Earth in flames: The Posleen War
Allen Telescope Array, Hat Creek Radio Observatory, California
September 2007
It was the end of the day when the white noise stopped.
Tony Markstrom, Intern from UC Berkeley, was ready to leave his post and go home when the signal that changed the world was received.
Whatever it was it was big. The monitors emitted a continuous babbling tone of information without preamble, all of the computer monitors started going crazy and Markstrom nearly
fell out of his chair.
It was with shaking hands that he keyed in the instructions to the computers to begin the standard procedures of what to do if contact was made.
He barely noticed the door bursting open behind him, and the senior technicians rushing in.
He knew, at that moment, even though he’d done nothing great, he’d entered history.
United Nations Building. Security Council Room.
November 2007
“I have news.” Said the delegate from the United States.
“Two months ago, a SETI installation received a Signal from extra-terrestrial intelligences. In the signal were charts and diagrams of technologies and instructions on how to build them. There was also a message. A message from the alien intelligences.
“And the message isn’t good.”

Welcome to the Posleen War RPG! This RPG is an adaptation of John Ringo’s “Legacy of the Aldenata”series. This RPG will deviate from the book in some ways, but the basic premise will be the same: Alien Invasion.
The RPG will encompass a period of buildup, Invasion, and aftermath. It will be of a military and political bend. Some economics as well will play in. Therefore, players should create characters in the Military or High Political positions. However, since this is a global Invasion, it is recommended that secondary characters be civilians.
When we begin, Characters will have to make decisions to prepare earth for the invasion. Tough and difficult decisions will have to be made on technologies developed and strategies adopted. I encourage the players to debate and form strategies. Unlike some of my Other RPG's this will be very player driven, and I intend to adopt a much more hands-off approach.
If you wish to join, PM me a Standard Character Sheet. Over the next few days I will post a list of Alien Technologies that are available to the governments of the world, as well as that of the enemy.
Rules:
1. Obey the Terms of service
2. The GM’s word is final, but since I am human, I may make mistakes. If you have a problem, please take it up with me in private and I will attempt to address your grievance.
3. Be realistic and descriptive, especially if your character is making decisions regarding tactics or strategy.
4. The weapons and technology are feasible (though distantly). I advise players to do a few minutes research. Characters can develop new technologies, and I encourage this.
5. Original characters only. I will consider crossovers, PM me in private.

RE: Earth in flames: The Posleen War
OOC: Decoded from the first transmission from the "Galactics", this document is circulating amongst the Defense Ministries of the permanent memebrs of the UN Security council. It details the enemy. My next post will include descriptions of the technology schematics in the same transmission from the Galactics.
TOP SECRET
Eyes Only
US Military Intelligence brief: The Posleen
Posleen Technology:
The Posleen are theorized to be an ‘Uplifted’ species. That is, they did not develop their technology on their own. The Posleen know how to operate their machines and technology, but are unable to duplicate it unaided. Nor can they improve or enhance existing technology.
All Posleen technology is fabricated in automated factories that are self-sustaining. Posleen Star Ships contain the essential machines to begin construction of said factories. The technology they have acquired allows them access to quantum tunneling for interstellar travel, and weapons and sensors far beyond the current generation of earth.
Posleen Weapons:
Ground Forces:
Posleen companies carry a mixed amount of light and heavy weapons. The prevalence of either depends largely upon the economic resources and prestige of their respective God King, but even the most basic platoon will have at least 8 Hyper Velocity Rocket Launchers.
If a relatively new, poor, and undistinguished platoon, it will be heavy on Flechette Shotguns and 1mm rail guns. If it is an established company, it will carry mostly heavier weapons such as the 3mm rail gun and plasma weapons. All Posleen carry a monomolecular blade for melee combat. The blade is sharp enough and strong enough to cut through most alloys.
Posleen officers, ‘God Kings’, are equipped with a gravity sled with a heavy weapon attached, usually an HV Missile launcher, Plasma Cannon, or Multibarreled Heavy Laser. The God King’s Gravity Sled is capable of limited flight up to 100 meters above the surface. It is highly maneuverable, and contains advanced sensing equipment and tactical software. The saucer is referred to as a ‘Tenar’ in Posleen vernacular. It is powered by a contained anti-matter reaction.
