Jar-Jar was nice as comic relief in TPM. In AotC it was fine of Lucas to show us he made it to representative of Naboo. But RotS is no place for him. Playtime is over, bring on the big guns, I guess....

Jar Jar did annoy the HELL out of me in TPM but was redeemed in AOTC but having limited screen time and playing a role in creating the future Empire. Some people have mentioned it would have been great to see him get axed by Anakin in ROTS to show just how evil he's become but I think that is too strong for kids. Jar Jar was for kids.....he is the character kids like most so it would probably be too horrific for children to see him murdered like that. Even being a somewhat Jar Jar hater myself....he is too much of an innocenet happy fellow to see murdered like that.

i'm glad he's gone because he doesn't appear in the original trilogy and killing him off would take away form padme's death, so its important for him to dissapear

Jar Jar was cool enough for my tastes. Although the juggling scene and the promotion to General was too over the top in my opineon.

But really, Jar Jar had his time in the series. He was introduced, had some conflict and was concluded somewhat. His wasn't a central role in the story, but it was a role that isn't left as a loose end. We then see him again in AOTC where he takes the role of substitute Senator (another huge stretch, but that's a different debate) and he does his part.

The problem with overly developing Jar Jar is that at some point his removal from the story would have to be on equal footing to his importance to the story. If he were to play a central role, then he most surely would need to suffer some kind of dramatic death. He's a jokey character and so going out that way isn't really in tune with what Jar Jar represents: a few laughs and the beguiled masses under the manipulation of the primary antagonist.

JAR JAR IS A SECONADRY CHARACTER.. AND A BAD ONE

He served his purpose... if it werent for him, qui gonn and obi wan would not have met Boss Nass, no army to fight in the end of PM

he served his purpose in AOTC by filling in for Padme and being stupid enough to bring to the senate a vote to given the chancellor emergency powers...

"Jar Jar is my favorite PT character. He symbolizes what the PT is really about, and I think he should have a large role in ROTS"

So what is the PT really about then?

While I know Lucas denies it to the uttermost, I'm personally convinced that Lucas severely reduced JarJar's role in AOTC and now ROTS because of the public backlash. I'm not saying he wouldn't have reduced his role to some degree anyway, but nevertheless, I don't buy any public reasoning from Lucas that he only reduced him because the story called for it. We all know from the bonus material on the OT DVD that he made many major changes before a finished product. It seemed almost anything was fluid. With the outcry of so many at the time of TPM, I think Lucas heeded it to some degree. Just imagine (only hypotheical scenario) if everyone had suddenly said that they thought suited Vader was a racist commentary on black people. No matter how ludacrous that sounds, if that had been the public's consensus for whatever reason, I can assure you, the next movie would have it's story altered to make changes to Vader in some way.

Anyone saying that Lucas is truly just making his movies the way he wants them (in a 100% way) it blind. He can pretty much do that now that he's on the last movie. But like anyone, he owns a company that needs to make money and he definitely wants to make a lasting impression in the entertainment world. He can't do that if people think his films stink because of characters like JarJar.

Personally, I thought JarJar was ok, I only thought he was a slight bit too silly. There was no such character in the OT, and I think GL was really taken with the idea of being the first to have a high exposure, all CG character in a full length major film.

Haha that was actually a fan made piece by an artist at the Star Wars Celebration 3 at Indianapolis, they even hauled (transported) it with the 501st stormtroopers mimicing when they escorted Han Solo in carbonite to Boba Fetts ship.

    Fear not, Binks buddies!

Rumor has it that SS is writing a few scripts for Jar Jar to star in some episodes of the new SW TV series!

If all goes well, Binks will host the 2006 Holiday Special, and possibly a new cable comedy show!

Remember, You'sa heard it here first! [face_shhh] ;)

maybe if he wasnt freakin showcased, literally showcased in the first film but originally given a chewie type role and a little more subdued, there wouldnt have been all this backlash and he could have travelled onto the next 2 movies as a character.

i must say though, that i took my mom to see TPM and she liked jar jar just fine and thats good enough for me to not care whether he's in it or not.

That's a good way to put it, LUH:

"maybe if he wasnt freakin showcased, literally showcased in the first film"

Showcased, that's probably the best word. Again, I think it stems from Lucas wanting to be one of the first with a major CG character.

Well think about it, Jar-Jar was, well pathetic in episode 1, then in episode 2 he is much more mature and gets involved with politics, and in episode 3 expect him to be next to boss nass as they watch the coffin of padme go by them. It does show a signifigant progression from Silly, to mature.

    Brandeni,

He was supposed to trip onto the Supreme Chancellor. He's still an idiot.

And for the record, it would have done the entire galaxy a favor by not getting involved in politics.

I honestly think Jar-Jar actually had a good useful purpose in TPM, but after that he has no story obligations. He should have never shown up in either AOTC or ROTS.

    BTW, I don't hate Jar-Jar.

    Ok maybe a little.

I don't think he wussed out. He just came to the conclusion that there wasn't much need for Jar Jar, other than a continuation of his past connection to Padme from the last two films. So he just removed those moments. The one with Palaptine I can understand, since it interrupted the narrative flow of Anakin's conversation with Palpatine. Before reading the script, I didn't know that Jar Jar was there. The novelization didn't mention him. I feel that Jar Jar's absence is fitting there. But it would've been nice to have one scene with him talking, in passing.

How is recognizing a mistake and correcting it wussing out?

It's not like Jar Jar was EVER a central character, so nipping and tucking him really has nothing to do with compromising his global vision. GL gives the fans what they want and they call him a wuss? Gimme a break.

You want parents to get mad, show Jar Jar getting carved up with a lightsaber.

    I agree with Invictus_Sol ()

The character of JarJar Binks was an idiot from day one, and if Lucas should ever decide to go back and do any more changes he should change JarJar in TPM into a "less annoying" character.

I mean what the hell, he was CGI anyway so why not do some changes to him instead of messing around with the OT.

"just thinking about that really bothers me...how absurd was it that qui-gon goes off into the rough space port, leaves obi-wan and takes jar jar and some hand maiden?? "

As opposed to taking Obi-Wan and leaving just a pilot,a clumsy gungan, handmaidens, and captain panaka to protect "The Queen"?

Better to leave a jedi (padawan) there to make sure the "Queen" is safe, and Jar-Jar was of course going to go with Qui-Gon he owed him his life.

I was one who definitely hated Jar jar back in '99. He's grown on me a bit. I can watch TPM without cringing at his antics but I'm glad he's relegated to the background of ROTS. I'm glad the scene of him tripping into Palps is cut. Was that really true? Was that scene filmed and completed or just an idea that was scrapped?
