 games for the WHL's Everett Silvertips last season, and appears to be cut from the same cloth as current Bruins center Marc Savard.

Tom Watson shot a 7-under-par 65 to give himself a one-shot lead over Tom Purtzer after the opening round of the first of the two big Boston-area golf tournaments of the summer, the Champions Tour's Bank of America Championship at Nashawtuck Country Club in Concord. John Jacobs was third with a 67, and eight players carded a 68 to tie for 4th after one round. Bad weather continued to plague the tournament: there were two rain delays totaling 3 hours, 13 minutes in an event which was washed out by heavy rain last year.

Just a bit of a setback last night, as Padres shortstop Khalil Greene smacked a pair of homers and Chris Young struck out 11 en route to defeating the Red Sox 6-1. The series concludes this afternoon with a matchup of possible All-Star Game starters: Josh Beckett (10-1, 3.14 ERA) for the Red Sox and Jake Peavy (9-1, 1.98 ERA) for the Padres.

Tom Purtzer fired a 4-under-par 68 yesterday to take command of the Bank of America Championship at 10-under-par through 2 rounds, good for a 3-shot lead going into today's final-round play. A group of 7 was tied for second at 7-under-par, including first-round leader Tom Watson and Jay Haas.

The Red Sox got 8 strong innings from Josh Beckett, David Ortiz and Mike Lowell each had RBI singles in the third inning, and Jason Varitek added a solo homer in the 8th inning to get a 4-2 win to close out the series with the San Diego Padres. Jonathan Papelbon worked a perfect 9th inning with 2 strikeouts for his 18th save. The win, combined with a 7-2 Yankee loss in San Francisco, means that the Sox' lead over the Yankees is back up to 11.5 games. The Toronto Blue Jays are now in second place in the division, 11 games in back of the Sox.

In a bit of sad Red Sox-related news, former Giants All-Star closer Rod Beck, who pitched for the Red Sox from 1999 to 2001, has passed away at the age of 38. The cause of death was not immediately known, but Beck had checked into drug rehab while he was with the Padres in 2004, which was his last year of major league action.

To tie up the loose ends from the weekend, Jay Haas shot a 6-under-par 66 yesterday to win the Bank of America Championship at 13-under-par, 3 shots better than Leonard Thompson and Brad Bryant. Second-round leader Tom Purtzer struggled in the final round, shooting a 1-over-par 73 to finish 4th at -9.

The Red Sox start a three-game series in Seattle tonight, with Julian Tavarez (5-4, 4.50 ERA) set to go for the Red Sox against the Mariners' Jeff Weaver (1-6, 8.56 ERA). The Sox have also announced that lefty Kason Gabbard will be called up from Pawtucket to make the start in Curt Schilling's place tomorrow. Outfielder David Murphy, who had been taking Schilling's spot on the roster since Schilling was placed on the DL Friday, will likely be optioned to Pawtucket to make room for Gabbard on the roster.

For anyone that missed it, along with the new logo(s) Richie posted, the Bruins also unveiled their new uniforms which pay tribute to the glory years of the 1970's.

IMO, these uniforms kick some serious *ss and I only hope Bruins management can put enough talent in them to make the Bruins relevant again.

Dice-K will be coming out with a CD compilation of favorite and inspirational songs, titled "Music From The Mound", which will be available in stores on July 17 (no, he does not sing on the CD). The CD will include a new, original track, "Gyro Ball", which will feature performances by former J. Geils harmonica player Magic Dick, former Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, and NESN announcers Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy. A portion of the proceeds from the CD, as well as downloads of "Gyro Ball", will benefit the Red Sox Foundation. More info on the CD can be found at http://www.dicekcd.com

The Red Sox returned home last night after being swept in Seattle by the Mariners. Yesterday's game should've been a beauty, as Dice-K limited the M's to one run over 8 innings, but the Sox couldn't hit themselves, and the game went into the 11th inning until Joel Piñeiro gave up a walk to Ichiro and an RBI double to Jose Lopez for the 2-1 loss.

The Sox also announced that Curt Schilling would be re-examined on Monday and would not begin throwing until at least then, meaning that Schilling will likely not return until after the All-Star break.

"Trader Danny" Ainge, true to form, picked Georgetown F Jeff Green with the #5 overall pick in last night's NBA Draft, then shipped him off to Seattle, along with Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West, for 7-time All-Star shooting guard Ray Allen and the Supersonics' second round pick (which turned out to be LSU F Glen Davis). Whether this was just a move to placate captain Paul Pierce (who had been complaining that he wanted good veteran help) or a move that actually makes the Celtics competitive remains to be seen, and the dealing may not be done yet. To round out the C's draft activity, they also took Southern California G Gabe Pruitt with their second round pick (#32 overall).

For local connections, Boston College F/C Sean Williams (#17 overall by the New Jersey Nets) and F Jared Dudley (#22 overall by the Charlotte Bobcats) were taken in the first round, the first time that 2 BC players were taken in the first round of the same draft. Also, UMass F Stephane Lasme was taken by the Golden State Warriors in the second round (#46 overall), and Providence College F/C Herbert Hill ended up with the Philadelphia 76ers by way of the Utah Jazz's second round pick (#55 overall).