Known Posleen Weapons:
Monomolecular Blade
Flechette Shotguns
1mm Rail Guns
3mm Rail Guns
Plasma rifles (light)
Plasma Cannon (heavy)
Hyper Velocity Missiles
Multibarreled Heavy Laser (heavy)
Space Weapons:
Posleen Ship mounted weapons include Heavy Rail Guns, sometimes called Mass Drivers, and Anti-Ship Plasma Cannons. These weapons can be brought to bear in ground operations, but are of limited use (see relevant section: ‘Posleen strategy’ ‘Posleen tactics’ and ‘Posleen weaknesses’).
Space Craft:
When Posleen colonization forces enter a star system, the ships will be conjoined and interlocked into enormous globes, which break apart into individual components as they approach the target planet. Each globe is made up of some five or six hundred landing craft. The landing crafts are subdivided into three main types:
Lander: Code-named lamprey. Lampreys contain one company of normal Posleen and one to two God Kings. The Lamprey itself mounts one anti-ship weapon; a plasma cannon or mass driver, and various anti-personnel systems. Landers are approximately 100 meters across and are roughly rectangular box shaped. Capable of in-system flight only. Power plant is a Matter-Antimatter reactor.
Battle Dodecahedron: Code-named B-Dec. A B-Dec is a larger 12 sided vessel, sporting anti-ship weaponry on 11 surfaces. Also present are anti-personnel systems. 1600 Posleen regulars, multiple God Kings. Interstellar drive. M/AM Power plant.
Command Dodecahedron: Code named C-Dec. Central fighting unit of the Posleen. A C-Dec is actually a B-Dec that has Landers attached to all sides. Interstellar drive. The attached landers give a full complement of 6400 Posleen nominal.
Posleen Physiology:
The Posleen strongly resemble reptilian centaurs. They are yellow-green in color, and about 1.8 meters in height. They are somewhat dinosauroid in outward appearance, bearing a crocodile-like head and a saurian tail.
Posleen are theorized by S-2 intelligence to have been genetically engineered, which would explain their ability to survive in almost an environment, and their high resistance to chemical and biological attacks. They require little rest, and are able to move for days on the amount of sustenance that would feed a human for only one.
The Posleen are functioning hermaphrodites. They reproduce in random pairs, and lay eggs with startling regularity, usually two at a time. If a Posleen nestling survives the birthing pit (see Posleen culture and customs), it will mature within a year, ready to fight.
Posleen normals are of low intelligence, functioning on a level akin to a Chimpanzee.
Posleen God Kings (Officers) however, are about as intelligent as an average human. They are physically the same as their normals, save that they are slightly larger than their kin, and have a crest running down their neck and head. This crest will flap and twitch as a display of mood and possibly to communicate. Posleen God Kings also have some latent psychic abilities, as they are able to bond their company of normals to them.
Posleen Intelligence:
As stated above, Posleen normals have extremely limited intelligence. God Kings are more intelligent, but are extremely limited by Posleen Culture, which stresses conformity and normalcy. Essentially, they are limited by the conservatism of their society rather than the inherent abilities. It is suggested that if the Posleen are a genetically engineered species, that the God Kings are the limit of intelligence to physical hardiness that could be acquired.
Posleen Culture and Society:
The Posleen, being an ‘Uplifted’ society, maintains a number of cultural and societal traits that would likely have been abandoned by any other space faring species.
For instance, they maintain an archaic, almost religious tribal/clan system. Normals are bonded to their God Kings psychically, and have a reverential loyalty and attachment to them. The driving force behind their society is a belief in a kind of manifest destiny. Their belief is that the entire universe is theirs for the taking, and that they must continually expand and purify the universe. They refer to this belief as “The Path”.
In Posleen society, for God Kings to move upwards (they are the only socially mobile caste, Normals are incapable of changing status), they must conquer and gain land, wealth, and prestige. Then, they may retire to their fiefdoms, building factories and farms that support the war effort. The goods manufactured on their properties are bartered, and that income sustains the retired God King and his normals.
