The Moon
"The Avengers, Earth's mightiest heroes. Everyone on this Earth, number six hundred and sixteen, is well familiar with the infamous battlecry 'Avengers Assemble!', but such is not the case in all worlds. In another, very similar world, number one thousand six hundred and ten, a very similar team wages a neverending battle against evil under the name the Ultimates."
The Watcher makes a gesture, like pulling aside an invisible curtain. Nothing moves. Earth is in the same place, at the same time, but there are significant changes not easily visible from our viewpoint on the moon, for this is not the same earth. "Here, once again, is a very similar world, Earth number eight hundred twelve. Eight-twelve is populated by roughly the same people as the other worlds, with slight differences. Eight-twelve was born eons ago, a divergence created when a fish on six hundred and sixteen chose whether or not to eat a particular insect. The most striking difference forged by that fish choosing to devour an insect at a specific point in time ages ago, is that here, Earth's mightiest heroes are only just now being united under the name of The Avengers."
Welcome, true believers, to
Avengers Assemble!
As you hopefully inferred from Uatu's prelude, this game is a Marvel Universe game unlike any you've ever played before. In this game, you'll be playing Earth-812's version of the world's mightiest heroes, the Avengers. However, you're not playing the heroes you know and love, not exactly anyways. Just like the Ultimate universe made some slight (and some drastic) changes to the characters, you too will be expected to take on the role of one of these heroes and shape them into something new.
But that's not to say you have complete creative control. Certain things must remain constant. Names and powers, for example. Tony Stark will always be Iron Man. He will always be head of Stark Industries. He will always have the 'superpower' of a very fancy suit of armor. Your freedom is in what you do between those lines. What will make him unique? Is he still a recovering alcoholic? How would 812 Tony Stark feel about the Superhuman Registration Act? I think you get the idea.
Below, I'm going to post a list of characters to choose from, all of whom were at some point members of the 616 Avengers. They will come in the form of partially filled in character sheets. What's filled in in
red
is information you are not allowed to change. It will usually be limited to the character's name, alias, powers, and a little biographical information. This is merely to prevent someone from trying to play Thor, aka Hank Pym, with the awesome power of his super strength and rocky orange skin. All the really important parts are still yours to decide.
Structure
You may have noticed a lack of initial set-up to the story. Part of that is to allow you as much freedom as possible in character development. The other part of the reasoning is the structure of the game does not call for it. If any of you played
Isaiah Rivers: A Super-Powered RPG
, then you may remember my previous attempt to run a game using Issues. The Issue system is a style of episodic gaming where new stories are thrown at you as you finish the events of the previous story. All the Issues will happen in this thread, and they're ideally pretty short, a month, give or take depending on how things play out. Part of why Isaiah Rivers floundered was that I didn't have the issues planned out well enough. Not a problem this time around. I've got years of Marvel story ideas to tweak and present you with, so I'm not concerned about running out of ideas. There's all sorts of fun stuff, like Galactus, or an Invasion of Doombots. I don't wanna reveal all my cards just yet, but you can expect loads of excitement, that's for sure.
Rules
1. GM is law.
2. PM all character sheets to GM for approval.
3. Obey the TOS, no spamming, flaming, baiting, trolling, etc. etc.
4. No swearing. The friendly neighborhood mods will just edit it anyways. Save 'em the trouble, and besides, this is comic-land. Why say "****" when you can say something much more colorful like "*&^#%@!"?
5. Try to limit OOC chatter. I'm not calling an all-out ban, but try to keep it to only a couple sentences, and try to package it in with an IC post whenever possible.
6. To the best of your ability, use proper spelling and grammar. The occasional typo is acceptable, but a big block of text without any punctuation or capitalization or even logical paragraph breaks is a pain in the #$%^ to try and decipher, so don't do it, Bub.
7. No God-modding. I should hope I don't have to explain this. Remember, you may be superpowered, but so is everyone else. Also remember, with great power, comes great responsibility.
8. Most importantly, be creative and have fun!
Edit: The Game will likely begin sometime soon after I have Cap, Iron Man, and ideally 4 or 5 others, although more are welcome.

*This list is not completely comprehensive. I excluded certain former Avenger's members. If you wanna play as
one that I've excluded
, PM me. However, I've excluded the members of the Fantastic Four who've had stints with the Avengers because I'll probably use them as NPCs in-game, along with Golden Age Human Torch, just to avoid confusion. I've also excluded Avengers who are also Eternals or Inhumans because I don't quite know how they'll be factored into the 812 universe yet, if at all.
**The Powers listed here are not completely comprehensive. Certain characters have more powers than those listed here, but the red are just things that the character absolutely needs to have to really be that character. For example, Namor has a lot of other powers attributed to him, but his strength and amphibious nature are the powers that really make Namor Namor. If you are unfamiliar with a character, I'd encourage you to look them up on Wikipedia to find out more about their 616 and Ultimate versions.

