Eye opening for me too. I mean, who'd have thought offering exactly what Bush was offering, albeit with stupider policies (protectionism) and better hair would be enough to convince the Democrats to field him?

It opened my eyes to how desperate the Democrats are, when they shelved Howard Dean for the most bland ticket since, well, Gore/Libermann.

Let's face it - the oppositions in the pro-Iraq countries are hopeless.

Well, the Democrats have had a problem since Clinton left, in that he moved the party to the centre and sold it off his own strength. They've had a crisis of identity since before the Iraq war, as has the ALP which doesn't know if it's a champagne socialist, workers or centrist party.

I agree that all three opposition parties had problems well before Iraq. However, you cannot deny that various matters regarding Iraq and the war on terror have been used to the reigning party's advantage in all three countries.

Well, sure, but on the other hand it's not like the anti-war crowd's not purposefully ignoring the positives in Iraq for the doom-and-gloom aspects of the post-war reconstruction. By many accounts, if you know where to look, Iraqis are actually damned proud of what their country can become. So, it's not all bad, though obviously we're a little miffed that Wolfowitz and co would think us stupid enough to believe Saddam and Osama were working together after a decade of unrestrained hatred. o_O

Yeah, but if you want to get even less 'black & white' you could say that the 'anti-war crowd' is by no means solidified in any sense so therefore cannot be grouped into one mass group whom you can claim have been deliberately ignoring the positives. It is possible to acknowledge the positives while being anti-war.

Well, can we agree it's probably all Russia's fault, deep down?

Maybe, but we have to somewhat blame America for turning Saddam from an ally to an enemy. Didn't the CIA trained him.

    Turncoats

    I like Vegemite.

    I hate threads like this.
Get over yourselves please. Most people know your opinion already, and you know theirs. Enough. Please.

Can we get back to Vegemite or Star Wars?

Serious, where the hell did you wrench that unholy union between conjecture and outright falsehood from?

You may be thinking of the lie propagagted by the unquantifiably ignorant that "Usama bin Laden was trained by the CIA", which is so ******* stupid and ignorant of the entirely jihad against the Soviets 1979-1989 that it boggles me people go ahead with it. Yes, I'm looking at you Michael Moore, you raging, lying hypocrit you; and the crowds who swallowed it afterwards, without even bothering to think about what they were putting in their mouths.

In short, Katana, you're wrong. Spectacularly so; as in we should declare a holiday celebrating just how far off the mark one person could be. :)

Okay okay, but you have to admit that the line between fact, fiction and fabrication is so blurry today that it's hard what to know what is or isn't true.

No Katana, I wrote my thesis on the US and terrorism which meant arseloads of research into bin Laden, so I can tell you, no.

Bin Laden was in Afghanistan briefly to build things. He never recieved US funding or training; the CIA gave money to the Pakistani ISI who in turn gave it to the Afghan mujahideen. The Afghans, for what it's worth, detested the Arabs as adventurers.

In all fairness, I've been known to have the same reaction to people who insist on using poor grammar or opening redundant threads over on the JC side of things. Neither that nor a person's inability to fact-check are the point of this thread, however.

    Right.

What was the point? Was it making fun of Mother Russia and her wily ways?

First of all, there is no need to become personal.

Second of all, you attacked Katana for not checking facts before posting. I may not have written a thesis on American terrorism, but I do know that Saddam and Bin Laden are not the same person.

Thirdly, History is a series of opinions, and accounts of events, mostly written from whichever side is publishing the information.

Fourthly, for interest sake, check out this. http://www.lewrockwell.com/rockwell/history-repeating.html U.S. endorsement of Saddam's warmaking is discussed nine paragraphs in. Make what you will of it - just provinding the alternate argument. You might also like to treck through old newspapers and find out just who installed Saddam as leader in the first place. I think you would find these facts rather interesting (I'm assuming that trust your own papers to print the truth).

Finally, I have tried the old vegemite and cheese combination, but I still prefer to lather it on toast with lots of margarine.:)

Johnnage, this is a case where your spamming every imaginable thread in site is even more crass than usual. Truly, I'm glad you felt the need to chastise me whilst everyone else was doing it, as there can't be a thread you don't throw 2 words into, but to suggest it's less than appreciated is a mild understatement. :) Furthermore the last comment from me was 2 days ago, Jonny - too little too late.

    Katana, I apologise.

Luminara, I also said in all probability she was thinking of Osama, since one doesn't heard about "CIA training" for Saddam. Sure, I jumped to conclusions, and I apologise fully.

I will also send Katana a PM apologising for my mistake.

Did you know vegemite was made out of the horrid sludgy bits at the bottom of old barrels left over from the beer making process?

That is why I love it so.
