Dutchman going to NYC

Greetings from Holland, everyone! I'm a frequent poster at the Collecting Boards and LAJ_Fett directed me to the NY FF boards. You see, me and my girl are going on a trip to NYC and we're totally looking forward to it! We've been reading a lot about the city and sights and we've also marked a lot of locations in Google Earth.
But nothing beats hints and tips from the people of the city, right? Especially on comic stores, toy stores (hey, gotta buy some SW stuff, since we have zilch here in Holland), places to eat..., sights that one wouldn't think of right away....
Hope to read some of your comments

Hi Incom,
when are you coming over to NYC? We would love to meet up with you & your girl.
As far as comic stores, I happen to be the resident comic geek in this group.
There are many stores in the city. The biggest for books is Midtown Comics. They have 2 locationsin the city; 40th Street & 7th Avene & 45th St & Lexington. Their web address is www.midtowncomics.com. There is also Jim Hanleys on 33rd street acroos the street from the Empire State Building. There is also Collectors Universe (I think thats the name). They are on 46th street around 5th Ave. If your travels take you more towards Greenwich Village, you have St. Marks comics on St. Marks place between 2nd Ave & 3rd Ave. However the best in the Village is Forbidden Planet on 13th Street & Broadway. They tend to have more older toys and books. There is also Village Comics located insode Bleeker Bob's records at 118 West 3rd Street.
For toy stores, there is Toys R Us Times Sq located at 44th & Broadway & FAO Schwartz on 56th st & 5th Ave.
For Sights there is Central Park, Times Square, The Village, Wall Street and so on. Dont forget Coney island in Brooklyn :-D
As far as places to reat, I will let Benae Quee & Obi Will recomend places since they know the best palces to eat in the city.
Hope this helps
John

Wow - Forbidden Planet is still there? I went years ago when I lived in Connecticut (before I moved to the UK). Definitely try to go there, Incom!
We have one in London - just close enough by train from where I live. It's dangerous money-wise!

Thanks for the tips, John! I already put Forbidden Planet on my list (it's mentioned in one of the books), and I see on Google Earth, St.Mark's Bookshop isn't far from it. We're thinking of filling our days with something cultural/tourist combined with a bit of shopping and such.
I also want to pay a visit to Rudy's, since I play guitar myself. That was the only one mentioned, though. Any other good music (and record) stores?
I also read, that it's pretty common in New York to eat out, even breakfast? Since it's the most important meal of the day (along with second breakfast, eleventies, lunch, after lunch, high tea, supper, dinner...... ), what are good locations to have a good breakfast? I'll wait for Benae Quee and Obi Will to comment on that.
By the way, I checked this thread just now. Lots of good advice there as well, I see. Sorry I didn't see that before.
What I'm really eager to experience is listening to New York conversations. I've always been pretty good in English at school, but the different accents really appealed to me. And the US have so many to choose from!
I'm a huge fan of the band "Fun Lovin' Criminals" who are from NYC. On their latest album, almost every song is about New York City. It'd be great to actually visit the places they sing about (well, not all I think, since they also sing about the darker side of NY )

EDIT: You must have been typing as I was LOL. This is simply a repeat of what was stated in that thread
Central park has a lot to offer http://www.centralparknyc.org/ check them out for things happening while you are here.
SOHO has great shopping with Antique stores and small boutiques galore (I'm partial since I work down there )
Food is great around Union Square
Union Square Cafe - My FAVORITE restaurant in the city.
Heartland Brewery - The beer sampler is quite good.
Blue Water Grill - Great seafood
Chat 'n' Chew - Great Americana food like fried chicken and mac-n-cheese
Other places you can eat in the city that are great...
Gray's Papaya (and ONLY Gray's, avoid eating any place named otherwise that sounds similar - it's not the same )
Big Nicks Pizza and Burger Joint on Broadway (not the one on Columbus) - about 30 different Hamburgers to choose from as well as ANYTHING else you may want to eat, 23 hour breakfast too
Katz's Deli Downtown - the place to go for good Jewish pastrami and corned beef. They slice it right in front of you and offer a peice as they make your sandwich.
Always be sure to try a Beard Papa's (many locations) - delicious, fresh cream puffs
Joe's Pizza (as seen in Spider Man 1) for a Slice and John's Pizza (on Bleecker - aroudn the corner from Joe's) for a pie of the BEST NYC pizza.
Pho Viet Huong in China Town for great Vietnamese Food
Big Wong for cheap and delicious chinese food (China Town)
China Town Ice Cream Factory - THE best ice cream in the world! I HIGHLY recommend the Black Sesame flavor
While in China Town be sure to stop by Ten Ren Tea and Company for a Taro Bubble Tea YUM!
If you feel up to trekking out of Manhattan, try the Original Nathan's Hotdog in Coney Island and ride the Cyclone while you are there Also, be sure to stroll the boardwalk.
Brooklyn also has Junior's Cheesecakes, Waterfront Ale House, and Peter Luger Steakhouse.
I could go on and on, but this list should keep you pretty busy while here grin If you need to find anything else in NYC, be sure to visit http://newyork.citysearch.com for all your searching needs
PS: If walking around Times Sq. I can't stress enough how important it is to step aside when staring up at the lights and tall buildings or while taking a picture. This city never stops moving, and locals really hate to stop walking because a tourist doesn't step aside to ooh and ahh over it

Indeed, fast response there Benae Quee. I forgot to mention we will definately be checking out Coney Island and Nathan's .
What store do you work in then? My girl is always in for a few stops at antique stores and small boutiques. I don't think she'd think it'd be a good idea meeting complete strangers in a strange city, but I'm pretty sure I can 'lure' her into it, haha!
And those eating joints, wow, what list! We'll only be staying for eight days (minus two days' of flight). Hmmm, must... plan... return.... trip.... already!

There's also a Waterfront Ale House in Manhattan on 30th and 2nd Ave, but I like Brooklyn better. Never mind that I haven't been to the one in Manhattan.
And regarding stepping aside, don't restrict yourself to just Times Square. Remember the subways, buses, sidewalks, and department stores! But don't worry about the streets and bike lanes. Assert your right of way!

Heh, must be the Italian influence then. It's commonly known that in Italy the same attitude regarding right of way applies. I'll keep that in mind .
Only one more day at work, a couple of days relaxing at home and on Tuesday it's off to NYC! Another thing popped up: is it hard to get tickets for a Rangers game? I've been a hockey fan ever since I played EA Sports NHL'95 and have acquired every issue since. I don't see much hockey on tv, unless I count the Olympics, but I think it's a really cool game.

Incom,
The NHL season begins on 10/5. You may be able to get tickets for a pre season game if they are at home at the Box Office at MSG. How long are you in NYC for? If you are still around on October 7th, let me know so we can meet up.
Best
John

We're in NYC from 10/3 till 10/10. Should be fun meeting some of you guys. Can't speak for my girl though. She's totally not into SW and always want to check my temp whenever I get excited about something from that GFFA. So I can't promise you anything, but who knows! However, if you have a couple of free tickets, that'd most certainly win her over . j/k, dude!

Well, we're all set for NYC! We're quite excited about this little vacation
John, I got your message and will try to visit the festival at Tryon Park. Hopefully the weather's not too bad!
Kristin, we'll try and stop by your shop. And maybe we'll meet up at the festival!
Off to bed, tomorrow's a busy day! Well, not that busy: we're spending a third of it sitting in an airplane and another third of it checking in and out various locations
