Good stuff. Really, really good stuff. I bought all 9 in a batch on E-Bay for $30.00 plus shipping. It was a great buy. Most Borders stores have them, too. I know the one at Bridgeport Village in Tualatin has all nine for $6.00 or $7.00 each.

I am on Solo Command at the present. My only gripe is at myself when I didn't pick these up sooner. This is a really great series!

My music video, Winded, won its first award at a film festival. The Accolade Competition gave winded an Honorable Mention award; I received the postal letter Saturday. There was 1 Award of Excellence given to a music video and 6 Honorable Mentions, so I feel pretty happy with the selection and it's a nice validation of the work I've done. There are many more film festivals to hear from in the future, though, so I'll see how it does. It has been selected to 2 film festivals out of 2 so far, which is great.

Thanks.

So how many colleges are you applying to? I knew a lot of kids who applied to like 8, 10, 12 schools, which I always thought was funny. I only applied to 4. One was a reach (UCLA's film program), one was almost a slam dunk but not quite (USC; I didn't get in, somehow, even though 4 kids from my class with lower SATs and lower grades did, really ticked me off, I was told I had a 95% chance), and then two were safety's, basically 100% (Chapman and LMU; Chapman gave me a huge presidential scholarship, $14,000/yr). I ended up not getting into UCLA or USC, the only two schools I cared about, and since I hadn't really done enough research about LMU or Chapman I was pretty much not going to be happy with either one. Chapman tried to bribe me basically, but their "you have to stay on campus until you're 21" already ruled them out. I didn't learn that until well after I was accepted, didn't do enough homework on them, so that's a lesson to learn -- know before you apply. Also they had girls and guys dorms, separated by huge distances. I thought, wow, any school that conservative I'm not interested in going to, sounds like no fun. On the most liberal level, normal schools (state schools) are co-ed by dorm room, so guys and girls rooms could be right next to one another. That's pretty much awesome. The next level is schools like LMU, co-ed by floor in general, so one floor is guys, one is girls, that's fair enough. The next level is co-ed by building, so no buildings have both guys and girls. Now that's freakin' lame. Then again, I didn't want to stay in dorms at all, so I ended up ruling out Chapman because I knew dorm life was NOT for me. I'm used to having my own room, heck, I grew up in houses where I had large areas of the house to myself if I wanted, no sharing space, so I didn't want to do that while I was trying to study and focus on school. I ended up choosing LMU, by default, because I had only two options and one sucked. I later learned that LMU sucked, too. I read a bunch of articles in their school paper before going there and two out of three year-end editorials talked about how terrible the school was, one was a junior, one was a freshman. The freshman said she was leaving and going back to Seattle because LMU wasn't friendly and basically sucked. The junior said he couldn't believe he was finally entering his final year, given how much the school sucked and how every year he thought he'd never make it another year and that he wanted to quit and go somewhere else. He was extremely negative on the school. That's when I realized I was in for trouble.

Then I went to LMU, it did in fact suck in almost every way imaginable, despite 58% girls (who were mostly hot, it's L.A. after all) and a beautiful campus. The people were not friendly, the classes were like high school all over again (too small, attendance requirements, nonsense like that, felt like I was in high school, plus religion classes, no thanks), etc. Then I learned that LMU was rated #1 most depressed students by Princeton Review not much later, it has consistently hovered in the 1-5 range on that chart year after year, a really bad school I couldn't recommend to anyone. The cafeteria closed at 8 p.m. even on weekends, which was absurd, as I always eat a late dinner and that was a constant source of frustration. So I quit LMU after a semester and returned to Oregon to go to OSU with my friends. It was an inferior school in many ways, but my department, philosophy, I felt was very strong surprisingly and I got a good amount out of my college education, all things considered.

