DM OOG: Variations made. We're ready. And ... away we go!

Welcome to the land of Elsir Vale, in the southeastern regions of Faerun, north of the mystical land of Halruaa. I’m working on a map of the Vale for your personal use, but meantime, enjoy, all.

A Tide of Flames

On the road outside Drellin’s Ferry
Elsir Vale,
(South of The Shaar, East of the Wyrmsmoke Mountains)
The Sixth of Mirtul, Year of Scattered Lanterns

It was warm, a sure sign this early in Mirtul that it would be a long, hot summer. Elsir Vale sunned itself in the morning heat, a stretch of land like a green belt on the bare, blasted wastes of the Shaar to the north and the massive hips of the Wyrmsmoke Mountains to the west of the Vale, and the Giantshields to the east. The Vale ran for a good hundred kilometers or more from end to end, and was home to several settlements – a cradle of human civilization in the wilderness – and nature’s colours dominated the landscape throughout, everything from the emerald of Paiko cryptomeria to the deep purple of the Jaxon Orchid. In contrast to the bland wheat smell of the tallgrasses that waved in the plains east of the Vale, the traveler’s senses were met with the perfume of wanderwoods and the metallic smell of Aarun’s Moss.

The real gateway to Elsir Vale was the small village of Drellin’s Ferry, the westernmost human settlement of the region. But it was more than that. For the eight travelers now moving towards Drellin’s Ferry, the Wyrmsmokes staring down at them from the northern horizon, the village was also to be a base of operations – a staging point, a place to take one’s bearings before moving on.

This was mostly because these eight travelers had not come to the Vale simply for sightseeing. They had come because of the map they had come across hundreds of leagues north and west of here, in the far-off city of Athkatla. There had been a wretch in an alleyway that Sa’adi Adim had stopped to minister to, and in gratitude the dying alcoholic had left them a map he had been carrying for years, but had never had the companions or equipment to follow to its end. The map, in spidery text, spoke of a great – and, importantly, undisturbed -- treasure in a forest ruin called Vraath Keep, north of something known only as the Dwarfbridge. The map showed the keep’s location relative to the Dwarfbridge, but omitted details such as where in Faerun the Dwarfbridge was, the name of the forest, or even which river the Dwarfbridge crossed.

Intrigued by the puzzle, the newest member of the party, Alessandro Itrayem, had made some academic inquiries which chiefly involved plying people with alcohol and then breaking into a cartographer’s store. The flamboyant fighter learned that the Dwarfbridge was an old span long since obliterated in the great floods of the Year of Ravens – and that the village of Drellin’s Ferry had grown up around the ferry built to replace the bridge. The burglary on the cartographer’s residence had revealed the location of Drellin’s Ferry: on the Elsir River, hard up against the southern edge of the Witchwood – a forest which matched the description on the treasure map the party obtained.

The Company had found the starting point for their search.

They set out – including a strange half-elf named Najos, who had joined them after a caravan escort gone bad near Baldur’s Gate – the next morning, drawn by the promise of riches.
It had been weeks of travel, though, and their initial enthusiasm for the venture had faded somewhat. However, that enthusiasm began to return when the land began to dip, and the arms of the Vale opened to meet them. Swathes of green dotted with stands of Tymora’s Tears made a welcome break from the rolling, featureless plains they had left, and the party’s previously determined, even dogged pace slowed to a more gentle stroll. Even Ariel Elandinai decided to walk on the ground for a while. Overhead, a condor shrieked its hunting call as it cruised on the wind, looking for prey.

The road through Elsir Vale crested a small rise and descended into a large, shallow dell. An abandoned farmhouse, partially visible through the trees, stood on one side of the road. The Company had passed a dozen spots much like this one already today, but this one felt wrong. Then – Zanaek Grahorn first, closely followed by Alessandro and most of their party – they glimpsed the glint of mail through the brush by the side of the road. Fierce warriors -- tall, hairy humanoids with wide mouths and flat faces -- were lying in wait, some up in the branches of some of the trees. And worse still – growls issued from the undergrowth, as snarling, doglike creatures stalked out from their hiding places.

TAG: Everyone

DM OOG: For this battle only, I have made everyone’s Perception and Initiative rolls ahead of time. Most of the party have spotted the creatures. However, Najos, Corrath, and Celbrandir failed their rolls and therefore have not seen them. These three characters can still make a “Holy crap!” kind of post if they so desire, but they won’t be able to act in this round. Also, because you’ve been surprised, those three party members are flatfooted until they act in the next round – i.e. your AC drops by the amount of your Dex bonus. This is something I’ll take into account during the round.

