RE: The Xavier Institute for Higher Learning: Path of Heroes
IC: Wolf
Mansion Lawn
Wolf's eyes glittered eerily as they reflected the moon light around him, the golden hue standing out clearly, unnervingly in the night. He could tell straight away that the kids facing them weren't about to let them pass, The former Sifu rocked his head side to side loosening his neck muscles. His mind cleared as he readied himself, yet already the beast inside him began to rage, the feral desire to tear and kill...to survive made his lip draw back in a silent snarl his long canines glinting whitely in the night air.
Kids and students these people maybe but a lifetime of training told Wolf never underestimate an opponent, even one who couldnt fully control their powers..that atleast made them less predictable. He threw his head back as a long, haunting howl tore from his throat, echoing across the air, he flowed into a low tiger stance...the hunt begins.

IC:Lera
Infirmary
As soon as Xaiver took the collar off of Lera she felt her power flow back. She had always thought is had caused her much distress but as she felt it again she was commforted. Power crackled over her in a visual display before calming down.
Lera felt the electricity flow over her and closed her eyes. When she opened them her eyes were under control and she could see. Now her eyes were returned to their normal apperance. Professer Xaiver asked how she was and Lera smiled. "My eyes are fine. And I'm okay. Kinda freaked about some stuff to do with my powers. But that can wait. I have so many things to ask you. Is Thera okay? I thought...well,it's kinda hard to explain. Mostly due to the fact I have no idea how it works...but you're here! Well, are you? I mean, really here? Everything has been so confuseing without you..."Lera trailed off as she felt an odd feeling from the Professer.
She couldn't tell what his normal dispotion had changed to as she could with Thera,Iori,or Karra but it felt different. Her smile faded and she tipped her head to the side, was something going on? Lera didn't ask,not wanting to interrupt the Professer's conectration. Her joy radiated from her, viusally is tiny sparks that couldn't be dampened. Not that she wanted them to be. Lera didn't see the harm in letting the Professer know how happy she was.

IC: Toga
Hammer Bay, The Citadel, Citadel Lounge
Lilith smiled at Toga as she posed in the doorway, nearly all eyes in the room glaring.
"You look radiant... and such an outfit deserves a larger audience."
The dark woman commented as she got up.
"Plaga, Kinetic...Toga and myself are planning to get some fresh air. Feel free to join us if you so desire."
Lilith spoke directly into the minds of the dancing pair, even as she began to make her way out of the V.I.P lounge.
"Let's go Toga."
Lilith said softly, as she glided her dark curvacious form out of the Citadel Lounge.
"Lets." Toga replied naturally. She exited the VIP Lounge as a complete constrast to the dashing woman ahead. A costume change for Toga was that of a complete shift in character. The boots she clad were enormously chunky and heavy and sounded deeply as they hit the floor and although the outfit in itself was revealing, the material and style gave the impression of 'this is someone you do NOT want to mess with.' Toga changed from an elegant and agile goddess to a surprisingly glamorous ogre of battle. A little less... subtle of her abilities.

RE: The Xavier Institute for Higher Learning: Path of Heroes
Gregory Balis
Infermary, Xavier Mansion
He could hear noise. Lots of it. Voices, monitors beeping, medical instruments being dropped. Oddly enough, the sounds were familiar, comforting almost. He'd spent a large amount of time in the Infermary, coming in for tests and evaluations, outbursts, or even just to talk. But for things to be this busy, it could only mean trouble. And as the memories started to come back to him, Greg knew he was part of the trouble.
His flashed open, the yellow tinting them for a moment before changing to their normal green. Greg let his head fall to one side and was surprised to find it not strapped in place. They must really be busy down here to forget that. What if Ogre were to...
On cue, the malicious being inside him rose up in his mind, taking control of his right arm. He swung it up to grab at some wires that were attached to Greg's body and they both regretted it immediately. Immense pain flared up in his arm from the bone that was broken. Even through his grimace, Greg smiled. His plan had worked. Ogre now had a weak spot.
His throat muscles clenched up and his mouth moved on it own. Ogre's voice spoke forth. "You think that's funny?"
The muscles relaxed and Greg answered back with his own voice. "Just a little. It hurts like heck, but it's worth it."
"Laugh it up. You'll pay for this."
"What are you going to do? You're injured."
"See that's where you're wrong.
You
are injured. A little pain never stopped me."
Greg laughed. It was good feeling. "We'll see."
To those around him, he probably sounded like he was possessed. Two voices coming out of the sam person, talking to eath other. Greg didn't really care anymore. He was just tired. Mentally tired. Ogre took avantage of that. as if drawing on some unseen power source, he viciously slammed Greg's mind into the perverbial backseat and retook control of his body, transforming so quickly the bed colapsed beneath him. Ogre stood up, taking care not to move his right arm too much. He reached for the person nearest to him, Wei Chen, grabbing the boy around the neck and pinning him to his chest. Even with just the one hand, he still had a fairly strong grip on him.
"Where's N'dare? I want to talk to him."

