Wonderful post again. Obi-Wan's outburst is so very understandable and I can almost see the Council-members desire to join in, while they know that they can't allow their disapproval of the current Republic to show, because then hope would really be lost. Interesting how they seem to plot against Palpatine. But if they do, I wonder why Obi-Wan still seems to think they're fighting for the Republic while he surely must realise that it's only a facade which they can't let down if they want to reach something trough the senators willing to fight against the chancellor. Or maybe he just can't take it anymore and it's only emotion that is showing through here, even as he knows the reasons in his head. We will see.

I love the reference to Yoda's remark from AOTC as well as Obi-Wan's description of the Ceremony of Invasion. Makes it all seem very realistic. Very well handled again. :)

I?m just wondering? if we didn?t all know Anakin?s trajectory, would his behavior seem as ominous? Or would he merely seem like a self-important, overconfident brat?

Heh, tough question. But the fact that he is the Chosen One and has so much power, throws an omen over his whole story, IMO. He's like a kid with a bazooka. Sure, it wouldn't seem as ominous, but he's not exactly a brat either because we can get into his head and his character..his p.o.v. You handle his fall very gradually. There's so much room for development in a fic. Can't say the same with the films, though.

The last post: This post makes an important point...Jedi aren't made for war, and Palpy knows exactly what he's doing. War is a terrible thing, with meaningless death and casualty all around. You'd think the Jedi, as compassionate as they are, would be the least suited for the job. Anyway, I like the scheming by Bail and the Jedi. Now, here's something they're actually doing right. I must ask, will we see as much politics/politicians in this story as in Singular Touch of Grace? I loved that aspect of the fic; it reminded me of a great book I read based on the Roman Empire (it was titled The Light Bearer ).

?Calm yourself, Obi-Wan,? Adi Gallia had ordered sternly. ?Your outburst is not helpful.?
Rubbed off on Obi-Wan, ten years with Anakin has. ;)

Very interesting chapter. I particularly enjoyed the way you explored the effect of the war on the Jedi, as an Order and as individuals. Even on the Council it seems that the stresses of the conflict are having an effect. [face_worried] It is easy to see why this attempt to reconcile Jedi duty and the brutality of war is doomed to failure.

Good to see the proto-Rebellion in full swing. At least I don?t have to worry about Bail meeting an untimely demise in this story. :D

Thanks, everyone, for your interesting and thoughtful comments!

stacysatrip Interesting post. It's nice to see Obi-Wan let go a bit.

When you think about what he has just been through ? it hasn?t been that long since the events at the end of WOC after all, and Obi has been going non-stop since ? it seemed to me that even an experienced Jedi might lose it once in a while... :p

However, it's interesting (unless I am misreading) that the Jedi continue to vow allegiance to the Republic while trying to stoke the embers of a revolt against Palpatine. Maybe to them, that's the most loyal thing they could do....

I think you?re right ? the Jedi began by upholding the Republic and the ideals for which it stood, but the more corrupt they see it become, the more it has placed them in the position of having to decide where their loyalties should lie, based on their deepest values. They are truly caught between that proverbial ?rock and hard place? at the moment.

VaderLVR64 Wonderful! What more can I say. The fascinating transformation of a gifted young Jedi into an evil Sith is being handled flawlessly. I love your interpretation of Obi-Wan, a very accurate one I believe!

Thank you! And I?m glad that you agree that even Kenobi can lose it now and then, given enough stress. But we can be sure that he will never let it go too far?

Go, Obi! Sorry, just had to do that!

    HeeHee! I?m with you there.

Jazz_Skywalker I like how your Obi-Wan wears his emotions on his sleeve more than in Episodes One and Two. It makes him seem more human.

I think he always has been. It?s just that the circumstances are becoming so extreme that even his famous equanimity shows cracks now and then.

    Awesome chapter!

    Thank you!

