Here is the working concept for a digital environment for the Emperor's Throne Room on Coruscant. It was very much influenced by a painting by Ralph McQuarrie and gothic architecture.

    Emperor's Coruscant Throne Room

While I am happy with it, I still look at images by artists on 3dtotal, and my shot still lacks the realism brought by those artists. What can I do to improve it?

to improve it, I would say to work on textures, and to make it less gothic. It doesn't look star wars enough. If you don't look the window at the back, it looks like a church or cathedral. For exemple, the window on top could be more stylised. You should add some metalic futuristic stuff. I'm thinking about the jedi council or archives. There are pillars, or great floors, but there are also some glowing stuffs, automatic doors... You used the same material everywhere, you should make some different colors. That's all so far

Good modelling. You should scan this concept drawing you are talking about. It's hard to imagine this being the Emperor's room. At the end of EP2 it looks like he's making his own palace that is using more dark materials. This does look more like a church, or Jedi Council building. The good guys throne room.

Funny you should mention 3Dtotal. There are a ton of tutorials over there that specifically show you how to make your image look just like the ones you see in the gallery. I'm sure your lighting could use more work but I agree with Dr.Jones that the materials need to be upgraded the most.

looks more like a hallway instead of a room for an emperor ;)

This is the production painting I was influenced by in modeling the room. Ralph McQuarrie Painting

I tried to capture the hazy, yellow look in the painting, rather than going for the obvious, dark and creepy feel. Also, I've thought that Palpatine's actual throne room would be much more stately; what I've done is somewhat more like a "living room."