ic: Plaga
Citadel Lounge
Plaga
continued with her seductive dance, watching as the men around the room swayed. Entranced with both attraction and envy, they did not even seem to blink. There was a sudden change in their attitude, the doors swung open and a woman in a very revealing outfit walked in, it took
Plaga
a second to realise who it was. The men shifted their gaze and watched the newest addition to
Lilith
's femme fatales.
"Plaga, Kinetic...Toga and myself are planning to get some fresh air. Feel free to join us if you so desire."
Plaga
noddded to this message and immediatly ceased dancing. She strode towards the door without even looking back to see if
Kinetic
would follow. If he did, she would be happy, but if he didn't it would not bother her for long. Her plan for Kay Swan's capture was most important to her right now.

Jayson Moore "Plasma"
Xavier Mansion
"I don't think I want to be here anymore." Jayson said under his breath. He hadn't even been here 24 hours, and already his overall health and safety had been threatened. For no reason!
And Jayson couldn't tell if this was a normal occurance, or just some freak accedent, because, frankly, no one acted surprsied.
Roxanne would know.
Where is Rox?
Jayson thought, becomming himself, still ready to 'shift' into another form of protection for Enzo or Geoff. Their two new attackers seemed to be distracted, screaming in pain for no apperent reason.
"Let's get out of here!"
Without waiting on the other two to get off the ground, Jayson jogged down the corridor. To where, he didn't know, but he knew he had to get somewhere safer.
Like... out of the mansion.
... Or Roxanne's room.
Or...
Jayson stopped. He needed to go to the infermery. Kay was still in there. Who knew if anyone was in there to protect her. Roxanne could take care of herself.
With that, Jayson headed to the inferemy.
Again...

Roxanne Moore "Hourglass"
Chronoverse
Had she stopped time? Thinking back on it, Roxanne was sure she hadn't. But yet, these people were frozen in time again. Crossing her arms across her chest, Roxanne looked over the frozen children.
"Okay, Roxanne... you're dreaming... just... unfreeze them, and see what happens. You're being stupid." She said to herself. "This is all in your mind. Everything is in your mind. Just unfreeze them and this will all end."
With a sigh from Roxanne, time continued again. Roxanne awaited the woman to respond, either with a scream of terror or a welcoming bellow.
Hopefully the latter.