My lesson and advice is to make sure you either submit to more than 4 schools, which was a mistake of mine, probably more like 6 is fine, 8-12 is ridiculous, there's no reason for that, unless you're going to submit to 5-6 schools you think you can't get into and just want to try "in case." I think that's somewhat of a waste of time and money but that's just me -- college applications require so much time to do each one, as I'm sure you are realizing. But also, when you submit, really do your homework on the school. Figure out what's important to you and whether that school meets ALL of your needs, not just whether it has a good program for what you're doing. I knew LMU and Chapman had good film programs, in fact Chapman now has one of the leading film programs in the nation and I would brag about it to anyone -- my friend Bryan just graduated from their grad program and I've seen their facilities, which are absolutely amazing, and their quality of student is very high as well. I've hired many Chapman graduates now for my professional work and had great results. They turn out a lot of amazing cinematographers for some reason. But I felt for undergrad it would have been a bad experience for me at least.

Little details of a place you're going to spend 4 years at really matter. I think adults unfortunately give bad advice on college and forget the importance of having a good time. I was so focused on my work and my studies, because I thought I was being smart and really taking college seriously, that I now have a lot of regrets (as useless as those are) about the experiences I had. Ultimately, especially doing what I'm doing, who cares if I got straight A's (one B) and was one of the best students in my program? I'm not saying I didn't derive great pride in my work, in philosophy, and have some fun in my department because I loved what I was studying, but the rest was honestly stupid BS. I wish instead of studying so hard for useless tests nobody cares about I had went out, partied, and had a good time like everyone else. Because now in the real world it's much harder to do that.

I think it's a big mistake to take something so seriously that you end up not having fun, unless you sacrifice fun for a great future. In my case I always knew it wouldn't matter too much whether I did great in college or not, I was just stubborn and because I believe OSU is an inferior university, not by the quality they offer of classes but by the quality of student they admit, I didn't want anyone at that school to beat me on anything, so I always made sure that didn't happen. But, for that reason, I didn't have as much fun as I could have. College, I think, should be a fun experience.

Then again, hindsight is 20/20, and at the time I figured even if there was only a 10% chance that I'd later go to graduate school, I wanted to have the kind of resume that would allow me to do that. So at least today I have more options open than many people. My 3.97 GPA, philosophy awards, strong recommendations, etc. would all help me if I later wanted to go to grad school anywhere, but especially if for some reason I wanted a masters in philosophy or wanted to go to law school, for instance. It's just that what ended up happening to some degree is I burned myself out so much on school in general that I would never consider going back. Part of that is also where you are in life. When I was exiting high school I was prepared for the challenges of college, like a marine or something that goes through training I was the sharpest, most ready of anyone to tackle academic challenges (all of which, in college, I found much easier than high school anyway; my HS was very tough, JHS, that is). When I left college I was burned out on the entire experience, having worked too hard (finished in 3 years of academic school), and adopted a humble attitude for too long. It's good to be humble in life, to be open to learning, open to new experiences, and everyone should go into college that way! The problem with me now is I'm not that humble anymore. I can't sit there and listen to a teacher I think is full of bantha poodoo and just take it. I will fight them back in their classroom because it's wrong to confuse kids / students with incorrect information. I also don't really have that mindset to learn in the classroom anymore, I want to learn in the real world, and it requires a great deal of patience to learn in a classroom. You have to have a type of mindset and attitude that I unfortunately don't really have anymore. Especially when you realize that usually it requires 4 years to finish college, so each term, which seems so tough, is only a fraction of the total (or each semester, even tougher, still only 1/8 of the total).

I think it's probably tough either way with college, because of course you want to do well and excel at what you're studying, and if you don't do well it can haunt you later in life, but I have to say if you don't have fun that can also haunt you later in life. I had no fun really. I didn't date any girls in college, I was too busy studying to even think about that, and I didn't make any new friends either. I just kept my same friends from high school and rarely hung out with them anyway, everyone was too busy, myself and my friends in general.

Congrats Bowen! I like the look of both of your music videos, camera work, images, and lighting. I'm glad to hear your music videos are doing very well in the festivals. If I had the $, I would use your company to help film my fan film.

I'm really tired today and look forward to sleep. sleep

If I met a fan here who had a really great fan film idea and wanted to involve me in some way, like let's say they had the script and the ideas and just wanted me to help direct the filmmaking and lend my producing skills, I'd probably do it for free. It just depends if I had the time and how good the idea was, because I've always wanted to do a fan film but I don't want to just be like the guy who finances it and provides some equipment, that's what I like to call getting used, haha. But if it was a sweet collaboration I think that'd be a lot of fun.

