Erm, here's my modest little contribution - summaries from the Rick McCallum & John Knoll's chats from today (July 17):


McCallum's 5 Minute Chat - July 17,2003
  • Mace Windu's role will be bigger and unforgettable.

  • Christopher Lee has arrived in Sydney but has not started shooting.

  • Vader may have more screentime than originally anticipated.

  • Keira Knightley is not in Ep3

  • The scenes for the EU character will not be shot until 2004 and no one has been cast for the part at this time.

  • Rick is most looking forward to the Anakin/Obi-Wan duel.

  • Tatooine will "tie everything together" in Ep3.



John Knoll Chat - July 17, 2003

  • The Clone Troopers will again be CG, yet different than seen before.

  • Ep3 will contain roughly the same amount of visual effects as AOTC.

  • John's primary responsibility during principal photography is to look for potential problems that could develop further down the line, and to ensure that they get what they'll need for post production.

  • John argues for sets to be built as fully as possible, and to be augmented with effects. He feels it not only makes his job easier, but brings with it a sense of realism.

  • Revealed that Wat Tambor is back, and badder.

  • Revealed that page 7, word twelve of the script is "trench".

  • There's more planets in Ep3 than any previous SW film.

  • Said there will probably be easter eggs in the film, but that none are currently planned.

  • Said there will be some spectacular battles.

  • There are no plans for a CG Chewbacca.

  • When asked about the title, said he knew of a title.

  • When asked if anyone would have a jetpack, mentioned Artoo in his reply.

  • Said we'd be seeing more of Coruscant when asked if we'd be seeing anything new of the planet.

  • When asked if we'd be seeing another step from the Republic ships to the Imperial ships, said that it was an evolution that we'd see more of in Ep3.

  • Said that previsualization started about six months ago and would continue until a few months before the film was finished.

  • Said that droids would again be CG.

  • When asked if there were effects he did not know about that might be necessary later, he replied that that was normal for working on SW films.

  • The current plan is for Anakin to have the same metallic hand he had at the end of AOTC.

  • When asked if we'd see Watto again, replied that we would if we popped in the AOTC DVD.

  • Is expecting the same amount of work to be required for Ep3 as was required for the last two.

  • When asked if he's had to tell George he couldn't do something, replied that that's not something you say to George.

  • No CG bounty hunters in Ep3 that he knows of at the moment.

  • The choice of green screen over blue screen is stipulated by things such as fleshtones and clothing. He sited Artoo's blue panels as a reason they use green screen for his scenes. As for the color of the sticks they use for lightsabers, he said that the color has no real importance.

  • Mace still has a purple lightsaber.

  • When asked what Padme and Threepio would see when they looked out the palace set window, replied that they would see a wonderful matte painting, and that a fan-made piece he'd seen online was actually a fairly good representation.

  • When asked to comment on the elevator set and the fact that it looked Imperial, almost like the Death Star, he replied that it was not the Death Star.

Btw, the Sunday show had a profile of Rose Byrne this morning - and had absolutely no mention of SW at all - they completely snubbed any movie that wasn't 'Australian.'


Oh, another new spoiler from HS:

  • They are filming a scene with Palpatine, Sly Moore, Mas Ammedda, and two red royal guards in a balcony overlooking a theatre - with an empty seat for an expected 'guest.'

Three Sets In One
July 21, 2003

• Two of the three sets used today are small "bridge" environments for characters to transition from one set to another.

• Shoot Day 16 starts with reversal angles of the Coruscant Theater. The previous shooting focused on the seated characters, while today focuses on angles behind them, looking out over their shoulders toward the stage show.

• The next set is a starship boarding ramp. R2 and 3PO will be in a scene going down the ramp.

• Padmé and Obi-Wan join C-3PO, hurrying down the ramp to meet Bail Organa at its base.

• Later, this set is transformed into a lobby.

• Four Jedi walk through the lobby set which is an environment that will be completely digital in the finished film.

• The final set is a new Coruscant landing platform. R2 will be in this scene. Three wind machines blast the actors on the first take.

• Large fans provide wispy clouds of smoke to waft into frame of the windy environment on Coruscant.

I am especially interested in the fans on Coruscant. Could this be the start of the Jedi Purge?

Possibly.

This theatre scene has me intrigued - even though its a last minute addition. But GL's last minute additions are usually the most interesting scenes.

Some interesting news that seems to have slipped past the E3 discussion thread:

  • Bruce Spence, interviewed in the SMH, said that he plays the alien leader of a planet that harbours and gives assistance to "a fugitive Obi-Wan Kenobi."


  • A recent set diary said that Spence's alien is inspired by a Boris Karloff character

Thats pretty neat about the "fugitive" Kenobi!!

I saw on spoilers allowed page someone slipped in that they heard a rumour that when Anakin becomes Vader he fights hundreds of Jedi in one go and wins.
If that happens then it will be the best SW ever.

I'm thinking maybe there was a typing error, instead of a fugitive Obi Wan, maybe they meant Anakin?

Unless it happens after all the other Jedi are killed.

I'm guessing all the Jedi becomes fugitives - outlawing the Jedi is the easiest way to get rid of them in a hurry.

Another theory is that he is wanted for "killing" Anakin, hero of the clone wars ... ie, Obi-Wan wins The Duel, Anakin becomes Vader, and to explain Anakin's disappearance, and frame Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan is charged with Anakin's murder. So he goes on the run, changes his name to Ben ...

Who knows.

Well, the original person that I heard my spoiler from hasnt said yes or no, but I have since heard the same thing from someone else, so the news must be slipping out.


And no, it isnt on that list. Well done the Robi!


One thing i heard is that Ani n Obi have floppy almost 70's like hairdos, to help bridge the look between 3 and 4.

Ill find out if i can say anything as soon as i can, ok?

Well, the first person hasnt given me the go-ahead, but the second has and they barely know each other, so theres no chance it could be blamesd on person 1.

So here we go.


They are building the set for the Millenium Falcon. Full exterior, and possibly interior.