RE: The Xavier Institute for Higher Learning: Path of Heroes
Lazer and NightFall
Infirmary, Restricted Area, Xavier Mansion
Lazer held on tightly to NightFall. From within the confines of NightFall's cloak, she could feel the pain and suffering of diffrent individuals around the mansion, but there was no stopping now. NightFall was moving as a thing possessed, and she was not about to interrupt his travels. He moved at a dizzying rate throught the mansion, slipping in the shadows as he moved by leaps in bounds.
Soon, she became aware of something else, and she shivered slightly. There had to be another nearby, for NightFall was true wraith now. The cloak, she could now feel its unliving presence, moving swiftly now, as it sought out its victim. It hungered, and demanded to be compensated, for being distrubed. The other, who had dared awaken it. She could feel the darkness grown around her, and only the safety area, that NightFall still controlled, seemed to be the only steady thing around her, besides her own light around her. Her light steadied the dark. She felt sorry, for what ever creature would meet in his way. She had only seen NightFall this way a few other times, and it had not been pleasant those times either. She only hoped that none of Xavier's students were nearby. In such a state, she would have to work hard to control his other half. It was her light, that helped NightFall. The cloak moved around her, whirling itself around her body. They had found what they were looking for. She could feel it. The cloak for some reason was hiding her even deeper within it's dark folks of cloth, the material holding her gently.
THAT
was ususual. What was NightFall planning? Whatever it was, he was saying nothing, so she would have to go off his cues.
They moved. That which was NightFall and the other had found the source of its hunger and misery. , was busy 'skipping' throught parts of the mansion at a fantastic rate, moving throughout the many shadows that resided within the mansion. He was looking for what had dared tried to reach out, and touch his mind. To call forth ... something they should not have touched. Nighfall was furious. But the other was even MORE furious. Something tried to touch that which was HIS. Just as it now reached out and touched the other lower levels ones within the building. But it had made a fatal mistake. This was HIS domain. It's dark touch had been there, from beyond time immortal. IT was the thing in the shadows, that beings feared. And now, another dark something sought to move in on that which was his. He would brook no such intrusions. While his hunger could normally be sauted by such weak things, that chance to tasete another of the dark, was simply too delicious a thought. The darkness swelled even more as it found that, which had called it to the surface.
It exploded from a darkneded corner of a room. Another of the human mutants was in side, but that was nothing. The OTHER was here. The Darkness roared forth, in its challenge to the other darkness. For it had a weapon, it knew the other could not abide. It would once again, taste the wonderful darkness of another.
NightFall, was barely aware of his surroundings when they finally uncloaked from the darkness. His cloak flared around him, as if moving to engulf the entire room, if not the mansion. He could feel, what could only be described an intense longing, or perhaps, even something deeper. A hunger, which now seemed to drive him. He was aware that for some reason, part of himself seemed to draw Lazer even closer to him, wrapping her gently but tightly, so that none of her light showed. He let his anger seep away. To be angry would give away his position. And right now, he wanted nothing more than to catch what had dared touch him. So all emotions he let drain away, till nothing but the darkness remain. He felt Lazer shiver slightly, but continued to let his emotions drain from him. Right now, he NEEDED to be the darkness. To be the dispair one felt in the gloom of the darkness. The Hunter. To seek out with a coldness born of the dark. The darkness roared to be set free, giving extra energy to NightFall as he moved. As they appeared within the room, NightFall made no sound, but moved to attack.

RE: The Xavier Institute for Higher Learning: Path of Heroes
Shifter - Citadel Lounge
Back inside the Citadel Lounge, things had gotten livelier, and Shifter was enjoying himself. He could hear many others now, as they watchd him and Greenie arm wrestle. They were busy hootin' and hollerin' a storm, while they watched the two of them. Thats right. He wansnt no tiny pushover, like them others. He was hear to make a point., even if the green gal was in the mighty strong department. He might not be like them, but he knew one thing well. How to grappel, and fight. He had done it all of his life. And now, he was finally getting the attention he deserved.
"How's it going darlin? I aint squeezing too hard, am I?" Shifter asked, taunting Esmeralda. Esmeralda shot him a look that would have made the grim reaper back off. The anger that boiled behind those green eyes was raw and undisguised.
"I don't know how you've managed to last this long baby boy, but I'm going to break-off your arm and keep it as a souvenir."
Esmeralda's grunted back her reply. 'Ohh..the gal's ticked.' Esmeralda's got angrier and more determined.
"....Then we can all call you stubby-tubby."
she said, finishing her sentence with a hiss as her arm bulged mightily now that a surge of hidden strength coursed through her.
Shifter wanted to chuckle, but kept his face straight, even as he heard the metal table groaned and squealed loudly in response to the sudden added pressure per square inch, and still, Shifter's arm remained in the same position and did not move. He adjusted his density once again, and now, the table began to shake with mini-quakes from the stress. Onlookers 'oooohed' as cracks began to suddenly appear. Esmeralda gritted her teeth as she poured on the pressure.
"You're going down!"
she promised hotly, just as a loud pinging sound was heard from the metal stable, which began to surrender under the titanic stress it was under. Shifter leaned in close, as the two struggled, the arms strained under the tremendious pressure. 'Woah. This green gal sure is strong. But, she aint got the skills I got..' he thought to himself. Suddenly, a plan came to his mind. It would be a killer, but it would be worth it. With that thought in mind, Shifter looked up into Esmeralda's eyes, which wasnt difficult, as they were a mere inches away from his own.
"Yer beautiful when yer angry, baby. You can call me anything you want..." Shifter stated, as he suddenly leaned in and kissed Esmeralda full on the lips, meanwhile, bringing her arm down on the table. Just as her arm came down however, the table, no longer being able to stand the strain, gave way.
What happened next, was an explosion of motion, as Shifter made good his escape. He knew, after THAT little trick, that if she was anry with him before, she was going to be furious now. And if one thing he knew about females, was to get out of the way of the crazy ones. He had one anyway, and the necklace would be his. After all, she didnt mention no other rules in this little contest. And what he did, would not break the rules in any other contest.
She would see that too after she calmed down. IF she calmed down. But still, it was worth every second.

