Credit where credit is due: most of these characters were created by either Michael Stackpole or Aaron Allston, and to those two go all the laurels for this little story. They play extensively in George Lucas?s creation of a Galaxy far far away, and they have his permission to do so. I don?t, but as I?m broke, I hope no one will sue me for the liberties I am about to take. These are characters from the X-Wing novels, for the most part, and the dialogue in italics in this post is directly quoted from Book 7, Solo Command, by Aaron Allston.

This story is a plausible expansion on one of the situations left hanging at end of that novel. In my humble opinion, this is the best of the Star Wars novels. I?ve read a lot of them, maybe half of the published novels so far, and this is by far the best of them: deep and real, and funny and so poignantly sad all at the same time. Allston keeps so many balls in the air, and yet each character speaks with his or her own distinctive voice. Characters are surprising and yet never surreal, and no one, I mean *no one* writes Wedge Antilles better. Sorry, I?m gushing, think I might be a fan? ;)

Anyway, if you haven?t read that novel, and don?t want to be spoiled, don?t read any further. So without further ado, a possible answer to the question: what happened after that? for a troubled pair of ex-Wraiths. I hope you like it.

    ?...I?ll accept whatever you decide.?

The redhead gave the unseen holocam a last, long glance, her jade green eyes seeming to search out the viewer?s own, and then that almost-familiar face faded into the blankness of the recording?s ending.

Lieutenant Myn Donos of Starfighter Command?s justly famous Rogue Squadron bit his lip, his brow creased with concentration. With an almost reflex gesture, he cued the message to begin playback again. He had lost count of how many times he done this now, in the two weeks since he had first gotten it.

The screen brightened, and there shone the face of the woman he... well, that was the whole issue, wasn?t it? What did he feel for her? Who was she, really?

?Hello, Myn. It?s been a while since we?ve seen one another.? It had been six weeks. His life had changed beyond recognition. And hers?

Her name was Kirney Slane, in this new incarnation, but she?d been Lara Notsil when he?d known her, and before that...

Gara Petothel: an exemplary agent in Isard?s Imperial Intelligence Branch, specialising in deep cover espionage. She?d been born into a loyal Imperial family with Intelligence practically bred into her. What was it Corran had called her: a ?situational adaptive?? Was she sane, or was she reaching towards a state of normalcy, even as he was?

?I?m back on Corellia now, after a few years of knocking around the Galaxy...? She sounded so... good, even with the odd Corellian accent, to his ears parched for her voice, and she looked so good to him, too, despite the change in hair tint.

But Gara Petothel had been the agent to deliver up his first command, the ill-fated Talon Squadron, to obliteration at the hands of the Empire, on a nameless, useless moon. He?d come away from that shattered, but still standing, if you could call it that. He had tried to bury his misplaced guilt and to deny himself any emotional expression at all, because if *one* thing were to slip...

The whole tower of cards had come tumbling down when his astromech, sole survivor of the Talon massacre other than himself, was destroyed in a later engagement. Suddenly alone and made brutally aware that his pilots had gone unavenged, Myn had retreated from his new unit, and had only been drawn out by the concerted efforts of his squadmates.

Flying with the Wraiths, he?d been as close to normal as he?d come after the disaster with the Talons, and it was Lara who had helped him see, just by her presence in his life, that he wasn?t as alone in the Galaxy as he?d thought. And neither was she.

?I know, after the way we parted company, you may not want to see me again.?

It had taken some convincing, and he was never

Oh, wow! I think the process of me becoming an X-wing fan has just speeded up considerably. Keep up your excellent writing, and in the meantime, I'm going to see about this book by Aaron Allston.

 That was.... that was.... so good. My gosh. I... I don't even have words to describe that. It was excellent, and you kept Myn right in character.

So, my question to you: Will this continue, or was it a one hit story? I'm hoping for the former. :)

To answer your questions, I present you with... another post!

