I recently got the complete saga Blu ray box set for Christmas and while i was watching ROTJ i thought about the gust of wind that came up from the hole after Vader threw in the emperor. I have never known the cause for the wind, and its really bothering me because it is an added effect so it must be there for some reason.

Does anyone have any ideas or answers?

In the EU it's consistantly referred to as "a burst of dark side energy"- that said, not all Dark Siders produce it on death- and at least one light sider (Shaak Ti) also has had it.

Of course, thanks to TCW, Maul's not dead. So that just leaves Dooku.

It's just an added magical effect, it doesn't happen to everyone and it doesn't really mean anything. It's there for the mythology of it, it's very common in fiction to have some sort of burst of energy after the evil wizard is defeated. It just looks cool.

It reminds me of the deaths in Highlander.

I just accepted it as Sidious trying to take Vader with him, as a kind of last attempt to kill him.

This. In the last Harry Potter film Voldemort kind of explodes in a burst of energy as well. It's just done to look exciting.

My interpretation, even as a kid, was that his dark soul was leaving his body.

I figured it was because his body hit a reactor.

That's what I always thought too. That it was him hitting a reactor or something

Ever since I saw Jedi back in '83, I always thought that is was a wind like you used to get in those old horror films that suddenly appears and blows away the remains of the defeated vampire then subsides just as quick combined with the dark side evil that flowed through the Emperor escaping in all directions.

I also figured it was the darkside energy leaving. Why didn't we see that with Dooku or Maul? They weren't as strong in the darkside as Palpatine. It's like filling a balloon a little bit versus filling it until the edges nearly tear. When you puncture the former, it just lets the air out quietly. With the latter, you get a huge BOOM!

That doesn't mean Dooku or Maul were weak. They were strong in the Force. But Palpy's power bordered on making him Darkside Incarnate. When he died, rather violently from such a fall, that energy had to go somewhere.

Yoda tells us the force is everywhere, so why would Palpatine need to store it up in his body like a battery?

    Here's my take:

in-universe: Palpatine hit a reactor, sending a gust of wind up
out-of-universe: the Dark Lord died, leaving a gust of wind behind

It's just an effect, maybe his Sith Lighting reacting with the reactor?

Not enough time for him to hit the reactor- at most he would have hit the bottom of the tower.
