One of the great British eccentrics has passed on.

A presenter of The Sky At Night for over 50 years, a very informative show that no doubt fueled an interest in space for many. He was not a science graduate, essentially an amateur astronomer himself.

A self-taught xylophone & piano player who faked his age in order to sign up for World War 2 where he served asan RAF navigator.
An opponent of Fox Hunting and critic of the EU.

Not as revered as great scientists like Einstein or Hawking, and not as known globally, but rather like Dr Brian Cox does now he was very good and helping the oridinary person understand science.

I have a couple of his books myself.
He certainly taught me a lot about the Universe, I hope he inspired others here too

I knew of him but never seemed to catch his show. I've seen clips of it though. He will be missed. (And I like the cat and 'paw' constellation..)

Oh no. I'm speechless. I remember seeing him doing a live show a long time ago and it was great. He tended to talk a bit too fast but it was really good.

I'll leave you all with this: Patrick Moore plays the xylophone

More people should wear monocles, and play Xylophones.

He was once asked about the difference between Astronomy & Astrology, to which he replied - "The only thing astrology proves is that there's one born every minute".

If it wasn't for him, I would never have got a telescope.

RIP Patrick. Gone but not forgotten
