No, it wasn't. I'm not going to go looking for it on the temp boards because getting logged out is annoying, but people who support same-sex marriage thought it skewed the results. I thought that was crap. If people think they are right, what does it matter? (Though I guess I'm saying this as a particularly opinionated person.) Going by the results so far, I was right. As always.

To clarify my vote, I don't believe in same-sex or opposite sex marriage, so I voted against same-sex marriage period.

I think that it should be separated from churches. The legal system mediates changes of next of kin and family membership as well as legal contracts to share assets. So, basically, I think everyone should be able to have a civil/legal union of whatever kind they want regardless of their gender, blood relation, or number. But leave marriage to churches.

I think it's the easiest and most fair way to fix it.

Were I married in the Catholic Church, what the United States government says would not change the fact that I would consider myself married to my wife. Any other person who considers themselves married in a religious sense, in my opinion, should feel the same way, although I don't object to them fighting for legal benefits.

On checking, I was the one that brought up the suggestion on anonymity. And at the time, or shortly after, the support for same-sex marriage in that poll was at 97.4% for allowing same-sex marriage, with 41 in favor and 1 against. (that number dropped on the temp boards over time from there). So the call for having the poll be anonymous came from me, not from people that oppose same-sex marriage.

I remember there being a few people who thought the results were so skewered that I should have just made it anonymous. At least 3 people. But anyways, it doesn't really matter that much. I just wish they would explain/defend their positions (like a few people in this thread already have), but they don't have to if they don't want to.

I'll be interested to see if the percentages here happen to be very different in a month or so from those on the temporary board's poll (not everyone is back yet).

I also wish I could start over with a new poll option for "don't believe the government should be involved in marriage at all" (though I really don't get that argument, especially with the popularity of civil marriages)... but it's too late now. I'll save that for a future version of this thread, in a year or so from now.

If the marriage is civil ie. non-religious in nature, then there is no point in it beyond gaining benefits such as visitation in a hospital, and tax breaks.

If government marriage did not exist, we would have no tax breaks to extend, and a couple would simply draft up a document saying that they consider each other to have visitation rights, rights to each others property, etc., and therefore, there would be no reason to have a civil union., or any form of legal marriage.

But that's insane. For the first part, a private document drafted in that way would probably not be enforceable. Not to say someone can't get a lawyer to draw up an air-tight contract, but simply that the cost would be prohibitive. At best, most people would opt for something like Legal Zoom. The cookie-cutter approach to legal writing leaves huge gaps by failing to take the specific circumstances into account. Why do I say this matters? A non-enforceable contract is not much of an issue when no one is trying to contest it. But what happens when an employer wants to stop paying a pension to the "widow" of the deceased, or another family member decides they want the estate? If the contract is not legally recognized and enforceable, people will get steam-rolled. It makes far more sense for the government to have a pre-packaged, guaranteed set of rights and benefits that partners afford each other, and that all other parties are obligated to honor. This pre-made legal understanding is what we call "marriage." Saying the gvoernemtn should step away from the religious implications (eg call it civil unions) is fine, but it seems pretty crazy to say they should have no role at all.

How is marriage not equally cookie cutter? I mean legal zoom could just have a standard "like what marriage was" form and its solved.

They can not have a role, because they can't do it right.

The government's role is make it as difficult as possible for you to function without them, don't buy into their product, and their power ceases to exists.

We like to call it, peaceful protest.

If people took the time and energy they spend worrying about what goes on in other people's bedrooms, and devoted that to their own, they would be a lot better off, and the world would be a happier place.

Preventing bigots from procreating is an unintentional perk of being gay. I love the fact that what I get up to in the bedroom enrages certain types of people so much they probably have no bedroom lives of their own.

I'm not really a fan of the "in the bedroom" thing. Being gay has a whole lot more to with it than sex. I'm not speaking directly to those who have used it in this thread, I'm talking about it in general... how it's so widely used when talking about orientation.

Of course there is more to being gay than just sex. But the excuse people use for being disgusted by gays is "But the penis is supposed to go there, not there." When the go to argument for anti-gay rights campaigners is "It's not natural" the most effective counter argument can only be "What goes on in the bedroom doesn't effect you."

True, but to them, they are gaining power over you (which they are) by denying you something that they can have. It's a classic example of control...kind of like putting a banana just out of reach of a chimp.

Imagine a world where people minded there own business? It would be a lot better place....

It's an economic system under which the state redistributes the gay sex.

Yes. One [minor] facet of it, is a group of people attempting to exert control over your sexuality.

I'm not a socialist: I'm a ticked off and disillusioned capitalist.
But I'm also opposed to organized religion, especially when anyone starts to say what people who don't belong to their fairy tale support group are and are not allowed to do.
"Morality" and "Marriage" have nothing to do with each other.
Marriage is a social contract with the state that two people will combine their economic and fiscal responsibilities. That's it.
Sorry, I'm not a romantic. Or much of an idealist. Or maybe I'm too much of an idealist.
