so this week i did the adelaide/kangaroo island thing. very nice places, both of them. i've just about reached the halfway point of my stay here, and so far besides sydney, i've visited... adelaide and kangaroo island.

any other suggestions? i'm hoping to get down to melbourne one weekend, and i'll prolly do queensland with my family when they come in june. is canberra worth a visit? the red center? suggestions? anyone? bueller? bueller?

    (love the Ferris Bueller quote)
Canberra isn't really worth visiting, but it can be kinda fun.
Red Centre is basically a rock in the desert. that's about it.
Darwin is hot, humid, but pretty cool.
Perth (from what I've heard) is pretty good.
Brisbane: Nice place to visit. usually warm with nice beaches.
Cairns: Great place to visit. very touristy, but great nonetheless.

Canberra is pretty quiet. Nice to see parliament house, do the embassy drive thing, and maybe go to the war memorial and stuff. Not much else, really.

And what do you mean what is worth visiting?

You havent met me yet ;)

If you actually plan out your trip to Canberra, you'll spend about one day there, assuming you start early and finish with a trip to black mountain tower at night

    Other places to visit

If your into bushwalking, and you have your own transport, head off to the Warrumbungles near Coonabarabran, they are the only mountain range in western nsw, on a good day you see all the way over to Dubbo, i've done a couple of years back, when i get back into shape, i'm doing it again for sure

used to do the warrumbungles with my family a lot, we all come from the Cowra/Parkes area. Siding Springs observatory is worth a look.

Go out to Canowindra and go hot air ballooning! I'm hoping to get to the balloon festival this year...

mmm so many places to visit in Australia... Nevermind, I'm hitting the US in 3-4 weeks - LA, Texas, NY, Toronto, Boston & Ohio!

Yeah, I'd have to suggest Melbourne proper and definately Far North Queensland. Don't spend more than a day in Canberra or Brisbane, but make that day a REALLY full one. Avoid Surfers - it's just night clubs and Japanese tourist shops. Byron Bay is a must see and any section of rainforest or bush.

You should also spend a day at a beach. Any beach, they're all good. I would have to say that I have travelled from Melbourne to Cairns and the best beaches I have ever seen are in Newcastle. That's a fact.

when does beach-season end? i mean, it's already starting to get cold on certain days, but when does it tend to get and stay too cold for the beach?

It depends where you are. If in Tasmania, there are four days a year to choose from to go to the beach, if you are in Cairns, it's too cold to go to the beach when the temperature goes all the way down to 28 degrees celcius (they put jumpers on).

Rule of thumb, though, it's okay to go to the beach if the wind is still and the sun is shining :p

we dont have a "season" so to speak, the water remp doesnt change all that much in winter over here. in fact the surf is better in winter and the temp only drops 2-4 degrees here in NSW, Melbourne drops a bit more, QLD i have never been cold surfing up there.

The water usually gets warmer in winter as well, so swimming in the beach is still good fun.

Or, Keith, if you own a wetsuit, as I do, then any day's beach day.
