Even "dark force users" would make the prophecy unfulfilled. It wasn't the Sith per say but the "Dark Side" in general that needed to be defeated in order for 'balance' to be restored. In reality I would think balance means:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yin_and_yang

In Daoist philosophy, dark and light () yin and yang, arrives in the dàodéjīng (道德經) at Chapter 42.[3] It becomes sensible from an initial quiescence or emptiness (wuji, sometimes symbolized by an empty circle), and continues moving until quiescence is reached again. For instance, dropping a stone in a calm pool of water will simultaneously raise waves and lower troughs between them, and this alternation of high and low points in the water will radiate outward until the movement dissipates and the pool is calm once more. Yin and yang thus are always opposite and equal qualities. Further, whenever one quality reaches its peak, it will naturally begin to transform into the opposite quality: for example, grain that reaches its full height in summer (fully yang) will produce seeds and die back in winter (fully yin) in an endless cycle.

That's one interpretation of the Prophecy, but not the only one. What does the Prophecy actually say? All it says is that the Chosen One will destroy the Sith.

too many replies so I hope I'm not rehashing old arguements. Someone stated that Palpatine/Vader were the last of the Sith and Luke the last of the Jedi an when one of them won, the other was vanquished. But that's not quite true is it?
Leia is Force sensitive and could become a Jedi. Forget the EU but Yoda even says she has the potential. Go back to EP III and Yoda resets the "distress message" telling all surviving Jedi to go into hiding. And just because the Purge happened, does not mean Vader got all of them. So the possiblity of other Jedi exists, the plot device has been established. Conversely, there is no reason there could not be some other Sith in the shadows.
Those who say, "no they're gone forever" are just too wussy to let go of their own preconceived notions.

No, all it says is that the Chosen One will bring balance back to the Force. Destruction of the Sith is not mentioned

STAR WARS will not be STAR WARS without ligth vs dark. The force users are the gods od the star wars universe. And movies without either side would be boring and make no sense what so ever.
Imagine a SW movie without the climax of the great duals zzzzz sry but bounty hunters etc is obly cool up until a certain point. In all the 6 movies the saber fights are always the highlights.

Also lore wise there willl always be sith and jedi even if one of them is wiped out, the force will seek out new force users to bring balance. btw i realize some of you are a little off one the whole choose one
choose one hadd nothing to do with killing of the sith but brining the force to balance after Sidious and Plagueis brought the force out of balance a few years before the battle of naboo.

Even a great enemy like Abeloth is not in the long run as interesting as sitl lords..Turn it around, a star wars movie with no jedi zzzzzzzzz. To be honest to the few of you you dont want the sith to retiurn-
it's like you dont like star wars at all and dont understand how the universe works.

Obi-Wan does say "You were supposed to destroy the Sith, not join them" however, it is possible that this was a Jedi interpretation of an older, vaguer prophesy.

This is what the official SW encyclopedia (2008) says:

    Chosen One
According to an ancient Jedi prophecy, this individual was destined to bring balance to the Force. The true wording of the prophecy was lost to time, but it described a period when the Force would be dominated by the dark side, and an individual would be conceived by the will of the Force, possibly coaxed into life by the interactions of midi-chlorians. This person would vanquish the dark side menace, returning the force to balance.

When Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn discovered a young slave boy with a record midi-chlorian count on Tatooine, he believed he had found the Chosen One in the form of Anakin Skywalker. True to the prophecy, the boy had no father - he had inexplicably sprung to life in the womb of his mother, Shmi Skywalker. Qui-Gon took Anakin to Coruscant for Jedi training, adamantly insisting before a skeptical Jedi Council that the boy would bring balance to the Force.

Qui-Gon proved correct, but in a manner that few could have predicted. The Force was in imbalance due to the rise of the Sith orchestrated by Darth Sidious. Anakin would eliminate the imbalance by joining the Sith, and in the process become the instrument of destruction for both Jedi and Sith.

Problem is, if the Force was only in imbalance due to the rise of the Sith, why would "destroying both the Jedi and the Sith" rebalance it?

Problem is- the Sith don't get "destroyed" till 20 years after most of the Jedi were.

If the Force "came back into balance" the moment Sidious exploded aboard the 2nd Death Star (because Skywalker Senior was no longer a Sith Lord, but a Jedi Knight again) then the destruction of the Jedi wasn't necessary to the "rebalancing of the Force"- it could just as easily have been rebalanced if Anakin had chosen to side with Mace, when Mace tried to kill Sidous.

So the Force stayed out of balance for 20 years.
True provided Mace didn't go to the dark side for killing unarmed Sidious.

Oh, how I long for the days before this vague, hokey prophecy confused things so badly.

But it's people who propigate those ideas. If somone has the right to say "THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN" then I have the right to call them a fool. At least I'll do it directly.

Yin and yang. Lucas took much from eastern philosophy.

Does the prophecy say how long balance is brought to the Force? Is there another prophecy that says, "Actually once the Force is balanced, it will fall out of balance again and the Chosen One will bring balance to the Force... AGAIN."? No one knows.

Personally, I hope the Sith return in the ST. Jedi v Sith is as everlasting as Light v Dark, Good v Evil.

A conflict that won't end until the end of humanity? Unrealistic and depressing.

The thing about prophecy is that it gives you just enough information to have some idea of what will (if it's true) take place at some point in the future. The specifics of all that takes place in-between prediction and the actual future event remain a mystery. Further, if the specifics were known ahead of time it would a) be boring for everyone watching and b) The prophecy wouldn't come true because the jedi would use the knowledge to avoid being wiped out and the sith would use the knowledge to come up with a different plan to destroy the jedi.

I have another question: If Sith DO return in the ST, how should they do so? Should one of Luke's students fall, should Palps have secret apprentices or secret masters?

Perhaps a being with knowledge of the Dark Side was hidden away centuries ago by the Sith of that time as a backup plan. This being happens to be of Yoda's species and very powerful. Because of his/her species he has lived since the time of Darth Bane. (Yoda was 900, possible). A disgruntled Jedi stumbles upon Palpatine's holocron (cue Ian McD cameo) and learns of this Sith backup plan.

I think one of Luke's students should fall. That would make the story more personal.

To me it doesn't matter much how they return, I just hope the reveal will be spectacular.:D
