“Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.” – Murphy’s Law

Murphy’s Law is an RP based primarily on the Jurassic Park novels, but also drawing on the films. It takes place during the events of the first novel/film, but in a different location: Isla Sorna, also known as Site B.

The Plot
It is August, 1989, and International Genetics Technologies, Inc. is set to open its newest venture, a multi-billion dollar zoo/wildlife preserve called Jurassic Park. Spanning the island of Isla Sorna, off the coast of Costa Rica, Jurassic Park will showcase the culmination of years of meticulous scientific study by InGen’s top engineers and geneticists. InGen scientists have discovered a means of extracting the blood of dinosaurs from mosquitos and similar insects preserved in amber. Using the latest in genetics technology to manipulate the DNA within, CEO John Hammond’s dream has become a reality, and living breathing dinosaurs now once again walk the Earth. They will be shared with the world.

That is, if Jurassic Park ever opens.

A series of problems with the park and on the job accidents, not to mention a number of incidents involving the park’s animals, have caused many of the project’s considerable Japanese investors to consider pulling out. To ease their fears, John Hammond has assembled a team of outside experts to assess the park: a paleontologist, a paleobotanist, a mathematician, a lawyer, and Hammond’s own two grandchildren. He plans to parade them around the facilities, showcasing the marvels his company has created, including, for example, the technilogically advanced hatchery, where the parks dinosaurs are created.

At least, that’s what park visitors and investors are told. The real nitty gritty, the research and development, the majority of the breeding and testing takes place on another island, InGen’s “factory floor,” Isla Sorna, known as Site B. Here, most of the actual production, research, development, and testing happen, an island devoted less to wonder and awe than to scientific study.

InGen is not the only company with plans in motion. A major competitor, Biosyn Corporation, has launched a double pronged effort of corporate espionage. Seeking InGen’s heavily guarded secrets, Biosyn has simultaneously dispatched two missions to steal dinosaur embryos and other specimens from both of InGen’s Costa Rican facilities. As a deadly hurricane approaches the region and Biosyn’s inside man at Jurassic Park, Dennis Nedry, prepares to steal embryos from Isla Nublar, a team of Biosyn operatives and mercenaries in the company’s employ approaches Isla Sorna…

Characters
I think RPs are more fun when people put thought into their characters, as it helps with the storytelling and makes things more vivid. That being said, have fun with them. As we’re dealing with a story that will have action, but is still about corporate espionage, not everyone has to be a scientist, a mercenary, or an animal specialist; lawyers, accountants, computer technicians, consultants, electricians, and anything else you can think of would all be welcomed along for the ride as well. My only request is that you know something about what your character does, or are willing to put in some research. Please don’t, for example, sign up as a paleontologist if you don’t know jack about dinosaurs or paleontology and aren’t willing to make a trip or two to Wikipedia!

A basic character sheet is as follow, but feel free to use whatever format you’d like:

Name:
Age:
Gender:
Appearance:
Allegiance:
Skills:
Bio:

All character sheets should be PMd to me (The GM) for approval.

The Dinosaurs
The following is a list of the dinosaur species living on Isla Sorna. The list is taken from the novels, but supplemented with a few from the films or, in one case, my own interest.

• Apatosaurus
• Baryonyx
• Cearadactylus
• Callovosaurus
• Camarasaurus
• Carnotaurus
• Dilophosaurus

• Procompsognathus
• Pteranodon
• Stegosaurus
• Styracosaurus
• Therizinosaurus
• Triceratops
• Tyrannosaurus
• Velociraptor

This list should be adhered to unless otherwise notified.

The Rules
Play fair, no God-modding, stick to the TOS…all the usual, common sense stuff.

I hope to have fun, here. Any questions, ask away! Happy RPing!

OOC: Just a note, I'd like to keep characters human, mostly, in order to A) make sure we have enough people on the island and B) to keep people from both God-modding and from anthropomorphosing the animals.

Great two profiles, guys. I'm still trying to decide on one for myself. Tell your friends! lol

Any questions? Comments? Requests?

Kid Tested, GM Approved!

