Saga Resources and Materials?

    So I know in Star Wars, there's mention of mining of valuable resources, like Tibanna gas or spice or some very important metal etc. But why, in that state of technology, do they still mine? Why not just make it all in a huge industrial lab/plant artificially? That's what we did in the real world during the Industrial Revolution to make steel...

    Steel still needs iron, and coal. Both of which have to be mined, and can't be made artificially (even future tech would struggle to artifically make more than tiny amounts at a time). This is Star Wars, not Star Trek- there are no replicators.

    Even if SW had some feasible alchemical means of synthesizing stuff, you'd still need some kind of starting material which would probably have to be extracted from some kind of planetoid.