    :)

A quick note: up until now, I had really hesitated to write too much of other people's characters, particularly those of professional authors whose work I enjoy. This fic has really freed me in some ways, and I am greatly enjoying writing Wedge Antilles, say, for the first time. (Let's not talk about Corran Horn... ;) )

So, yes, this story won't be over any time soon, and I hope you guys continue to read and enjoy. :) Thanks are due to my best friend Rani, who beta'ed as this was being typed out: best damned beta reader in the biz! :) Scratches a mean back, too!

    *Derisa*

Wedge Antilles ran a hand through his short black hair, and frowned at his datascreen. For every task he completed, it seemed, three more took its place. Even in the few slack times, such as now, the paperwork he'd put off during the frenzy of missions they'd flown as part of General Han Solo's strike force against the warlord Zsinj had caught up to him, and he felt swamped.

From famine to feast, he thought wryly, If you can call it that. The Rogue Squadron logo topped the next bit of correspondence awaiting him, but he was quite surprised to note the source.

After a quick comm call, Wedge drew himself to his feet and had a good stretch. I need to get out again anyway, he sighed, Four hours of paperwork is enough: any more of this right now and I'll forget how to fly anything but a desk! A short walk later, he joined the other pilots in his squad's command chain in the small officer's lounge set aside for their use for those few times when they were actually stationed on Coruscant.

"I just got a very interesting request for leave," Wedge informed Tycho and Corran. "Either of you aware of anything that might be up with Myn Donos?"

Tycho shook his head, his expression serious but calm. ""He's been flying well, Wedge, no issues have come up at all." For someone who had undergone some terrible things without his faith or sanity faltering, Tycho Celchu was surprisingly understanding of the subject pilot's known instabilities, and he kept a quiet watch on the man. That would surprise many who knew Tycho only as Wedge's ace wingman, arguably the second-best active fighter pilot in the New Republic, but Wedge knew him better. Tycho, accomplished warrior that he was, also happened to be a very compassionate man. For all that he had been the one to force Myn to not deviate from his course, locking onto him before ordering him to stand down, he had nothing but sympathy for a person who had undergone all that Myn Donos had.

The second man in the room was not so generous. Corran Horn was a somewhat less forgiving judge of character, although his recent awareness of his Jedi heritage had made him see many things in a different light. He too had been present during the debacle surrounding Myn's loss of control the day Lara Notsil had been revealed, and he had watched the young Lieutenant like a razorhawk since then. "He's unpredictable, Sir," Corran contradicted Tycho, "I'm not sure why you wanted him here in the Rogues, after what almost happened."

Wedge raised an eyebrow. He had long since grown accustomed to these occasional and subtle challenges of his authority. Corran Horn was an exceptional pilot, and might one day prove an excellent squadron leader.

    But not today.

"He's a good pilot, Corran, better than some we've taken on." Wedge interjected. "What I need to know from you is whether you think it's too early for him to take a leave."

"How much time does he want?" Corran asked, and Wedge noted that his 3IC seemed to be probing after a weakness in Donos he might be sensing, but could not see.

"Three weeks. Considering his logged cockpit hours, and mission profiles to date, I'd say that's reasonable." Wedge regarded him coolly, leaning back in his chair. "Why?"

Corran's lips thinned. "He had almost that much time out of the cockpit aboard the Mon Remonda."

Wedge drew himself up slowly, his eyes

Whooooo boy! Somethin' tells me this here's goin' to be a fun story!

I sure can see Rani's hand in the mix here: I hope she helps you with the next part of this story, too... ever since she told me about her dream argument with Mike Stackpole about how to properly write Wes Janson, I have been waitin' for her to get on with it and write that pilot!

Lookin' forward to more, darlin'(s)! ;)

Excellent writing, as usual! I liked the way that Wedge knew that Corran could be a good leader--but not to-day. I also liked the way each character responded to mentions of other characters. So much can be revealed in reactions. Well done!
