I plan on buying a ParkSabers lightsaber sometime in the near future. I'm spending the extra money because they're practically indestructible. I don't know how to fight with a lightsaber, however, or any kind of sword. That's my biggest problem. I don't know which swordfighting styles are used in the movies. I've heard from various resources that alot of it is Kendo, and Dooku's style is Fencing. I never liked Dooku's style. Does anyone know what the other styles are? Also, are the other styles stand-alone, or do you have to know a bigger form of martial arts before you get into them? For instance: Would I have to train for Aikido if I wanted to learn Kendo? I'm pretty sure Kendo is stand-alone, but I was just using it as an example. Also, where would I go to look for training in Camden County?

I did a little research on this once before and if my memory serves me correctly all of the dueling is designed with and uses the core fencing basics and uses a more artistic form of swordfighting like Kendo to make it all come together and look more dramatic and appealing to watch. Aside from Darth Maul, who's style also utilized martial arts along with the dueling (one of Ray Park's specialties is hand-to-hand combat), I don't think there's anything else other than the fencing and Kendo factored in there.
You can make a technique that is of your own design but I think that there are still some resources that you'll have to take from fencing in order to get started.

Fencing is more of a stabbing style, and they don't do very much stabbing at all with lightsabers.

So you are buying a parksabers to duel with? If you want to learn to duel I'd suggest making a hilt from hardware buying a piece of pvc pipe to use as a blade to practice with rather than breaking a nice parksabers blade.

Dooku's style is NOT fencing. It may have elements of fencing, but also wood cutting, kendo, Chinese swordplay, etc.
I'd go with Buster's suggestion. Home Depot will suit you just fine, and it won't tax your wallet.

You're confusing ParkSabers with Master Replicas. ParkSabers are practically indestructible, they are perfect for dueling. I've heard this from various ParkSabers product owners. Master Replicas were NOT intended for use, only for show.

I'm not exactly good at building things, so I'm not gonna make a crappy-looking home-made saber that doesn't light up.

Smith-
I suggested the Home depot saber for practicing. Make mistakes with it, hit yourself in the head with it and not worry about esthetics. If you want to mess up your Parks, by all means do so.
As for instruction, try searching marital arts and Camden. Kendo schools or Akido schools would serve you best. For extreme knowledge, join the SCA.

Fencing is more of a stabbing style,
True, from an offensive standpoint, but fencing will also teach you how to defend yourself from incoming parries and swings. Like I said earlier, it's about the "core fencing basics" so that you can develop a proper stance and learn attack and defensive maneuvers before moving on to the more advanced forms of swordfighting.
Also, nobody is confusing a Parks with an MR saber. What you need to remember is that if you have a Parks and you're sparring with another person and take a direct hit on the fingers chances are you will drop the saber and it will hit the floor. The blades are "virtually" indestructable but the hilt can still suffer "wear-and-tear" from being dropped and hit.

Ahhh yes. When in doubt you can always rely on the ways of the Wookiee and just rip their arms out of their sockets .

I'd like you to meet a friend of mine. His name's Louie... but we just call him "Slugger" .

bat's are good!!!!!
I still would NOT buy a parksabers and trust that it would not break. that is JUST my personal opinion though. What type of material is this that is so indestructible.

The blades are made out of polycarbonate, an extremely durable plastic that most people who make EL blades use.
The blade will stand up to the beating but like I was saying earlier, if you want something to use while learning a nice hilt like a Parks will take a beating from all of the drops and hits it will take.

Actually I'm going to be buying a Kendo stick from Oriental Treasures next week for $40. It's really light, and long, and has a 2-hand sized handle.
About the Parks Sabers...
"Each blade is constructed with true 360° EL (electro-luminescent) lamp technology, housed inside an indestructible polycarbonite tube. "
Besides... No one else is going to have a lightsaber, so I really wouldn't be fighting with it as much as just practicing my form and shadow/ghost fighting.

Hello, All.
Jay Tee from Hawai'i, here. Was searching the N.J. boards for a friend of mine from CIII in here & happened upon this post string.
Since the subject is lightsaber combat, I wanted to ask y'all if you have seen the awesome fan film "Ryan Versus Dorkman". I was in line here in Hawai'i for the openning of Episode III when a fellow fan introduced me to it via his laptop computer.
"Ryan vs. Dorkman" can be found here on TheForce.net. Here's the link:
http://www.theforce.net/fanfilms/fxprojects/ryandork/index.asp
Since I've brought up the subject of fan films, I also wanted to mention another one I really like: "Pink Five". [Non-lightsaber related. My bad.]
http://www.atomfilms.com/af/content/pink5
As far as sabers go, have y'all also heard about LightTech Industries? A friend of mine who told me about Park's Sabers also told me about them. Personally, I haven't bought anything from either company yet but I do plan on having my own lightsaber someday.
May the [Good Side of the] Force be with you.
Jay Tee
P.S. If the fan film info above is old news to anyone, my apologies. However, I would love to hear about other fan films that you have seen that you would recommend. Feel free to private message me since this isn't the right post string for the subject..... Thanx!
