"Joulupukki"---Looking for a recipe

Hey there,
in two weeks we got a X-Mas meeting with YFU (Youth For Understanding), the exchange organisation I was in the US with, and we are supposed to prepare something for a buffet.

I read this one childrens book over and over when I was young. It is a book written by a Fin (Mauri Kunnas) called "Joulupukki", in german "Wo der Weihnachtsmann wohnt".
In this book they prapare a rice meal in which they hide an almond. Whoever finds this almond will have luck next year.

I really liked the idea of preparing something scandinavian, but my problem is I don´t know how to prepare it.

Does anybody of you have the recipe?

Well, if you mean the warm white porrige (Risgrynsgröt in Swedish), I just had some today! It's great and really christmasy. I'll see if I can dig up a recipe in English. I'm not too sure of the translations of some of the ingredients. It's really easy to make though.

On a sidenote, I have a friend who calls himself Din mandel i cyber-gröten, which translates to "Your almond in the cyber-porridge". Cute, isn't it?

That's weird. If you get the almond in Norway, you get a little marsipan pig. And I don't even like marsipan.

Really? Well I'm quite young yet, so I would prefer.. well.. anything but marriage. If it had been a giant chocolate pig, or a chocolate cupcake (oh sweet muffin, blessed are thou), then I am so there, the choco-holic I am.

 

I think the almond tradition is a bit different depending on where you're from. I'm from northern Sweden and I've never heard of the marriage deal. We just get good luck.

I could give you the recipe right away if only I knew what 'risgryn' is in English...

 

Well... it's rice, but not the normal rice you'd eat with ordinary food. It's.. uum... round rice. Make any sense?

 

ok, here we go then:

Risgrynsgröt, 4 servings

1½ dl round rice
3 dl water
1/2 tsp salt
7 dl milk
2 pieces of whole cinnamon
An almond

Boil the rice and salt in the water until all the water has sunk in (approx. 10 mins)

Add the milk and the cinnamon. Boil, low heat, for 30 minutes.

Add the almond and stir.
Serve with cold milk and plenty of sugar and cinnamon.