Thanks for the comments, I'm really excited about doing another couple of music videos. I really liked Winded and I think it turned out great, but I feel both of my music videos are really good "traditional," sort of classic videos, now I want to do something really off-the-wall, something wacky where some people will love it, others will be like, "... I don't get it... what the heck was that?" I just want to experiment a bit more and see what happens, make a few videos that are really original and kooky.

Bowen, as far as my plans go right now, I'm only applying to around 5 or 6 schools, which is still quite a few. This is mostly because I'm primarily applying to very tough schools, so if I increase the number of potential colleges, my chances of being accepted at one of them goes up, if only a little bit.

The only issue is finding enough schools with good crew teams and fabulous Japanese programs that aren't hard to be accepted to.

kinda wished i had kept up with my japanese language skills after high school, but i only took it 2 semesters in college. it's amazing how much you can forget without using it that much. i had problems with the way the college classes taught the curriculum , it was completely different from the way i had learned it throughout elementary, middle and high school and that threw me off. now i wished i had just stuck with it cause it's almost embarrassing how much i've forgotten. so stick with it cause it's a great language, if a little complex and confusing.

I used to be pretty good at French, it was the only subject in high school (amazingly enough) that I had straight As for four years in, 8 semesters of As. I was a 3.85 student so I had mostly all As but somehow I had one B in almost every other subject, which is weird.

Well, I was really excited today for two reasons! First of all, we finished off the ten-week corporate project we've been working on. I still have to press some DVDs but that wasn't in my contractual agreement, it is just part of the bonus I'm providing to the client, and because I think it's cool to have DVDs of the work we've done. I'm still waiting on some of my workflow there, I have my DVD publisher (burner / labeler, automated for up to 50 at one time), but the Epson 3800 color printer (about $1,100, ugg, these things are expensive!) was weather-delayed somehow (what the heck?) in Vernon, CA. So it should arrive Tuesday or at worst Wednesday. Then I'll print up the DVDs and mail them out. The menus are done, everything has been tested many times to make sure they all work, and the graphics are done and ready for printing whenever the Epson arrives. Also the disk publisher is having some weird software glitch where it won't allow me to print onto the whole disk, like it shows in the manual, so I am calling tech support tomorrow. I just got this thing so it's tough to figure out initially.

The second reason I'm excited is because I just learned today that Winded, the music video I did, is an Official Selection of the 2008 Action on Film International Film Festival here in Pasadena, CA! It's a nominee for Best Music Video. Last year there were 3 nominees, so I take it they are pretty selective with their nominations and I'm very pleased that my music video continues to do well on the festival circuit. It is now 3 for 4 overall, with an Honorable Mention win and now a nomination for Best Music Video. I'm just hoping it picks up a win somewhere along the line. For me that would really put the icing on the cake.

Congratulations, Bowen! Good luck in the competition!

Today, as it is the first official day of legal NCAA recruiting, I will be sending letters to college coaches and hoping they like me enough to respond to my requests for a meeting time!

I will also do some more Constitutional Law homework.

Nice, good luck with that! I'm rather glad to have ended my frequent essay writing days. I still love writing but it's something I do now on a bigger scale when I do it, and less often. wink

I did have to writeup voiceover text for this corporate project I finished, which was interesting because it was basically like writing up marketing text for a company that I don't work for, haha.

Well, I know it's getting redundant at this point, but more good news again today! Winded was accepted as an Official Selection to Hermosa Shorts Film Festival here in Hermosa Beach too! So that's 4 for 5.

The Dark Knight was amazing. I got to see it at 6:00 yesterday in the middle of my normal work shift. Awesome. However, I'd say Batman Begins was better, though people seem to think this was better.

As I understand basically The Dark Knight makes you forget about the second coming of Jesus, because that's just child's play compared to the Joker. At least, that's what the critics have said so far. I haven't gotten to see the movie yet, which puts me in the crowd of people who haven't truly experienced life. wink
