And now, the Rules:

This is a community of artists, and should behave as such. But for those who may have experienced some of the unrest and in other forum . . here are some definitions and rules:

Trolling (with help from [link=http://boards.theforce.net/user.asp?usr=223030]Chyren[/link] 12/12/99):

Trolling is many things.
a) Flaming: i.e. rude comments, insults, personal attacks, etc.
b) Fishing for flames. Usually takes the form of inane postings, useless pieces of boring information, etc.
c) Cascades: Endless meaningless threads the posters repeat the same phrase
over and over, or such like.
troll v.,n.
To post messages (most commonly flames or personal attacks) designed to attract hostile responses or flames;
An individual who chronically trolls in sense 1; regularly posts specious arguments, flames or personal attacks to a forum, discussion list, or in email for no other purpose than to annoy someone or disrupt a discussion. "Sometimes it's difficult to spot a troll."

Flaming:
The act of insulting another member. A bannable offense on the JC.

Spamming:
This is multiple posting of identical material across several Forums or
multiple posting of threads of highly similar content within the same Forum.

Also, frequent posting within threads for the sole purpose of raising post count without contributing anything of substance to the thread (eg. continual comments such as “Whoa” or “What he said”). Note that these are contextual definitions: the occasional non-contributional comment is not spamming, but a poster, the majority of whose remarks are of this nature, is spamming. Also, opening threads to advertise outside links. No exact administrator definition currently exists. Spamming can be a bannable offence on the JC.

And any comments or critiques directed towards other artists and their work should, of course, be tactful, tasteful and polite. We have a unique community here, one forged by our desire to create and learn. Let us try to keep it that way.

Thanks for listening, welcome to the Fan Art Board and have fun!
Here are a few more items to consider (thanks to [link=http://boards.theforce.net/user.asp?usr=694750]DarthBreezy[/link] and [link=http://boards.theforce.net/admin/userportal.asp?usr=316095]Otis_Frampton[/link]):

ARTISTS:

1) When posting artwork, use one thread for all of your work to avoid clogging the forum with redundant threads.

2) When you post an update, edit the thread title in the original post so that the changes are reflected, even if it just reads Thread Updated (posting date).

3) Use [link=http://boards.theforce.net/help/bb-codes]Markup Codes[/link] to create links to the images you are sharing. I cannot stress this enough. We Netizens are a lazy lot, and if we have to copy and paste a URL we may not be inclined to view your work. Sad, but true.

4) Remember to THANK the people who are commenting on your work, even if it is a constructive critique. This should be a given, but you'd be surprised at how often this simple courtesy is overlooked. And remember, not all users have time to comment.

5) If there are no comments made to your art thread please refrain from "upping" your thread with comments like: "Come on, people! Someone comment on my work!". This will not make people want to participate, trust me.

FELLOW FAN ARTISTS (or People Who Look At Our Pretty Pictures):

1) THANK YOU.

2) Say "hi"; once in a while. Those of us who put our art out there are a self-conscious lot, and like to feel comforted in knowing that we're not alone. Even if you're on short time, artists like to know that SOMEONE is seeing their work . . . don't make us grovel for Feedback! Especially first time posters . . . that first piece of artwork is so hard to post.

3) If you like the artwork, tell your freinds in the JC Community and in the real world. Spread the word.

4) If an artist has not posted in a while, remember: patience and politeness. If you're curious as to what we're up to, send us a friendly PM!
Posting a Picture(Image Hosting):

There are a few ways you can go about hosting an image here at the Fan Art Forum. You could either post a link highlighting your artwork or hotlink to the actual image.

As of right now, there is no function to actually allow direct linking to your hard drive or image uploading, so you will have to have your artwork hosted on the web somewhere.

Some websites I recommend include [link=http://www.photobucket.com]Photobucket[/link] or [link=http://www.imageshack.us/]Image Shack.[/link]
Critique Guidelines:

Critique Guidelines:
(Guidelines compiled together by [link=http://boards.theforce.net/user.asp?usr=407013]Princess-Leah[/link])

Constructive Criticism? Critique? What do they mean here?