GunraysLawyer This is just so interesting as it covers something that I am dealing with from a different perspective in an on-going series of works (TAF, SL&B, et al.). That is the fact that the Jedi are totally unprepared psychologically for warfare? the Jedi are really not Philosophically flexible enough to have 'true-believing' members of the Order survive unbroken by what they are being asked to do. Kenobi's outburst could be viewed as either the first stages of a breakdown or as venting to prevent one.

Oh, I agree with you completely. I think it was made quite clear in AOTC, and, given their spiritual/philosophical stance as revealed here and there in the Saga films, I certainly think that the Jedi are ill-suited for an activity that is based on two values that they eschew: glory and cruelty (as you put it so succinctly.) As for Obi-Wan, I don?t see his breakdown as being complete ? I see it as temporary, the cumulative result of having to act in ways that are complete anathema to him.

nya bi Wan totally rocks in this part! He is absolutely right. The Jedi are fighting for a cause that is becoming shadier and shadier. The Republic appears more like an imperial occupation force than one that is trying to restore peace and justice. That's something that the canon Padmé begins to realize as well. His rant is completely understandable. If only the Jedi would wake up.

I think the Jedi are waking up. I think that is part of their suffering at this point. In the universe of these stories, I have it that they already suspect quite strongly that things are not what they seem and that the cause for which they fight has betrayed them. The tragedy, of course, is that there is precious little they can do about it.

    LadyZGreat post! Great characterization!

    Thank you!

I'm sorry, I can't help disliking the "oh, so great" Jedi Council... even if they can project some real sympathy from time to time. Just sitting there... giving so called wise decisions... always very clever "afterwards"...

Oh, I think they are not so full of themselves right now. They are struggling with insurmountable problems.

Ok, I'll try not to turn to the Dark Side...

    Oh

I saw on A Larger World that you had a sequel up to Winds of Change. I'm sorry I didn't get over here sooner. :( Like Lothi, I only come over here these days for your stories, and Breezy's. I'm caught up on this one now and your writing is wonderful, as usual. :)

    Intro and Chapter 1

Hmmm?interesting symbolism regarding the firestones. I like it.

So Anakin used less than orthodox methods to rescue Bail from assassins. Why am I not surprised? :p And at this point he?s still shaking from what happened to Padmé at the end of ?Winds of Change?. It almost seems like Anakin knows, somewhere inside, that he?s made a deal with the devil?and it frightens him.

I thought it was interesting about the pirates disguising themselves as Republic ships and plundering Separatist ships. Sounds like something Palpatine would set up. [face_thinking]

    Chapter 2:

You can feel, between Padmé?s thoughts and Bail?s conversation with Anakin, that the Republic is crumbling fast?and you can feel the grief of those who are powerless to stop it. :_| And poor Padmé?unable to talk to her husband, and surrounded by people who don?t trust him, so she can?t even talk to anyone about him.

I love how loyal her handmaidens are to her?she?s lucky to have such a group of friends.

?Who would have imagined that Jedi Padawans could cause so much trouble?? LOL at Sabé. [face_laugh]

So they?re thinking of hiring Dellia again?hmmm? [face_thinking]

    Chapter 3:

I like Obi-Wan?s description of the Star Destroyer dying slowly, and how it connects with what?s happening with the Republic. Very poignant and very sad.

And Mace assigning Obi-Wan a partner?I?m interested in seeing how this plays out and what kind of assignment they get.

I kind of feel sorry for that Captain, feeling usurped by Anakin and forced to follow practices he considers unorthodox as well. Very typical of Anakin not to want to wait around and see what happens though, or follow the rules when he believes a loved one might be in danger.

Then the session with Obi-Wan and the Council members?

?Not in the nature of a Jedi it is, to be a soldier. Your compassion does you credit.?

How very true, and how sad. And you know the Republic is dead, the ?dark times? have come, when Obi-Wan is calling it ?corrupt and merciless?. :(

Great job my friend--I look forward to more. :)

    Oh, definitely.

