WT*!?

    I hate intelectual chauvinists.

Sorry, dar eu m-as cruci daca ar lua vreun SF Oscar.
Niste filme extraordinar de bune in competitie. "There Will Be Blood" este pentru mine cel mai tare film facut vreodata. M-a lipit pur si simplu in scaun, strafulgerata. De asemenea, "No Country for Old Men" este un film colosal, si-a meritat toti laurii.

So, I love SF dar imi pastrez discernamantul.

And it was science-fiction.

Think inainte sa generalizezi in asa hal.

    No comment. Nu are rost.

In afara de there will be blood si juno si atonement au fost cam slabe filmele.

Since when are Oscars given to pictures or people that actually deserve them?

First and foremost, the Awards are a good excuse for the movie industry to display itself in all its decadent glory.

There have always been some favourites: movies that focus on human emotion, on characters (i.e. movies where nothing seems to happen), love stories, musicals and sometimes stuff that has to do with history or historical figures.
They also have un-favourites: the action/adventure genre has been overlooked, and unfortunatelly, Sci-Fi movies tend to go into this category ... at best, they score for special effects.

I understand why awards for acting are hard to come by when dealing with Sci-Fi movies - given that, most of the times, no great acting skill is required - but why not best movie, best director or best script?
What was so great about West Side Story, The Silence of the Lambs, The English Patient or Shakespeare in Love? Quite a few things, you might say, but nothing that can't be found in other films.
Titanic: critics proclamed it a masterpiece - and who's to say they were wrong - but 11 gold statues?

Fact of the matter is that an Academy Award is the Hollywood equivalent of 42.

    (Purely fictional example:
"Cyber, what's the cosine of PI/4?"
"Um...yeah...hold on a second..." - doesn't have a bloody clue - "...hey, I got it!..." - still with no clue, but a confident, genial smile - "[And the winner of the Cosine of PI/4 category is...] 42!")

The horrid truth is that nobody in this wide world could say which is the best movie made this year.
Alas, the worthy people at the Film Academy just throw in their two cents. Mostly, they try to keep things balanced and cause as little controversy as possible. At times, they give awards to compensate for past mistakes and sometimes, they give awards just to avoid any charges of discrimination. Since there are no rules or criteria, they can't be proven wrong. :)

PS: That Daniel Day-Lewis guy should be lynched just for the way he dressed up for the ceremony.
Haven't seen his performance, but it had better be good if he beat Johnny Depp to that Oscar.

@Milena: He is, trust me. That movie is a must. See it and we'll talk about it. I am actually looking forward to that.
@Diva: Hon, you expressed your opinion, I expressed mine. They can coexist in any real or fictitional environment. :)
@Cyber: Este OK. Nu e nevoie sa ma dovedesc a fi intelectuala in fata ta, ci doar in fata cuiva ce are o oaresce relevanta.

Obviously they can't din moment ce nici un film SF nu a castigat vreodata un premiu Oscar cu oaresce relevanta. :D

That's why they are called "opinions" and not "dictates".

I believe the more apropiate word is "prejudice".