RE: The Xavier Institute for Higher Learning: Path of Heroes
IC: Thera
She was floating in the Dreamscape...alone. She was all alone. She felt...empty. She was so used to the voices, the power.
You will always have the power, Thera. That is now a part of you. You do not need them you keep it or build it or strengthen it. You only need yourself.
Jean Grey's voice floated through the Dreamscape.
But stop ignoring me. You have rested for long enough. Do you feel the power crackling inside you? Do you feel the burning under your skin? Use it.
Thera looked at her hands. There was fire. Fire. She closed her eyes and let herself drift from the Dreamscape.
When she opened her eyes, she saw white.
Is this...is this the white-hot room?
No, silly. It is the infirmary at the Mansion. The white-hot room won't come until later. Now, go.
Jean's voice commanded.
"Yes ma'am," she mumbled, sitting up. She was alone. Where was Hermes? Why wasn't he here with her? She rubbed her eyes, feeling the heat building inside her. Her confusion and passion and hurt fueled the fire.
She looked around. She could sense a sort of chaos taking place nearby. She carefully slid herself off the table, mentally changing into comfortable clothes. She shifted her eyes to the door and it opened easily. "What is going on here?" she asked the small group in the infirmary.

Aurora and Blink
Infermary, Xavier Mansion
Blink watched as John and Sam talked to each other. The fires had been dampered, and John seemed to have everything in control. Sam was weeping into Johns arms now, and Blink decided that he should tactfully withdraw, to head back towards the main area. Aurora had her hands full, and she would probably welcome the help. He quietly dimed the lights slightly, and gave them some privacy.
Blink jogged down the hall, to catch up with Aurora, as she was busy dealing with the three knew injuries that had come in. The one known as
Greg seemed to be waking up now. His eyes were a strange color, and she noticed that he seemed to be talking to himself. Aurora saw him grab at some wires and she frowned, even as he grimiced.
Blink came into the room, and was walking towards Aurora, grining. "You need a..." Blink stopped chatting, as Greg suddenly transformed into Ogre.
Blink's expression went hard, even as Aurora moved to the other students back. "Let him go." Blink said steadly. "Professor N'dare is busy. Soemthing is going on, and we're all on lockdown. So why dont you let Wei Chen go."
Aurora prepared to move on a moments notice, as Blink and Ogre talked to each other. Her hand had already activated a silent alarm. Just then, another door within the Infirmary slid open, and someone stepped out.
Thera.
"What is going on here?"
Thera asked the small group in the infirmary.

Karra
Corridor, Restricted Area, Infirmary, Xavier Mansion
Karra, who had succesfully captured Frostbite in a force-field of her own, and have managed to quickly subdue him. Frostbite succumbed to the atmospheric preassure karra had created inside the bubble. Within moments, Frostbite lay unconcious inside Karra's force bubble and returned to his human form, but not before a dark guttural scream escaped from him. Karra, even thought she was not fighting Frostbite, but the thing that possessed him, almost made her want to smile, even if the thought was a bit...unlike her.
Karra heard a strange sound then. A very high pitch whistle. Karra scanned the area, looking for a next target. Iori seemed to be handling things with the folks near him. She scanned the area with her other sight. She had seen the other, talking to what looked like nobody. And for a moment, she thought she saw something. So she flew overhead, looking for the next hotspot to cool down. She was not in the mood to brook any more attacks on the school.
N'dare meanwhile, used the opportunity to bend down, and touch the water/ice that had been left behind. And then he charged it. As he concentrated, lightining coursed from his fingertips, down into the ice and water mix. Those, who were still fighting, or those entities not protected, were going to be in for a rude shock. It should be enough to make what ever was taking control of the students, a major headache. He then quickly moved, staying within the field that hid him. As he did, his bracelet began to vibrate. Something was going on within the main Infirmary. Hopefully Blink, Aurora and Jocasta could keep things under control until he could return.