I thought it was interesting about the pirates disguising themselves as Republic ships and plundering Separatist ships. Sounds like something Palpatine would set up.

I think of it as a typical outgrowth of the civil and moral chaos that war brings?like looting.

You can feel, between Padmé?s thoughts and Bail?s conversation with Anakin, that the Republic is crumbling fast?and you can feel the grief of those who are powerless to stop it.

I imagine that the Jedi feel that grief, too.

And poor Padmé?unable to talk to her husband, and surrounded by people who don?t trust him, so she can?t even talk to anyone about him. I love how loyal her handmaidens are to her?she?s lucky to have such a group of friends.

I have to say that I mostly feel sorry for Padmé at the moment. Every minute of every day has to be difficult for her.

So they?re thinking of hiring Dellia again?hmmm?

Yep! More on this to come.

I like Obi-Wan?s description of the Star Destroyer dying slowly, and how it connects with what?s happening with the Republic. Very poignant and very sad.

    Thanks!

And Mace assigning Obi-Wan a partner?I?m interested in seeing how this plays out and what kind of assignment they get.

    :D

? you know the Republic is dead, the ?dark times? have come, when Obi-Wan is calling it ?corrupt and merciless?

So true. The dark times are indeed upon us.

Author's note:We are now getting into portions of the story that may seem more than a little familiar to those of you who followed "A Singular Touch of Grace." For that I have to apologize again, and all I can suggest is that if it gets too boring, just wander off and talk amongst yourselves until the newer material re-emerges...

Oh, wait. There is some newer material woven into it... :D

The following post is a complete chapter, so it's the only story post for this week.

Chapter 4. Secrets and Surprises I

Since the Naboo system?s Senate Delegation had left Coruscant more than a month before, the Senator?s offices had been operating on an automated system with only a skeleton staff. But the Galaxy?s political life, and the war, had not gone on hiatus, and so it was high time to re-establish and to strengthen the Naboo System?s political and diplomatic presence at the nerve center of Galactic politics.

In order to speed the Delegation?s return to Coruscant, young Queen Renalia had placed her Royal Yacht at her disposal for the journey. After all, without active, visible representation in the Senate, there was no one to safeguard the Naboo system?s interests. Queen Renalia was grateful that the experienced Amidala still was willing to resume her duties despite everything that had happened. Once the final decision about her reinstatement had been made, Amidala had seemed in a tearing hurry to return to Coruscant.

The Queen?s Yacht was an elegant vessel designed for high-level meetings and socializing, and could comfortably accommodate the Senator, her personal staff, a security team, and other members of the official Naboo delegation and their staffs. Since the vessel itself was unarmed, it was accompanied on the journey by a heavily armed fighter wing of Naboo?s Royal Security Service.

The only odd addition to the Yacht's escort was a small, snub-nosed, slightly battered vessel called a blastboat. Despite its small size it was heavily armed and hyperdrive capable. The Senator herself owned it, and she had not disclosed her reasons for bringing the vessel back to Coruscant to anyone, even her closest staff. Captain Typho had been asked to handpick a pilot to convey blastboat, the Defiance, on this journey.

From the moment she had embarked on the Yacht, Padmé had remained in her stateroom doing only two things: catching up on more than four long weeks? worth of Senate business, and keeping an eye on the comm. messages in case Anakin got in touch. So far, he hadn?t contacted her since she had transmitted the Delegation?s flight plan in yet another one of their all-to-brief and unsatisfying conversations via holo-transmission. Padmé had stayed up late into the first night onboard working, and gone back to it again early on the second day. Most of her work involved reading reports and mulling over the legislation that had been proposed or passed in her absence. That left her staff largely idle and at loose ends.

Halfway through the three-day journey, Sabé had had enough. ?I?m so bored!? she?d complained to Dormé, who seemed reasonably content and always found something useful to do.

?What would you like to do, if you had the chance?? Dormé had asked, probably just to humor her.

    ?Punch something,?