Name: Dr. Akio Fujikawa
Age: 33
Gender: Male
Appearance:
--Eyes: Brown
-- Build: Thin
--Hair: Black
--Height: 5’8”
Allegiance: BioSyn
Skills: Marine Biology, specializing in fish and aquatic reptiles
Bio: The sea has always been in the blood of the Fujikawa family and brothers Shinichi and Akio Fujikawa. Raised in the metropolitan Tokyo area, their father was captain of fishing boat for a local firm, spending much of his time in the nation’s outer islands. Both brothers spent much of their time by the bay and enjoyed spending time in and under the water, observing the vibrant sea life around them.

As they grew, the boys goals grew apart, but both remained connected to the sea. Shinichi would become a fisherman, serving under his father, while Akio would attend the University of Tokyo, studying Marine Biology specializing in the study of fish and marine reptiles. Early on in his career he would work at the university’s Ocean Research Institute until he was recruited by BioSyn Industries to help develop a new breed of Pale Trout for the Department of Fish and Game of Idaho.

Early in 1989, Akio received a report from home that his brother’s fishing trawler had been attacked and sunk off Izu Ôshima. His brother and father were both killed in the accident, along with most of the crew, but no bodies were ever found. Examination of the ship wreckages revealed large tooth marks in the hulls and the damage caused almost made it look like the ship had been pulled apart. Dr. Fujikawa examined the eye witness reports of those who managed to survive, but was as equally puzzled as the government officials investigating the case. By the way they described it, the creature sounded as if it were some kind of Pliosaurus species and a rather large one at that, perhaps a Kronosaurus or Liopleurodon. But how could that be true? Both species had been extinct for Millennia and neither was known to have swam in the waters around Japan. Shortly thereafter, Lewis Dodgson approached Fujikawa about his involvement in a special project for the corporation in Costa Rica… something that might help him find the answers he needs to discover the truth behind his family’s death.

Now, Akio finds his feelings a bittersweet mix, his childhood love mixed with the grief that somewhere out there was something that claimed the lives of those closest to him.

Akio Fujikawa’s personality is driven and he is passionate about his work. He has an amiable and friendly demeanor and is not combative. From spending many late hours on his work both in college and professionally, he has become and coffee and cappuccino addict.

Alias: Jimmy Hal
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Appearance: http://www.studentsoftheworld.info/sites/country/img/8167_character.gif
Allegiance: Biosyn
Skills: Detective. He has great attention and observation skills. Very smart.
Weapons: 9MM, Dual .44 Magnum Revolvers.
Bio: Jimmy is a prodigy. He developed his detective skills while being in a Military Academy School. He excelled in all of his classes, but seemed to have taken a liking observation tests and challenges. After graduating early, because of his grades and his father's influence on the school, Jimmy opened his own small detective service when he was 16 and started to serve his community.

After 5 years of solving major cases dealing with murder, fraud, infidelity, and many other types, he attracted the attention of major organizations. One such was BioSyn. They approached him with the idea of working for them, which he rejected at first, but knowing that every man has a price, they raised the gambit by offering him 50 million dollars.

No doubt, Jimmy jumped for the opportunity to get the money, but he had to work his way up to the opponent they wanted him to take on.

From my conversations with our good GM, he will be using at least one of the novel/movie characters, but I don't believe they'll be featured majorly. There may be cameos but the majority of the action in the game will be taking place on Isla Sorna, Site B.

If I'm off-base on any of this Matt, feel free to correct me.

Opening Post

Chapter 1

"The temporary problems that have arisen in the past have been ironed out, and the appropriate measures taken to assure they do not rise again. Mistakes have been made, and for that we are regretful, but we can assure you these setbacks are no more serious than one would expect to encounter in an undertaking such as this. InGen is moving forward with the project. Jurassic Park is on schedule and running smoothly, and we're very excited to share our wondrous discoveries with the young and young at heart. And, of course, to share their money with all of you."
- Statements made by Peter Ludlow, January 1989 InGen shareholders meeting

IC: John Arnold, InGen cargo helicopter, en route to Site B

Security issues on Site B were a pain in the ass. Not because they were serious. Quite the opposite: no one knew about Site B, and no one cared, so any problem with security probably wasn’t much of a problem at all. It seemed something had breached. Chances are it was nothing, or maybe it was a fallen tree. Anyhow, there was a camera out, and they had called John Arnold to deal with it. If it was serious, he’d have to call over his colleague, Irwin Uberstein, to take care of it. It probably wasn’t serious.

