From http://mattfischer.com/ramen/ which says it is the Official Ramen Homepage:

Ramen (rah-men): A noodle phenomenon. Ramen has become the accepted standard college snack/meal food of choice. Whether you are tired of cafeteria food, or you need a quick snack, Ramen is the perfect food. It is cheap, easy to make, and it tastes good.

A good example of a basic ramen is Mr Noodles. I could explain it better but I have a mid-term to study for and I expect someone else will post about this soon enough. (Cris~, Tragic?)

Mr. Noodles is to real ramen what day old McDonald's is to a nicely bbq'd burger.

The World Ramen site offers some wonderful images of ramen from legendary ramen shops across Japan and throughout the world. Believe me when I say you've never had a meal as yummy as a nicely prepared bowl of Ramen.

I try to compromise by eating lots of McDonalds

Most definitely you can get vegetarian Ramen. If you simply don't eat red-meat, go for the chicken ramen. Else there's seafood ramen. Or strictly veggie ramen (with delicious seaweed, carrots, sprouts and ginger shoots... mmmmm yummy).

The more strict a vegetarian you are, the more I suggest you seek out a restaurant catering to Buddhists - as there is less a chance that the stock has been prepared with meat. Or you can make it at home - veggie soup stock, noodles procured from a specialty market, bean sprouts, cubes of fried tofu, scallions, and dozens of other tasty veggies cut and prepared in interesting ways (look to the ramen gallery in the link I gave above for some interesting ideas of presentation).

Ramen is just the thing for a cold winters day.