?You need exercise,? Dormé had sighed. ?You always get like this when you can?t move around.?

Two hours later, after an exhaustive and slightly frenetic search through all of all the Yacht?s storage facilities, Sabé had pounced upon something she regarded as genuine treasure ? six long staves with thickly padded ends.

?Tak?an!? she?d crowed triumphantly. ?I haven?t sparred with these in ages!?

?Neither has anyone else,? Dormé had observed dubiously over her shoulder, frowning at Sabé?s discovery. ?Those things are purely ceremonial. They must be left over from some traditional ceremony or other.?

Sabé was not to be deterred. An hour after that she had seen to it that the large conference room was completely cleared of furniture, and most of the

Dellia and Padme can pool their resoruces and start a creche' for Force sensitive 'orphans' and then of course take care of the babies themselves.

OK...I was joking...but now that I think about it...that could almost work.

Good opening scene. Poor Padme. It's bad enough having to catch up on four weeks' worth of work in a short period of time (*raises hand*) without having the pressures of the galaxy on her as well. :(

I love the way you've written Sabe. Wanting to punch something because she's bored--that's always how I imagined her to be. :p I like the sparring sessions too--very well done.

I had almost forgotten about Dellia being pregnant (and by Lon of all people :p ) --I wonder how well that's going to go over with Padme when they talk in private... [face_thinking]

Good scene with Anakin--I can feel his indecisiveness, his trouble making a decision at the last minute, especially knowing that he thinks his decisions will make the difference between life and death for Padme. It does look like he's uncovering a lot of Palpatine's actions--the question is, will he connect them to Palpatine? And if he does, will he feel trapped by his side anyway by virtue of his deal to get Padme off the treason charge?

?Relay the order throughout the battle group. Begin calculations for the jump to hyperspace.? He leaned closer to the other officer and lowered his voice slightly. ?But before we make the jump, transmit our course change to Coruscant, and make sure that message is flagged.?

I have a bad feeling about this... [face_worried]

Great posts as always, geo. I remember the sparring scene in a slightly different form from the other story.

I liked the way you showed the effect that the war is having on the Jedi. It's easy to think of them as being able to handle just about anything, and the movies don't always show their compassion and vulnerability. Heck, the movies make it easy to think about the Jedi as unfeeling, especially given the casual way they sometimes use violence - like Obi-Wan hacking off Zam's arm in a bar (a habit that he still didn't break after 20-plus years in the desert ;) ).

After letting the tour de force saga of ?Children of
Circumstance? and ?Winds of Change? settle into an
honored place in Star Wars mythology, geo3 is
continuing a tale she cannot ignore. A master writer
with a genius hold over the prequel trilogy, she is dripping
out installments of ?Ring of Fire? and we cannot help
    but consume them like addicts.

?Ring of Fire? is yet another example of this
particular author bending our language to her will to
produce a story more intricate than a microscopic
maze, more genuine than first blush, and more
inspirational than the battle hymns of old. Her
characterizations are perfect, her insight is envied,
and her care is much appreciated.

It is that care of her characters that draws me in,
gives me HOPE and inspiration. It is that care of the
Force, as she presents with the surety of Bushido and
the insight of Tao, to which I aspire. She?s in the
mind of Palpatine, in the heart of Padme and in the
    soul of Anakin.

I hope she completes this story in time, for it is MY
prequel canon and I wish to see if George can live up
    to it.

Yeah. I guess in this way, Lon still lives? [face_devil]

Good scene with Anakin--I can feel his indecisiveness, his trouble making a decision at the last minute, especially knowing that he thinks his decisions will make the difference between life and death for Padmé. It does look like he's uncovering a lot of Palpatine's actions--the question is, will he connect them to Palpatine? And if he does, will he feel trapped by his side anyway by virtue of his deal to get Padmé off the treason charge?

I think it may be time to revive an old and probably unloved tradition: ...umm, I couldn?t possibly say? [face_laugh]
