"I never thought to see you here. You've got nerve, you know!"
James Potter paced the ground he walked on inside his backyard in Godric's Hollow. The house loomed with the lights off and he was most thankful that his wife was finally asleep. They had a scare with the baby. Lily had dropped to the floor in such great pain they both thought the baby would be gone. She was only six months along and it had been so greatly frightening.
The healers at Saint Mungo's ordered bed rest, and Lily and himself decided together it would be best they both listened to Albus, and stayed out of the war for as long as possible while they waited out the rest of the pregnancy.
It had been what she read in the muggle paper that had set off her pains. The hospital had called it false labor, but James knew it had been set off from what she had read.
One of their kind had set fire to her uncle and aunt's house, killing their youngest child, Lily's cousin, Augustine. Lily had called her the most delightful little girl with bright red hair.
It had been Death Eaters having their so-called fun. Taking an innocent life in the process, and then not caring because it wasn't one of their kind. How could they not get involved again? Lily would demand they return to Grimmauld Place until those responsible were found.
James was thankful she slept as it would put off another difficult conversation until morning. Also, it would greatly upset his wife if she could see who had decided to pay them a late night visit. It had been almost six years since James himself had seen this
man. They had been boys then. Enemies in childhood. It was a time James best fought to forget.
With years passing, going to university, and going on to marry Lily, James truly believed he would never see this man again. This man had been in love with the woman who had eventually become his own wife for as long as James could remember
knowing him. He was grateful he never remained apart of Lily's life after leaving Hogwarts. Not because of the challenge for her affection he would pose if she ever found out his feelings, the fear was born from something much greater.
When you looked at this man now, he had a way of drawing people to him. It was an unseen magic he worked with Lily in their childhood it seemed, and it would be most dangerous to her now. Gone was the innocent boy who Lily had loved like family
with her entire heart, and what was left was a dangerous man who cared for nothing, and was not above using anyone for the gain of himself and his new friends. He would use Lily's love for the boy he once had been for gain of the man he was now. It was something James would not ever allow to happen.
"I know what happened. I wanted to know if she was..."
"If she was what, Snape? Still alive?" James snapped. "Lily's fine, now! Her family is another story though!" James wanted to hit this man, and he wanted to do much worse to him. His friends caused his dear wife, and her family, an unimaginable suffering that would never be fully healed. Could he not understand that? Could he feel nothing anymore? "A family tonight lost a six-year-old little girl that will never be returned to them. Lily herself nearly lost our baby because she had been so greatly upset at what she had seen in that bloody trash muggle paper she reads. You know what she seen, Snape?" James shouted.
Snape stepped back from the man. He wanted nothing of his anger. He simply wanted to know if she was still safe. She was the only person that ever mattered to him. More than his own family.
"She saw your face in a picture of their burning house!" James roared. "Do you have any idea what that did to her? Her beloved childhood friend is nothing but a cruel and heartless murderer. I would kill you right here, right now, if I didn't think it would only cause her more pain! "
Tears swam his own eyes. Snape stepped back again and rubbed the thick black hair from his face. All he could see was the small girl who died. He hadn't been apart of what they had done. He had arrived when the house was burning already, and the
family had been screaming. He had to come here when he found out who the house had belonged to was none other than John and Margaret Evans, and their three young children. Lily's favorite aunt and uncle.
"I never...I wasn't...." Snape dropped to his knee's before the man and wept brokenly. It was becoming all too much. He wanted to die for the part he played, and he truly had come here to allow Lily to do the deed if she would. He hadn't taken part of the crime, but it did not matter. He was one of them!
"Get out of here, Snape!" James finally spoke after wiping away his own tears. "If she sees you I will kill you! Lily deserves some peace! Stay out of her life!"
With a snapping sound, Severus Snape was gone out of thin air. High above to the second floor of the Potter's house a woman with long red hair could be seen standing at the window. The woman was crying from the scene she had watched play out in
her own back yard. She was crying for the best friend she had lost, and especially for the friendship that had to die because of the choices each had made.
Lily was a married woman with a family to consider and protect. The recent loss of her dear cousin reminded Lily only more firmly where her heart truly was. James was everything to her, and the mere thought of losing him broke her heart a thousand
times over. Gone was the selfish and cruel boy from her school days, and along came a gentle and kindhearted man who had swept her off her feet.
It had been in their final year at Hogwarts when she had fallen in love with James Potter. He had changed so much with the loss of his parents. He had been given no choice but to finally grow up. And somewhere along the way, Lily had had fallen in love with him. It was too difficult to say when it had happened exactly. Lily knew it was around the same time that her best friend had stopped speaking to her.
Lily wanted to go after Severus. Lily knew she still could. She also knew that nothing good would come from it. He was a Death Eater since late into their Sixth Year at Hogwarts. She had begged him to change his mind. Severus had only pushed her away even more. He had grown to hate her for the growing relationship she had with James even then. Perhaps it had been out of jealousy. Lily had never been certain why her friend had come to hate her so much. Out of all the years they had been such good friends, best friends, Severus Snape had never told Lily that he loved her before.
The look upon his face this night had confessed it for him. It also told Lily that he wasn't party to what had happened to her family like she had originally feared.
Lily placed a firm hand to her pregnant belly to remind herself that her unborn son was still inside of her, and he was safe from those that had so harmed their family this night.
"Lily?"
Lily turned to see her husband standing behind her and she fell into his arms. "Oh, James. Please, hold me!"
"I'm so sorry that you saw that, Lily. I know that he's still important to you, so I let him leave. We need to find a new place to live for awhile until the baby comes. It's not safe here now that he knows where you live."
"No, Severus would never give us away. I know he won't." Lily told him sternly.
"Lily, he's no longer the boy you knew. I know that you want to believe there's still something good about him, but he's done so many terrible things. We can't trust him. Not when we have our own baby to think about now. We can go to Sirius'. I know that he'll take us in. His mother died awhile ago. She won't be there anymore. It will be all right."
"I don't want to leave our home again, James." Lily pleaded softly. "I don't care if Sirius' stuffy old bat of a mother is dead."
"Lily, such language!" James teased.
"Oh, please. You've heard Sirius call her much worse." Lily managed to chuckle.
James then hugged her tightly. "Please, sweetheart. I can't risk you." James whispered against her red hair.
"Okay, then. Once the baby comes, we come back here though. Promise?"
"Strait away. I can see Harry playing on his broom stick in the living room right now."
"Oh, I don't think so. And I don't want him on one of those things until he's at least ready for Hogwarts."
"If he's anything like me he'll be flying out of the delivery room, my love."
Lily then laughed heartily and hugged James close again. She could always count on her husband to bring her up from even the most darkest of places inside of her heart. It was one of the many reasons why she loved him.
Over his shoulder she stole one last look towards the back yard again. Oh, if things were only different. If only they still could have been friends. It was so strange not sharing these parts of her life with the one person she used to tell all of her secrets too.
He'd miss it all. Family dinners, holidays, her son being born...
As much as it broke her heart to do so, Lily went back inside her bedroom with James and packed for the journey ahead of them.