Needless to say, you have all those spells memorised that you've specified to me (where appropriate) and all your armour can be deemed as donned. Your weapons are sheathed, of course.

Your shortened battle stats will appear in the next round.

Everyone who has spotted the creatures gets to take a partial action – which is basically an attack or casting a spell or a move. This is because this first round is the surprise round. Next round will be full combat.

For interest’s sake, the initiative order (and the results of the initiative rolls) is as follows:

Najos: 20
Ariel: 17
Skadi: 17
Corrath: 16
Alessandro: 13
Zanaek: 12
Halden: 10
Celbrandir: 5
Ambushers: 4

And finally, you will find a map of your situation here. Your position, obviously, is in the centre of the road cut. Trying to ride or run up the sides of the cut costs you 4 squares of movement to start climbing. Similarly, pushing into the thick undergrowth will cost you 2 squares to enter. Any queries, let me know devil

DM OOG: I should have added one other thing: you don't have to wait until your initiative "turn" comes up before you can post. What I do instead is take everyone's replies to the post and meld it all together in the round update. Your character still takes his turn wherever he is in the initiative list, but you don't have to wait for his turn to come up before you post what you're going to do.

Make sense? Just go ahead and post up whatever you want to do, whether it's your turn or not, and I'll resolve it in the update.

OOG: Anyways, more on surprise rounds.

You can take a single action, be it a move action (such as moving up to your speed, or drawing your sword/shield, or moving up to your speed and drawing your sword/shield) or a standard action (such as casting a spell or attacking something if you have your weapon in hand, or charging up to your move speed and then attacking something with a melee weapon at +2 to hit, -2 AC. There's also the Total Defense action, which boosts your AC by +4, or by +6 if you're trained in Acrobatics. Good if you can't find anything else to hit).

You can also take free actions, such as talking (or talking through your rings), shifting one square in any direction, dropping prone (taking a -4 penalty to AC vs melee attacks but a +4 bonus to AC vs ranged attacks) or quick-drawing your weapon (those of you who have Crystals of Least Return, you can draw your weapon as a free action). You can take as many free actions as you wish (though you can't take a 5 foot step if you've already moved in the round, or if you're going to otherwise move in the round).

Also, I'm not sure where the horses went. Maybe you're all riding really, really, really close. And this would be a lot easier if the magical artillery hadn't managed to completely miss the opponent. Corrath has Uncanny Dodge, which means the flat-footed thing isn't going to bother her, but your casters are kind of squishy at the moment.

Skadi
Elsir Vale

"Ambush."

Skadi's expression did not change as she unslung her shield and felt the sword, thanks to the Crystal of Return she had attached to the hilt, sprung eagerly to her hand. Truth be told, she was ready for this fight. They had been travelling for weeks now, and Skadi was almost beginning to regret allowing Alessandro to investigate that accursed map. She would never to admit it to herself, but the Calishite cleric did not like being bored.

"Lord Tyr, I ask your blessing in this fight." she muttered, readying herself for combat.

Zanaek Grahorn

On the road outside Drellin’s Ferry, Elsir Vale

The journey to Elsir Vale had been long and tedious. The promise of a great treasure in a distant keep beyond Dwarfbridge had lured many of his companions to take this journey. He was only along for the historical value and to keep his companions alive, and to convince the two thieves to turn away from their unlawful life despite several failures before. He had at least made it a quest to convince them to at least steal from the corrupt for the good hoping that committing good deeds would turn them toward a lawful life completely.

"It would be far more rewarding knowing that you have..." he trailed off from speaking to Corrath after his eye caught a glint of mail in the bushes. He didn't need to say anything because the others were starting to notice as well. Well almost the others.

"Ambush!" he shouted simultaneously with Skadi and immediately called upon his god to protect them all from these fowl creatures lying in wait. The church called the ability Magic Circle against Evil but to Torm it was merely a barrier of himself, a part of him that would encircle his follower and those that the follower wanted protected along with him. Zanaek knew it would keep summoned creatures from meleeing them so long as the party stayed within the ten foot radius of him, but it wouldn't protect them from ranged attacks. Unless these creatures were summoned, the best his spell could do for the group was increase their ability to avoid attacks and resist mental control and/or magical effects by these creatures.

Whatever they are, Zanaek thought.

"The protection spell I'm casting only affects those within ten feet of me," he warned everyone, "so stay close until I'm done and lets end this quickly."

TAG: ALL

Everyone should receive a +2 AC bonus and a +2 saves bonus. The spell only effects creatures within a 10' radius of the touched creature, in this case myself.

