They represent your post count...and they used to be next to your name....but then I was like "what the heck. am I crazy? I haven't noticed these in a while..." and just figured I hadn't noticed them in awhile. But i'm not crazy! They DID just come back!

Yah, they used to have them as a regular thing. But in the past several years, they have been gone, with the exception of one short stint about two years ago (but they were quickly removed).
I personally don't like the stars. It's a form of rank, which I don't think the forums need. I think all posts are valuable and equally worthy, no matter if it's your first post or your 10,000th.
I with they would go away.

I like the stars, but I think they should be based on word count rather than post count -- it's unfair to posters like me who type a dissertation half of the time I post 
I would have ten stars if it were based on word counts, haha.