Greyjedi, anyone else
Smoke.
She looked out a window, as the thick plumes of smoke rose out over the city. It was grey, as grey as the day had started. News and rumors of the impending mutant registraction act, had made it way through the official channels. She was translanting documents like mad lately, and her bank account was very comfortable.
She looked back out over the grey skyline. Hunting had become difficult. And she had not gone aware of new eyes and ears within her domain. They were seeking out others who lived within the area where she worked. It was no longer convient to work from her old office. But, it was but a small inconcience. She had many offices from which she could work from. It was easy, to forward things, so that her clients did not know she had moved.
She turned, and looked at herself in a mirror. Her hair was pulled up into a smart hairdo, her tailored suit, with a proper him, of the sleekist office colors. A pair of glasses, not necessary, but for some reason, people seemed to think it completed the image of an office professional, sat upon her face. A briefcase, sat on the table next to her. She had already mailed some other things. Only one other thing she carried with her, but that item was not easily found.
Time to go. She had already given notice that her office would be used by another during her absence. The place was sterile. Nothing there that would point towards its pervious occupant. She looked down at her map, as she scopped up her briefcase. She already had her next place set up and ready for opperations. And it was closer to where she wished to be. As she stepped out to the waiting car, she look out into the grey clouds once more. A change of scenery would be nice. Besides, the prey was getting pretty weak here.
It was time for a taste of new blood.
The silver sedan pulled off and speed away.

Appearance: Emke usually wears jeans, fashionable trousers or skirts with blouses or t-shirts.
Other Special Features: Like most Belgians, Emke is fluent in both Dutch and French and speaks some German. She studied English for seven years in grammar school though she rarely has a chance to use it and speaks with a noticeable accent.
Personality: Emke is a particularly amiable person, though soft spoken. After years of ballet she is disciplined and remarkably patient, making her a beloved teacher. Obviously, she loves dancing, though she has a fondness for music as well. Though she is well read, Emke appears dense compared to her frighteningly intelligent husband, Mads.
Weapons: Disgustingly decadent
pan au chocolat
, a family specialty.
History/Background: Emke was born in Mons to Edmund and Gisele (Roque) Descoteaux. During the later months of pregnancy her mother contracted pneumonia and Emke was born nearly a month and a half early; shortly after Emke’s birth Gisele died, leaving Edmund to raise Emke alone. Emke grew up in a small apartment above her father’s bakery, attended school, and took ballet lessons. At 12 Emke earned a scholarship to study with the Royal Ballet of Flanders in Antwerp. Edmund remained in Mons to earn money for the rest of the tuition, and Emke moved in with a local family sponsoring several other young girls from distant towns who were to study with Royal Ballet of Flanders. It was here that Emke discovered her abilities. With 13 other girls in the house it was easy for Emke to practice vaporizing without being noticed. Once Emke had become more familiar with her abilities she began visiting her father whenever possible. After six years of studying with the Royal Ballet of Flanders, Emke decided against becoming a professional ballerina. So she moved to Brussels to study at the University. Emke earned a degree in various forms of dance and began teaching ballet to young girls in a nearby studio. She and Mads live in a comfortable apartment in Brussels and both remain close to Edmund.

Marty smiled as he was accepted and given allowance to go after Abominus.
I have been given, perhaps, the toughest assignment of my life. I better not mess this one up.
After a moment of thinking, Marty decided to stay where he was for just a few moments longer, typing up one last email message to the MCU.
"To begin my hunt, can you give me any leads on the latest known whereabouts of the mutant? Or shall I proceed on my own?"
Clicking 'Send', Marty waited for the response. After it...it would be time for the Hunt once again.
He felt a little bad, having accepted a bounty already again and not giving any more time to Allie, but he felt this was one he needed to leap at. $500,000 wasn't something to ignore.

