It's been a bit of a welcome break from the routine, and a throwback to suburbanism: I go to the job in a carpool now (which moreover has proven to be more efficient, timely, and scenic than the usual grind!) and -- gasp! -- have to drive to the local mall to get some shopping done! (Queens Center: Blade Runner-like mobbed h*ll). The real kick in the blanched-almonds is that going to certain stores or other locations in the city that were otherwise just a few subway stops away is now impossible. The TWU is using extortionist tactics and IMHO deserve to be crammed onto a 7 train that grinds to a halt between stations and never, ever moves again.
Perhaps Ebenezer Toussaint will be visited by three spirits this Saturday night, and have a change of heart . . .

The only drawback of this so far is that this is keeping me from just hopping on the subway to get to Union Square and see the other Christmas Market before it closes. I could take a cab, but I'm not paying big $$$ just to do some window shopping. And walking round trip will wear me out.
If they're still striking tomorrow, I might just flag down one of those dudes on bikes pulling carts.

It's Over!!!

From the AP:
Union Says NYC Transit Strike Is Over
AP - NEW YORK - The city's crippling three-day mass transit strike ended Thursday after union leaders — facing mounting fines, possible jail terms and the wrath of millions of commuters — voted to return their 33,000 members to work without a new contract. Union board members who emerged from the organization's headquarters said workers will return to their job sites starting with the next shifts. The vote was overwhelmingly in favor of returning to work, and resuming negotiations with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
Good luck guys. I hope you found my previous post to be in jest rather than @$$-hole-ish. . . . just trying to be lively.

Allie: Don't worry, I laughed! Especially at the speed limit bit.
Wow, it's over, and without a change in contracts. Way to go, MTA - causing crap for millions of people and all in vain.

It's not the MTA, it's the TWU Local 100. At least they're negotiating now. I wonder if those fines will be levied after all.

According to Gov. Pataki there is no recource with the fines. They're automatic under the Taylor law. What the MTA COULD do is give each worker bonuses for returning to offset the fines though.

plans..... ?
Hopefully the night buses will still be running else its walking, cars and taxis for all! Either that or walk around aimlessly 'till afternoon on the 1/1/2006 when the tubes start running again.
Come to think of it, thats what most Londoners do after a New Year's party anyway so it shouldn't be too much of a problem!