Facilitating and promoting improvement and developement through a positive approach.

Encouragement not diminishment.

There is an art to constructive criticism. Not all persons with professional experience, or advice, have learned the proper way to communicate effectively with their peers, or others, in critical construction (not to say that artists don't have valuable information to pass on to others.) But, criticism given ineffectively through poor tactics is a hindrance to progress.

There are ways to dole out helpful information without dumping a bucket of sand on that spark of talent and passion. Knowing critical (critique) basics will help motivate and develop artists into confident creators willing to share their insights and artwork with their colleagues and budding artists in the future.

This set of guidelines has been created to help those giving or receiving criticism to work together towards solving fundamental issues with their works.

The guidelines:

Do's and Don't's of the critical evaluation:

Do...empathise with the artist whom you offer constructive assistance. It's a big step to open art and soul up for critique.

Don't...tell an artist they have a bad idea.

Do...keep in mind that those sharing their criticisms may have ideas and solutions that you haven't thought of. You asked for their help and they are giving it.

Do...tell an artist what they're doing right, placing criticisms between positive statements, focus on the solution not the weakness. Focusing only on weakenesses is counter productive.

Don't...intimidate; one-up or deliver judgement. This is destructive.

Do...make sure that the criticism being given is constructive to the situation. State the issue and let the artist fix it (if they choose to do so)

Do...ask the artist their thoughts and what they feel about your critique, adapt an attitude of a team member trying to help a colleague (regardless of their skill level). If you have your own artwork, then offer yours up for critique. This can only help stimulate artistic dialogue and expedite the learning process.

Don't...attack an artists traits/character, or degrade or demean their *works. It's unprofessional, distasteful and unwelcomed.

*Not everyone is trying for the professional art gig. Many people are creating simply because they love to express themselves in an artistic way and more than likely want to improve their abilities. It's best to leave the "big, bad world" stuff to teachers, mentors, jurors, and potential employers.

Don't...be in love with your solution. It is only one possibility, only one point of view. That goes for artists and critics alike.

Do...allow the artist being criticised to make their own decisions regarding your assistance. Prepare for the artists feedback...it may not always be positive, but they may be trying to work it out. Most people hunger for help and are grateful when it's presented positively allowing them to work the problem out for themselves.

Do...THANK those that have offered their assistance/advice and those that have braved posting their artwork.

Do...have fun and enjoy yourselves!

Feel the need to advise people intending to make their living with art? Create a thread dealing with the possible encounters and the issues that face every art student and professional artist. The good, the bad and the ugly.

Thanks! :)

I have a question, I know it isn't really fan art, but why isn there a thread for posting your animated movies, Flash movies for example?

I'm not sure what others think, but I see animation and flash programs more suited for the Fan Films forum. Although, if there is a demand for it here, I may reconsider it.

I think It should get a very own thread, It's not aspecially Fan film, because a animation doesn't have to be a film in particulair, it can also be a small image or a game... I don't know if there are more people working with GIF's or flash or something else in here, but I think It's agood idea to make a thread for it [face_peace]

I'm new to this forum...

From what I understand, we create a new thread of our own if we have pictures to display? Please tell me if I'm understanding this wrong.;)

I do have two to display at the moment. I just finished one prismacolor/graphite and one was done with computer.

Thanks,

Yep, that's the way it's done, Fett. Everyone gets 1 thread to post all their artwork, so when you have more, just come back and post it into your thread and update the title.

I'm assuming "wp's" are works in progress. If not, feel free to correct me.

On the subject of non-SW art. I have no problem if you guys share it as long as you post SW art somewhere along the way. This is a SW board afterall. ;)

Actually by wp's I meant Wallpaper's [face_blush] Sorry [face_blush] My fault.
The reason I ask is cause I have done about 10-15 Wallpapers but only a few have been Star Wars since I can't find enough good hi-res pics.
I guess I will go ahead and post my work since a friend of mine Jedi_Commander_Faofa has been bugging me to for a while
Hope you guys like[face_worried]