As Thor, a paragon of all that is good. As Blake, he is humble, but confused as to his role in the world. He struggles with his true self (Thor) at all times. Thor exists seperately in Blake's mind, as if two people share the same body, and both want the other out.
Bio:
Blake has been Thor all his life. Since he was a teenager, Blake has known, as he transformed into Thor in time to save himself from being struck by a car. He is one of the oldest heroes, in his form as Blake, at least. Blake went into medicine to try and live up to the paragon that is Thor, but continuously finds that though Thor is a force of good, he can be cold and callous in his objectives. Blake feels as though he lives under a shadow, and has lived that way all his life.

Name:
Dr. Bruce Banner
Alias:
The Incredible Hulk
Appearance:
Age:
36
Powers:
When severely angered, Bruce transforms into a giant green creature of almost unlimited strength and endurance. However, when in this form, he has very limited control over his actions, and is currently working on a way to rectify that.
Gadgets:
Brute force
Weaknesses:
As the Hulk calms down, he begins to return to his normal human form.
Personality:
As one of the most renowned scientists in the world, Bruce Banner is considered one of the greatest minds on Earth. He has developed expertise in the fields of biology, chemistry, engineering, and physiology, and holds a Ph.D. in nuclear physics. According to a magazine article written about him, he "possesses a mind so brilliant, it cannot be measured on any known intelligence test."
The Hulk is a monster if there ever was one, thriving on anger and unleashing paths of destruction where he roams. He does have a sense of morality such that he does not harm those who don't threaten him, but he rarely shows mercy towards his enemies, and is willing to use any amount of resources necessary to neutralize them.
Bio:
A Princeton graduate with a Ph.D. in nuclear physics, Bruce Banner is a world-renowned scientist with an uncategorized level of brilliance. He grew up in a small town in Illinois, where he enrolled in school. He was a freshman in high school by the age of twelve, and graduated when he was sixteen. It was in high school where he met Betty Ross, a girl whose father was a well respected military general. A romance sprouted between them, and eventually lead to them being married several years later.
At the age of thirty-four, while supervising the trial of an experimental gamma bomb for the U.S. Defense Department at a nuclear research facility in New Mexico, Bruce selflessly rushed to the rescue of an ignorant teenager who had wandered onto the testing field as the countdown ticked inexorably toward zero. After shoving the young man to safety in a nearby ditch, Banner was struck full-force by the bomb blast. He survived, but was irradiated by the deadly gamma energy.
While in a nearby medical facility, a nurse wished to test Bruce's blood, and stuck him with a needle. This seemed to have triggered a consequence from the gamma energy, and the Hulk was born. The ensuing rampage resulted in the complete destruction of the medical grounds, and three severe injuries before the Hulk was neutralized by the military.
It was then that Bruce's father-in-law, General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, took the initiative to imprison Banner until the secret to his other persona could be uncovered, much to the dismay of Betty. It was only after a mere two days that the Hulk managed to escape, and Bruce has since been on the run in various countries, communicating only with Betty through hardlines. He has recently aligned himself with the Avengers, hoping that he will have the necessary resources to be able to control the beast inside him, and eradicate the voice that haunts his thoughts to this very day.

Name:
Steve Rogers
Alias:
Captain America
Appearance:
Age:
28 (born July 4, 1917)
Gender:
Male
Powers:
Peak human strength and endurance, exceptional training in hand-to-hand and weapons combat.
Gadgets:
Shield crafted from vibranium and an experimental steel alloy that makes it nearly indestructible.
Weaknesses:
Even with the Super Soldier serum, Steve is still a mortal man. He can catch colds, he can get hurt, and he can be killed just as easily as any normal human can.
Personality:
Steve grew up in an era that most people today believe to have been innocent and naive. He believes very strongly in the promise of America, and has dedicated his life to defending its ideals. However, the cynical attitude displayed by many Americans these days has left Steve rather confused and unsure of himself. What good is Captain America in a world that doesn't want him?
Steve is also hampered by guilt from what happened to Bucky, his partner during World War II. He considers himself a failure for not saving Bucky, and has begun to question whether he can ever be trusted with a friend's life ever again.
Bio:
Steven Grant Rogers was born in the Lower East Side of Manhattan to Irish immigrants Sarah and Joseph Rogers. Steve was a sickly child who grew into a tall, but frail young man majoring in Fine Arts at college. When he attempted to enlist in the Army, Steve was rejected for his physical deficiencies. Disappointed, Steve had resigned himself to a life of mediocrity when an Army officer approached Steve and offered a chance to serve his country by taking part in a top-secret project called Operation: Rebirth. Eager for any chance to do his part, Steve volunteered immediately and became the first human test subject for the Super-Soldier serum.
Steve was injected with the serum and then exposed to a specialized radiation, which activated the serum and put Steve through an arduous physical transformation. Once the process was completed, Steve had literally become a new man--his once-frail body had been transformed into the maximum of human strength and efficiency, greatly enhancing his musculature and agility. Before any more Super-Soldiers could be created, however, a Nazi spy murdered the scientist who had developed the formula, and then attempted to kill Steve, as well. Steve easily got the upper hand and killed the spy, then vowed to use his newfound strength to take down the Third Reich.
The U.S. thrust Steve straight into the middle of the war, transforming him into a superhero and propaganda symbol to counter Hitler's favored servant, the Red Skull. During his intense military training, Steve was given a uniform modeled after the American flag, a personal sidearm, and the codename Captain America. President Franklin Roosevelt later presented Steve with his signature shield, which proved an effective weapon, though he continued to carry his pistol, as a backup.
During the war, Steve befriended James "Bucky" Barnes, who proved to be a capable soldier himself and became Steve's sidekick. Together, they helped rally the Allies and led the charge against the Nazi war machine. In the last days of the war, Steve and Bucky tried to stop Baron Zemo, a Nazi agent, from destroying an experimental drone plane. Zemo had placed an armed explosive on the plane, which Steve and Bucky reached just before it launched. The drone took them over the ocean, and as Bucky tried to defuse the bomb, it detonated. Steve was hurled by the explosion into the freezing waters of the North Atlantic, where his body was cooled into a state of suspended animation.
Steve was believed dead until his body was discovered by an American fishing boat, sixty years after the explosion. The government quickly took possession of his body and thawed him out, and after a short period of reintroduction to the modern world, Steve resumed his service to the United States and was assigned to the newly-formed Avengers.