Arnold turned to the pilot. “Mind if I smoke?” he asked. The pilot shrugged. Arnold took that as a yes. He lit up, took a puff, and watched as the smoke trailed out the side of the chopper over the blue-green water. Remembering himself, he turned around to look at the man sitting behind him, a scientist by the name of Galen Snyder. He was a geologist that had been a major help to InGen’s digs all around the world. He sat now twirling a piece of amber in his fingers. Snyder had asked Hammond just what exactly all these tons of million year old tree sap were being used for and Hammond, in true John Hammond shock-and-childlike-wonder style, had told him to follow the latest shipment and find out for himself. Arnold didn’t understand that. He would have just told the man.

He patted Snyder on the leg to get his attention, then held up his cigarette. “You mind?”

TAG: Zedd-Vega

IC: Ed James, Isla Sorna jungle

Five days in this jungle, and they hadn’t found out much. James Halak said it was because he preferred to work alone. Ed figured that was a load of crap. Anyway, he wasn’t really working with Halak so much as babysitting him for Dodgson. He had to hand it to the guy, though: he was the one who figured out there was a Site B at all. He was more or less responsible for everything they did know so far: what security looked like, what the buildings were for, crew shifts, etcetera. Apparently there was something called “DX,” but they couldn’t figure out exactly what that was, yet. Most of the work they had done was done before they even got here. Once they got to Isla Sorna, they’d been caught at a standstill.

So maybe it was outside of Halak’s experience. Oh well.

Biosyn HQ in New York was getting nervous, but one of the few things Halak and James managed to agree on was that there may not be much more they were even able to find out, and there was no reason for the mercs to be uneasy. There was nothing here but scientists, technicians, a game warden or two…there were the animals, but they were in cages, and the mercs had the best in animal control equipment. No match for soldiers of fortune. They could take this whole island. Piece of cake.

Ed sat down in their camp and opened up a can of beans. He hoped the Go order would come soon. He and Halak would work out how to get the security down, the mercs would arrive, and Ed wouldn’t be stuck in a jungle alone with this guy anymore.

TAG: BluBeast1237

IC: Tim Cooper, Puerto Quepos, Costa Rica

Tim Cooper reclined in his wicker seat and took a sip of his Piña Colada, relishing the feeling of the breeze and the sound of the surf. Julius Hayde had made fun of his choice of drink and resolutely ordered a beer, but Cooper didn’t care. He was in the tropics, and he was damn well going to act like it until they got sent out to Isla Sorna to steal some technology and specimens of some sort of animal. As if to prove his point, he was wearing a floral Hawaiian shirt. He put his drink back on the table and slipped the pineapple slice out past the little umbrella and took a big bite. This sort of job – and the sort of pay Biosyn was offering – sure beat what most of his friends were doing right now, sitting out in the desert trying to make sure Iran didn’t invade Iraq. Or maybe they were making sure Iraq didn’t invade Iran. It all sounded the same, and it sure as hell wasn’t as nice as sitting here with a tropical drink on the beach.

Hayde was a rough-hewn man who seemed to take himself a little more seriously than Cooper did. He was also a tad more ruthless, more willing to turn a blind eye to exactly who was paying him, and for what. He wasn’t being talkative now, and Cooper couldn’t decide if it was just Hayde’s mood, or if he was always this way.

Taking another sip, Cooper noticed a man approaching them. He was looked to be of Asian descent, and seemed to have business on his mind. Cooper pointed at the man with his chin and said, “I think this one’s with us.”

TAG: Black-Pearl, R_Zion

IC: Dennis Nedry, Jurassic Park Command Center, Isla Nublar

“I’m telling you, a power failure could be real bad for this place, Uberstein.”

Dennis Nedry spun in his chair, chewing on a Snickers bar. Erwin Uberstein sat at his desk at the opposite side of the room, surveying security footage and watching numbers climb his computer screen. The wonder of the place, the danger, had long since passed for both men. Now it was all routine, and running beautifully. And because of that, Nedry was bored. He didn’t know what to do with his day except periodically raid vending machines and play Prince of Persia. He used to play SimCity but, after a while, it was just too much like what he did in real life: micromanagement, tweaking, keeping things running optimally with the fewest people complaining. The job used to be a thrill, back in the beginning, years ago when he and Uberstein had collaborated on putting all these systems in place. In the past, once things were set up, Dennis Nedry would pick up and go to the next employer looking for a hacker. Not these days. At least back then he had the option of taking a higher paying job, but that was freelance work. You didn’t get much higher on the food chain than working for this sort of company. Still, there were always ways to make more money, always methods for making sure you were…appreciated. He idly wondered how much Uberstein made.