Posleen nestlings, either born on the battlefield or in a pacified fiefdom, are gathered and tossed into birthing pits. There, they fight each other for dominance, the losers being killed and eaten. This ensures that only the strongest Posleen survive. As the Posleen normals mature, they are bonded to a God King (God King nestlings must also survive the birthing pits), after which they are given the starting allowance of weapons, and are then free to join the expansion.
The Posleen place strong value on bravery and fortitude. The Posleen will not withdraw once engaged in a fight. Those God Kings that do, those that turn away from a battle are reduced to “kenstain” or outcasts, and are reduced to menial tasks, unable to again attempt to gain glory on the battlefield.
Posleen Economics:
The Posleen use a sophisticated system of bartering and trade. Their entire economy is geared towards warfare, and there is no concept of consumer goods. When a Posleen God King claims a fiefdom, he then may activate his automated builders and begin work on factories and farms. When these are finished, the God King may use the weapons to outfit the descendents of its normals and its own descendents. Or, it may sell the food and weaponry to other God Kings. All transactions are collated and recorded on a massive database called ‘The Net’.
Posleen Strategy:
When a Posleen colonization wave enters a system, the 65-70 globes (nominal) move towards the target planet. If they encounter space-borne resistance, they engage and destroy the opposition and then proceed to the planet itself, whereupon the globes break into their landing craft.
The landing craft deal with orbital defenses and ground defenses as they descend to the planets surface. Due to the competitive nature of the Posleen clans, all the Posleen landing craft immediately will make for the surface, giving up the orbital well in effort to be the first to reach the spoils on the surface.
As they descend through a planets atmosphere, groups of landers will typically aim to have planetfall along either coast of a continent. After making planetfall, the landing craft will disgorge the Posleen, which will begin pushing towards the interior of the continent.
The Posleen march at approximately 35 km per hour. Upon reaching heavy resistance, or a natural obstacle such as a mountain or river, landers or B-decs are summoned and the Posleen bypass the natural obstacle, or destroy the resistance with the aid of the space ships. Upon complete conquest of the continent, the Posleen usually settle down to their claimed fiefdoms and begin farming or manufacturing. Future waves will indulge in mopping up, or attempt to establish much smaller fiefdoms of their own. There are typically five waves in a colonization fleet.
Posleen tactics:
The Posleen approach to battles are simple. Upon meeting resistance, the sources of the incoming fire are collated by the God King’s sensor equipment, he then orders his troops to return fire. The Posleen normals mass-fire at the source of the incoming fire and obliterate it. The shots are unaimed, but the sheer volume will usually neutralize the threat. If the threat is adequately protected, the Posleen will continue to fire on it while attempting to swarm it, engaging it at close range with their monomolecular blades if necessary.
The emphasis of the Posleen is to constantly be moving. This is not because of any military doctrine, but because being stopped means less of a chance for the God King to claim a fiefdom. Also, Posleen culture emphasizes bravery and brave deeds for all to see. Therefore, the Posleen do not seek cover or elaborate maneuvers when under fire. They seek to overcome the enemy with massed firepower and sheer numbers.
If air units are detected, The Posleen God King will direct his heavy weapons to fire on them. Considering the sophistication of the sensors, and the accuracy of the Tenar-mounted heavy weapons, the threat will usually be eliminated before it can engage.
If the Posleen encounter a natural obstacle, they will attempt to bypass it. If this is impractical, they will re-board their vessels and fly around it. The Posleen do not use combat engineers, and therefore cannot build bridges over rivers, nor repair mountain roads. This is largely due to Posleen emphasis on the fighting individual rather than support personnel.
Posleen Weaknesses:
Posleen weaknesses stems from tactical and operational inflexibility. Most Posleen God Kings are not likely to greatly shift tactics or strategy in the face of problems, instead relying on the huge volume of troops to overcome resistance.
Posleen sensors have proven to be incredibly good at detecting aircraft, helicopters, or any object under power in the air. However, the Posleen sensors are unable to detect ballistic trajectories, therefore mortars and artillery rounds will not be intercepted by Posleen heavy weapons as they approach their targets. The strategic and tactical implications cannot be overstated. Artillery, sufficiently massed, will be devastating to the Posleen.