RE: Avengers Assemble! (aka "Put that thing away before you hurt someone, Reynar!)
GM APPROVED
Name: James Rupert Rhodes
Alias: War Machine
Appearance:
Age: 35
Powers: None
Gadgets: War Machine Armor, a more heavily armed variant of Iron Man's armor
Weaknesses: Concern for Tony Stark’s well being
Personality: Jim Rhodes is a clear cut, defined individual due to his military career in the Air Force. He is sometimes cocky, and easy to anger when it comes to dealing harshly with Tony Stark’s sometimes lazy personality.
Bio: James Rhodes was a pilot in the United States Air Force stationed in South Viet Nam during the U.S. military involvement in Southeast Asia. Blasted out of the sky by enemy rockets, Rhodes managed to land in one piece and was attempting to get his craft airworthy when inventory Tony Stark, clad in his Iron Man armor, happened by. Stark had just completed his original armor, had avenged his fellow prisoner Professor Yinsen, and was trying to make his way through the jungle to the American defense perimeter. Attacked by the Viet Cong, Iron Man proved to Rhodes they were on the same side, and Rhodes allowed him to drain the helicopter's batteries to recharge his armor. The two then trekked through the jungle together, finely discovering a hidden enemy rocket base. Steeling an enemy helicopter, they destroyed the base, and flew to the nearest American encampment. Before leaving Viet Nam for the United States, Stark offered Rhodes a job as a pilot as soon as his military stint was over. After a succession of other jobs, Rhodes finally accepted Stark's offer and became his personal pilot and chief aviation engineer. While working at Stark International, Rhodes aided Iron Man in his battles against such foes as the Roxxon Oil Company, Justin Hammer, the Dreadnoughts, and Obadiah Stane.
When devastating personal problems caused Tony Stark to abuse alcohol and become incapable of using the Iron Man armor responsibly, Rhodes put it on in order to defend Stark International from the criminal Magma. He offered to return it but Stark insisted Rhodes take on the responsibility of being Iron Man for a while to enable Stark to enjoy himself. Reluctantly Rhodes agreed, and after Stark employee Morley Erwin helped him figure out how to operate the armor, found himself in battle with such foes as Thunderball, Firebrand, Krang, Flying Tiger, the Radioactive Man, the Mandarin, the Zodiac, and Vibro. Although he was unable to help Stark from being swindled out of proprietorship of Stark International by Obadiah Stane, he did prevent Stane from taking custody of all of Stark's Iron Man armors. With Morley Erwin and his sister Clytemnestra, Rhodes embarked upon a brief career as a mercenary in order to obtain funds with which they could begin a new business venture. By the time they succeeded in raising sufficient capital, Tony Stark had recovered from his several months-long alcohol binge, and offered to join them. The four moved out to Silicon Valley, California, where they founded Circuits Maximus, a small electronics design firm. Stark still was not interested in resuming his Iron Man role and gave his blessing to Rhodes to continue. Rhodes was initiated into the established ranks of superhuman champions when he became one of those who participated in the first Secret Wars. Since then, James Rhodes has received the newest suit designed by Tony Stark, heavily armored and upgraded with a vast array of offensive weaponry. It was nicknamed the “War Machine” He fights alongside his best friend in his role as Iron Man.