In between mouthfuls of chocolate and caramel, Nedry was leaving brown fingerprints on his computer keys, programming himself a new screensaver. Uberstein had been more or less ignoring him so far. Nedry wasn’t sure Uberstein liked him. He didn’t think many people liked him, really. He knew Arnold, the Chief Engineer, didn’t like him. He wasn’t sure if Old Man Hammond liked him or just needed him. Henry Wu stayed away. The only person that seemed to show him any sort of kindness was AJ, and that was probably more because she was a pretty young idealist who pitied him. He was used to that kind of attention. Still, he took advantage of it, where he could. He didn’t care that Uberstein was ignoring him, now. In fact, it was a good thing. He’d only said it to make sure he was right.

Bored, Nedry took a sip of his Coke and stood up, stretching and yawning. He activated his new screensaver - a simple animation of Uberstein getting eaten by a T-Rex – and began to walk towards the hatchery. It was fun to play with the little ones. The hallway was long and smelled of cleaning products, and it was filled by the hum of the freezer. One whole room, kept frigid, right down the hall, chock full of embryos, the tiny, microscopic beginnings of life, frozen, kept waiting. Nedry’s fingertips passed slowly over the cold metal door lingering on the handle. Removing his hand as if burned, he continued his walk to the hatchery. He’d knock on the door when he arrived, and hope AJ let him in. She was a nice girl, and good at her job. Being one of Hammond’s granddaughters didn’t hurt.

When Biosyn made its own Jurassic Park, Nedry was sure they’d hire her.

TAG: Red_Winter, MoonlightsAngel

IC: Dr. Martin DeAngelis, DVM, Site B High Security Enclosure, Isla Sorna

The sun beat down on Dr. DeAngelis’ brow like a fist. No breeze, today, and very little humidity. His shirt was drenched below the armpits and down his back. He fumbled in his pocket for a handkerchief and, hand shaking, he patted his glistening forehead with it. Next to him was another of Site B’s employees, Demetrius Greene. Like his counterpart on the Nublar facility, a man named Muldoon, Greene had spent much of his life in Africa, had learned to hunt, learned to track, learned to deal with the behavior of big game, learned the right weapons for the right kind of critter. Like Muldoon, Greene had been hired as Game Warden/Wildlife Management. Both men were involved in the care of the installation’s animals. Sometimes that meant taking action. He dabbed his forehead, again. Greene loaded a dart into his capture gun, just in case. Sometimes it was a shame Hammond had forbidden killing any of these animals.

They were standing on a platform near the top of the sort of big, square, concrete enclosures the InGen facilities used to hold the most dangerous creatures, simply looking in. The loading truck had stayed behind with its trailer backed into an opening in the wall, in anticipation of hauling off a corpse. The driver had gotten out of the truck to wait far away and smoke a cigarette. His behavior was understandable; his cargo had nearly flipped the truck twice just on the short ride here.

The Dilophosaurus wetherelli within the enclosure did not look well at all, and had been deteriorating for some time. She was far too thin, as she had been off her food for weeks, and her skin, usually a bright yellow color with black leopard spots, had dulled. Even the crimson hue of her dual crests, sitting atop her tapering head, had gone brownish. Her hide was covered in scabs where she’d bitten herself or scratched herself with her talons, and patches of skin were gone where she’d rubbed her skin raw, like she was doing right now grinding her right haunch against the enclosure’s wall. A bright red new wound appeared on her right shoulder that wasn’t there when they’d loaded her into the truck; presumably she’s incurred that industry ramming the sides of the trailer. Satisfied that her itch was scratched, she staggered to the center of the enclosure with an odd, hopping gate, her eyes fogged over and her jaw leaking saliva, and began urinating, breathing heavy. They’d had to remove this individual from the dilo paddock when it became clear she was far too sick for their company. It was standard procedure whenever this sickness appeared in the carnivores. None of the other dilos missed her, as she’d become increasingly unsociable since her symptoms first appeared. Now she looked up at the two men watching her, and let loose an odd, high-pitched imitation of the dilophosaurs’ hooting call. Her arm spasmed.

DeAngelis turned to Greene with a sigh. “Well,” he said, “what now?” He bit his lower lip. DX was spreading like wildfire.