IC JACK "HAWK" WARNER
&
ELANA WARNER:
Mansion Grounds...
Jack slowly made his way towards Alice, pain coursing through his body. Propping himself against a nearby tree, he watched, anticipating a battle between Sage's armored psi-form and whoever it was who was possessing Alice.
But, it did not happen.
Stupefied, Jack watched as the two began to converse. Pushing himself off the tree, the pain in his body overwhelming, he tried to move closer.
He barely managed to gasp as he fell to the ground, pain surging like a tidal wave over his being. As the pain ever so slowly began to subside, he got onto all fours. He had been weakening over time since he had gotten his injuries, and because of this, his arms gave out under him, sending him back to the ground.
Jack gritted his teeth as he tried to raise himself again, pain contorting his entire body. Somehow, he managed to get over to a small tree, and sat himself at the bottom of the trunk. He closed his eyes, holding back the gallons of tears that were fighting their way out.
Jack...
Jack opened his eyes, to see a familiar form in front of him. It was Tetsuo, his Tetsu, his Alice. However, something was wrong. She was on her knees, about six or seven feet from Jack. Her hands were covered with blood - her blood. Blood covered most of her form. The blood dripped profusely from her body, almost like tears. "Jack... I need you..." Alice began to cough violently, blood spewing from her mouth. "Jack... Jack, help me..."
Jack got on his hands and knees (which was pain-wracking enough - he couldn't even consider walking at this point), and crawled towards Alice. She cried, more and more as Jack got closer. Her blood began to drip. Faster... faster... faster... Tears fell down Jack's cheeks in torrents. He had to save her, no matter what condition he was in.
He was right in front of Alice. The blood cascaded down her form as she cried, beckoning for Jack to save her. Jack leaned out to hold her, and -
Passed right through her, landing hard on the ground. He sat there for who knows how long, staring off into the distance. Eventually he looked up to see Alice - or, whoever was possessing her - sneering down at him.
"Go back to hell, you -" Jack was cut off as coughs shook Jack's body, setting his ribs on fire.
As the coughs subsided, Jack began to cry. Whatever had happened, no matter what - it seemed that Alice was lost. But Jack would figure out a way to save his friend. He had to...
The sound of running footsteps approached behind him.
Elana, breathless, knelt down beside him. She had asked Professor N'Dare to be ready for Jack, whom she would take there herself. Hopefully, with how things were inside, the professor would have enough time to set something up.
Elana looked over her brother. She remembered when she first saw him, standing over the bodies of her parents. She had first thought that he had killed them, but after an long period of squabbling and explanations, she followed her brother in an adventure through central parks, sewers, and newfound mutancy.
Pain surged through her body as her musculature became larger, giving her the ability to carry her brother. Looking towards the group of people not too far away, she saw Alice - or, someone who looked like Alice. She sneered at Elana, and that look sent a shiver down the young woman's spine.
She'd have to figure all of this out later - first, she had to get her brother to the Infirmary.
Jack was too weak to do much of anything at this point. The pain was unbearable. Each step Elana took intensified his pain.
"No... I've... got to stay...." Jack kept muttering this over and over as Elana carried him into the building.
Inside the Mansion...
Pandemonium had overtaken the building. Shouts and screams echoed down the halls as students ran frantically here and there. Fights had broken out, and the sounds of breaking objects filled the building. Muscling her way through the students, she finally made it to the Infirmary.
Infirmary...
Laying Jack down on the table that had been set up for him, the medbots set to work treating his wounds. Elana stood by, watching the robots work. They worked with such speed and precision that Elana was surprised, to say the least.
After about ten minutes, the bulk of the medbots' work had been completed. They only had to finish cleaning out the shards of glass in his arm, and the medbots would be finished.
Elana pulled over a stool, and sat down next to Jack. Jack had now regained a small bit of strength. He was staring at the ceiling, a million thoughts running through his mind. As the last shards of glass were being extracted from Jack's arm, he spoke to Elana, barely audible.
"Y'know... sometimes I've wondered if it was a mistake bringing you here."
Elana leaned forward a bit, so as to better hear her brother, who was still staring upwards.
"When I saw you walking into the house... I didn't know what to do. I couldn't just leave you, but part of me wanted to. I didn't want some kid trailing behind me."
Elana placed her hand in Jack's, which had been heavily bandaged. "But you didn't, Jack."
"Does that matter? I wanted to leave you there. And if I'd left you, who knows what would've happened to you." Jack paused, his gaze still fixed on the ceiling. "I wanted it just to be me and Alice... just the two of us... and now she's gone."
"But you took me," Elana said, trying to keep him from dwelling on Alice. "Why?"
Jack pondered this. "You're family. I didn't really have a reason when I did it. I just... did it."
"And that's what matters," she said, turning Jack's head to face her. "Don't worry about what could've been. No matter what you think, you're the best there is."
For the first time in days, Jack smiled.

