    I'm going use this thread to spotlight the unusual playthings companies actually made for kids, thinking they'd actually want to play with them.

    First up: The J.J. Armes action figure!

    [image=http://www.spymall.com/investigators/Armes_doll.jpg]

    Yes, your eyes are not deceiving you: that figure pictured above has realistic prosthetic hooks for hands. He was made in the 1970s by Ideal Toys, and based on a real private investigator of the same name, who lost his hands in a childhood accident, but still managed to overcome such adversity to become a private investigator. Ideal hoped he'd be as big a seller as their Evel Knievel toys, but well.....I think you can see why that didn't happen. I mean, would you have wanted to play with a toy of a guy with no hands when you were a kid?

    Also: Slade!

    The only toy to ever stink on purpose. I heard Stinkor figures reek of their foul odor still to this day, because Mattel added patchouli oil into the plastic they used to make him.

    The Pet Rock was a popular craze in the 70's. The guy who came up with the idea made millions of dollars on this.

    Speaking of rocks, the makers of Go-Bots made a spin-off toyline called Rock Lords, which featured robots that transformed into....rocks.

    These thingies. They look almost cute and a tad freaky... and I don't want to admit how many of them I have bought (the hippo is totally my favorite!).

    Speaking of Growing Up Skipper from above, Mattel had other questionable misfires with Barbie over the years. Like Earring Magic Ken:

    [image=http://www.blogcdn.com/www.walletpop.com/blog/media/import/488a1467-0037a-0342d-400cb8e1_9181.jpg]

    What was supposed to be a toy marketer's way to make Barbie's boyfriend cooler and hip him up for the '90s instead made him look, well.....I think you can understand why the doll was taken off store shelves after parents complained, and is now a big collectible, especially in the LGBT community.