Now the spell says it can prevent "summoned" creatures from entering this "bubble". But... I dunno if they are summoned or not or if it still applies to them.

OOG: Actually, it's magic circle against evil or magic circle against chaos, and I assume you prepared (and cast) the former given that something trying to kill you is probably evil. And it actually lasts 10 minutes per caster level, or an hour total.

Ariel Elandinai
On the road outside Drellin’s Ferry, Elsir Vale
(South of The Shaar, East of the Wyrmsmoke Mountains)
The Sixth of Mirtul, Year of Scattered Lanterns

It was warm, and quite lovely. The eight of them were now moving towards Drellin’s Ferry, the Wyrmsmokes staring down at them from the northern horizon, the village was also to be a base of operations – a staging point, a place to take one’s bearings before moving on.

The land began to dip, and swathes of green dotted doted the area. The party had slowed their walk, so it was easier for Ariel to walk than fly at their pace. As she had adopted, once on the ground, she pulled up her coif..which was the hat she wore, while pulling up her cloak. Its magic was effective at hiding her wings. Overhead, a condor shrieked its hunting call as it cruised on the wind, looking for prey.

Ariel smiled, as she walked the slower pace, enjoying the scenery around her. The warm soil felt nice, as she walked in the middle of the party. As they walked down a road, with steep sides however, Ariel raised her guard. It was to easy a place for an ambush.

An abandoned farmhouse, partially visible through the trees, stood on one side of the road. The Company had passed a dozen spots much like this one already today, but this one felt wrong. The Gods must have been agreeing as well, as suddenlythe cry of AMBUSH! went up through the ranks.

As Ariel drew up her bow, she could see a glimmer of mail through the brush by the side of the road. Fierce warriors -- tall, hairy and UGLY, were lying in wait. But what drew her attention was the snarling sounds, as some doglike creatures stalked out from their hiding places.

Her arrow was notched in her bow, almost within the same motion of drawing it from the magical quiver, as she stood near Zanaek, hearing he say something about a spell. She held her arrow, waiting for the first target that appeared to be the most threat. It was that one, she would treat to a taste of her arrows.

DM OOG: As for the horses, we'll rule you are, as Light says, riding in very close proximity. I'll fix it up in the next update, but yes, those of you who have horses are riding them. It may be useful to roll for Ride checks (1d20 + Dex modifier + 3 where you're not trained in it, which includes most of you). I'll rule on the results. Dismounting is a move-equivalent action which you don't need to make a check for. You might want to consider this possibility given the enemy is presently amongst thick undergrowth, but as I say that's a matter entirely for each of you.

Ktala, I keep forgetting you don't have access to photobucket or flickr where you are, so I'll get a copy of the map to you and for this round, make your shot at the nearest target if and when any of your attackers expose themselves. (This is called "holding an action", folks.)

Alessandro
The Drelin's Ferry Road

"You know," Alessandro said, his shoulders sagging, "when I said I wanted a share of whatever the map led us to, this wasn't quite what I had in mind."

Perhaps it was just his imagination, but the warm summer breeze, so inviting before, seemed now to waft the animal stink of their ambushers toward them. The actor grimaced. There were two, three - he squinted - four, maybe, that he could make out, but how many more were hiding in that lush greenery?

Nervously, he patted his horse's neck, trying to calm her. She, at least, could smell what was out there, even if he couldn't, nervously stepping in place where they'd stopped. Not for the first time on this trip, Alessandro wished he'd been a better rider. In his mind, horses were for pulling things, though, not for sitting on. When was the last time anyone ever got thrown by a cart?

"So, anyone think they might just want to make friends?" he ventured hopefully, looking up at the others. The only reply he received was shouted orders from Zanaek to stay close, as the others shouldered arms. Well. That sounded pretty definite. He sighed. It would be nice, just once in a while, he mused, if you could get to the fame and riches bit without the whole 'hard work' thing in between.

Meanwhile, he realised, he was the only one still mounted. He looked doubtfully at the ground. Getting on a horse was bad enough, but getting off one presented its own unique challenges.

After a couple tugs, he managed to get his boot out of the right stirrup and land - perhaps less gracefully than he would have liked - on the hard dirt of the road. The neat flourish as he drew his blades made up for it though, he felt.

"You don't have to look so happy about this," he grumbled under his breath, shooting an evil look at Skadi, beside him.

TAG: Anyone?

OOC: Alessandro fast dismounts,(DC 20, result of 26), then draws his weapons as his move action.