RE: The Xavier Institute for Higher Learning: Path of Heroes
Emke and Mads Haumann
Brussels, Belgium
Emke waved as the last of her students left the small dance studio on the second floor of a centuries old row house near midtown. She quickly threw on a pair of jeans and puffy vest over her leggings leotard and changed her ballet slippers for a pair of moccasins Mads had brought her from a trip to Morocco. Emke locked the door and dashed to the local market for dinner stuffs. After purchasing bread, olives, berries and cream she reluctantly entered the boucherais cheval.
Work had been difficult for Mads lately, so she was preparing his favorite meal, capraccio. She had eaten horse meat before and enjoyed it- until her father told her what she was eating. After the butcher handed her the wrapped meat, she grabbed a bottle of Sugarloaf from a near by shelf. Emke didn’t know the first thing about choosing wine for a meal, but she knew if she would be eating horse she would need wine and quite a bit of it. She paid the man behind the counter and continued on her way home.
When she reached the door of their third story apartment, Emke dug through her bag for her keys. After struggling one handed for a few minutes she set the groceries on the floor and looked through her bag- still no keys. Emke looked up and down the corridor before dismembering her particles and with a gentle whoosh slipped under the door. From the inside she opened the door, picked up the groceries, and put them on the kitchen counter next to her forgotten keys. Emke quickly set the table then poured herself a glass of wine before preparing dinner.
A few minutes later, Emke set a plate of bread and butter on the table next the platter of thinly sliced meat and olives drizzled with olive oil on the table. Just then, a disheveled Mads walked through the door. Emke greeted him with a kiss, “
Bonsoir, ma vie
!”
“Emke,” Mads said playing with her soft curls. “We need to talk.” He should be excited about his news, but he couldn’t help but feel guilty.
“What about dinner.” Emke motioned to the table. “I made
capracio di cavalo
.”
“Oh.” Mads smiled, “Well, the meat’s raw. I’m sure it will be fine for a few minutes.” He sat down on the couch, took off his coat and tie, and loosened his shirt collar. Make watched him as she perched on the coffee table across from him. Mads ran his hands through his short hair, before looking Emke in the eyes. “I’ve been offered a promotion.”
“Is that all?” Emke sighed in relief, “I thought something horrible had happened!”
“The job is as a translator for the United Nations in New York City,” Mads paused. Emke seemed genuinely shocked. She opened her mouth as if to speak then shut it. Mads was beginning to wish he had never considered taking the position. He was used to bouncing from place to place. The past five years in Brussels were the longest he had ever been in one place, and before Mozambique he had never lived in one area for more than a few months. Emke had spent her whole life in Belgium, sure she had moved between cities but she was never more than an hour away from her father. Mads could not believe he was asking this of her. “We don’t have to do this. I am sorry I even worried you.”
“No.” Emke grabbed Mads hands, “This is a perfect opportunity for you! You are too gifted to let this go by. I know I will find a job easily as a dance teacher- especially with the accent.” Mads laughed in spite of himself. “It will be hard without my father so close, but we can talk on the phone. Maybe we could come back at Christmas.”
“We will go to Mons every Christmas.” Mads promised, “Thank you so much, Emke.”
“We are married. We are supposed to support each other.” Emke kissed Mads on the forehead, “Now hurry up before Willie Nelson tries to free your dinner.”
