Hi guys! Myself, some upper New Yorkers, and a few Virginians are going to be heading to your area in just under two weeks. We really have no itinerary; we just want to do a few things (see Central park, something on broadway, etc), but we have no real plans.

Anyone got any ideas for fun (somewhat cheap) things for a bunch of college kids to do in the city? happy

Seems like it's FanForce exchange season... cool

There are plenty of fun and free/inexpensive things to do. Mass transit will be your friend, as it's the cheapest way to get around, and our system is extensive and generally reliable with its 24 subway lines and hundreds of bus routes. (It had better be; with some of the highest car insurance rates and most impossible parking situations on Earth, many of us don't have cars.) A $7.00 unlimited one-day Metrocard is your ticket to explore NYC. You can get a one-week unlimited too, for $26.00.

Here's a (very) brief list of things to see and do, by neighborhood:

Times Square: Oooo, pretty lights! hypnotized Move along...

Upper West Side: Grab a bagel at H&H (Broadway at 80th St.), the essential "New York Bagel." Visit the American Museum of Natural History and take a stroll through Central Park. You'll work up quite an appetite, so why not chow down at Big Nick's ?

Upper East Side: The Metropolitan Museum of Art can easily occupy your entire day.

Greenwich Village: Walk the entire length of Bleecker Street (starting from Hudson St. in the West Village) for some great sightseeing, shopping, and of course eating. Grab a table at John's Pizzeria to experience real New York pizza. (No asparagus and shiitake mushrooms on this stuff! wink ) Fuel your brain with a great coffee at The Grey Dog's Coffee , and head south towards SoHo to catch an indie film at the Angelika .

SoHo: The neighborhood south of Houston Street is home to many art and photo galleries and upscale fashion boutiques. The architecture is quite striking and unique.

No trip to New York City in the summertime is complete without visiting Coney Island . Ride the Cyclone and get some hot dogs at Nathan's -- in that order. wink

You could do like me, eat the hot dogs, ride the Cyclone, eat another hot dog, ride again, repeat! JK, don't do that lol sick .

To repeat what my husband said, Upper West Side is the place to be grin . But we're partial, we used to live there happy .

Times Sq - money_eyes look at the lights, stop in the giant Toys-r-Us and ride the ferris wheel, then leave as fast as possible (gets pretty crowded on weekends and towards the night).

I'm also partial to Bleecker St, seeing as I work on it. Very trendy street filled with celebrities like Uma Thurman (saw her this Friday walking around), Sarah Jessica Parker (lives on Charles St. just off Bleecker), Carson Kressly of Queer Eye, Heidi Klum, Natalie Portman (stopped in our store a few times last year), and many more grin . Be sure to have your camera handy, you might spot someone happy .

Let us know if you want to meet up grin

West Village in the hizzouse! Okay, not really, but that's my favorite neighborhood in Manhattan. tongue Along with the Financial District for its architecture. You feel like you're walking around ancient Greece or Rome - or a Clone Wars cartoon, if you want to be really geeky.

And if you want to see something really crazy, go to Astor Place (take the 6 train) to surround yourself with three Starbucks.

I also highly recommend walking down the West Side Highway. Start from a street like Morton or a little more to the south, so you don't have to trek too far. Once you walk far enough, you'll get a pretty good view of the Statue of Liberty, and there are some nice places to explore around that area.

If you're feeling brave, play around in the water at Coney Island. I promise it's not completely awful. Just watch where you step on the sand. tongue

I'll be flying in the 18th (I also need to find something to do for like 3-6 hours before I can check into my hotel in Newark, *HINT*) and I leave the 21st. happy

We want to see SOMETHING on broadway (the boys have their hearts set on the Producers, but I just want to see ANYTHING), but we can't afford the $100 a ticket they want online. Moriah told me about the box office in Time Square: usually how much are those tickets?

I'm kinda bummed; we were checking out the typical touristy stuff to do, and they charge you to go into the Empire State building now? That's sucky. sad

How ya doin', Miana Kenobi . . .

The box office in Times Square is called tkts and the prices vary but generally are about half of what you'd pay otherwise. The catches are that they are sold only on the same day of the show (except Saturday matinees, which you can purchase on Fridays), that what shows are on offer changes -- they post out front what shows are available on B'way, "Off Broadway", and "Off Off Broadway" -- and that they only take ca$h or Travellers' Checks.

"No; there is another . . . "
But wait; there's more! tkts in Times Sq. often gathers a very long line . . . but its second location in Lower Manhattan (a.k.a. Downtown / the Financial District / Wall St. area) is just as serviceable! Take a 2,3,A,C,or E subway downtown to the Fulton Street stop and then ask for where the South Street Seaport -- a place worth checking out itself -- is.

One bit of advice -- if when on the sidewalk or subway steps and you want to stop to look around or check your maps or whatever -- step aside. Do. Not. Block. The. Flow. Of. Pedestrian. Traffic!

Enjoy your visit!

Will, I'll be there the 18-21. And if I don't see you then, I'll see you two when you come out to San Diego in a few weeks. tongue

Jade - LOL, seriously.

John - That would be awesome. I know the boys coming up from Virginia won't get there until later, and I have no clue when the two from Rochester/Buffalo are gonna get there, so I'll be pretty much by myself most of Friday. I'm trying to figure out what to do in the morning, since I can't check in until noon at the earliest. tongue