Upon making a Landing, the Posleen will usually follow major highways and roadways. In their experience, this is the quickest route to treasures and food. This makes it relatively easy to anticipate where the Posleen will be coming from and prepare accordingly. This is doubly helped by the fact that the Posleen are very slow in assembling after a landing. They typically rush about in the immediate area, looting and eating whatever they can before setting out to capture the rest of the planet. This typically provides a delay of almost a day before The Posleen can be expected to set out from their landing areas.
Due to the competitive nature of the Posleen clans, the Posleen do not cooperate well. They are also inexperienced in combined-arms operations: addition of their star ships to a land battle will be extremely uncoordinated.
The fact that the Posleen give up the gravity well of high orbit is a tremendous disadvantage. Without it, the Posleen are unable to see or detect anything over the horizon. Therefore their enemy can operate with relative impunity outside of the range of their ground weapons, and not have to worry about being observed.
The death of a Posleen Company’s God King is extremely stressful to the Posleen Normals. They quickly become uncoordinated and will turn on each other in despair unless they are quickly bonded to another God King.
The Posleen do not scout or engage in any battlefield intelligence. They simply advance until contact.
Posleen do not employ any kind of air units, save for their spacecraft. Nor do they have any kind of ‘Wet Navy’. This should allow for somewhat unmolested shipping.
The Posleen will have difficulty foraging during winter, especially during extreme cold and snow.
Most Posleen ship systems are automated. Including gunnery. However, automated gunnery is only possible in space. Inside a planet’s atmosphere, the guns must be manually operated, and far less accuracy can be expected.
Posleen Strengths:
It is of no question that the Posleen wield far superior technology than that of Earth in the early 21st century. This combined with the sheer volume of troops is perhaps their greatest asset.
Individually, each Posleen is faster and stronger than a human. The Posleen are able to survive in virtually any environment on earth. They are omnivores, allowing them to eat virtually anything that will give basic sustenance (although they prefer meat). They are able to soldier for several days on the same amount of nutrients that would push a human for one. This hardiness also manifests in a high resistance to most conventional chemical and biological attacks.
Posleen sensors are of a generation far greater than anything earth can manufacture. It allows the God Kings to detect and target aircraft from almost half a continent away. This makes air attacks against Posleen advances nearly impossible. This includes cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. Ballistic missiles could be shot down during the launch stages. Once they reach their ballistic trajectory, the Posleen would be unable to target them, same as with artillery shells.

RE: Earth in flames: The Posleen War
OOC: Partial Technology download from Galactic Transmission.
Classified Briefing: Galactic Technology
Received in the transmission from the galactics are schematics for a number of technologies that will be helpful in the upcoming battle against the Posleen. Detailed below are the concepts and some specific technologies that are applicable.
Concepts:
Gravity Control: The galactics have shown t have control over gravity and some other natural phenomena. This control allows for the levitation and propulsion of objects without the use of conventional fuels.
Matter/Anti-matter reactors: M/AM has been mastered by the Galactics, allowing a massive amount of energy to be generated. It has also been shown how to manufacture Anti-matter for the purposes of weapons.
Specific Technology Schematics:
100 mm Rail Gun: For planetary defense. This mass driver will fling a block of depleted uranium out into space at hypervelocity. The impact will penetrate and destroy Posleen B-Decs, C-Decs, and Landers.
There are technology schematics for what appears to be advanced Artificial Intelligence devices. This and more is currently being decrypted by a variety of intelligence agencies. As they are decoded, they will be made available to this committee.

RE: Earth in flames: The Posleen War
Classified Briefing: Galactic Technology
More signals from the Galactics have been received and decoded. The subject of this transmission is medical treatments and technologies. So far, the folowing has been decoded.
Hiberzine: A drug implementing long-period hibernation in the patient. This could be useful in stretching food stores and other scarce consumables.
Nanotechnology: The Galactics have forwarded instructions on how to construct Nanites. The purpose of said Nanites is medical in nature. The nanites can heal wounds that would now be lethal to the victim. Further, certain nanites can be manufactured that have restorative properties in the elderly and infirm. An 80 year old veteran of the 2nd world war can be restored to the physical age of 20 in 90 days. They will continue to age normally henceforth. The nanites are even able to repair debilitating neurological diseases such as Parkinsons and Alzheimers. This will mean a glut of available men and women who will be fit for military service to defend against the Posleen.
END REPORT
