In the IEFF we would have monthly meetings were we would either gather at some ones house or go to lunch and just hang out we caught a couple of movies as a group and when there were events around we partnered with other Star Wars Fan groups to organize a presence so we could all show what each group had to offer. Some of the things we did was have groups within the group that met up more often and play Saga Edition, do marathons of the movies and even some people started a book club over the forums. They would decide a Star Wars novel to read and have discussions over the forums on the book. I know I am a new poster to these boards but I feel if we start small and connect the people who are regular about visiting the boards then once we have a routine of getting together than we can all brainstorm better ideas on growing our group. Feel free to shut me down also i don't want you guys to feel like I am trying to take over the group.

Not a problem so is there any date set up for a Fan Force meeting in July yet and how about any ideas. Also if there are any people who enjoy Role Playing me and my buddy are looking to start up a new Saga edition game we are located in Newberg but traveling isn't a big deal and we have quite a few books and are willing to educate you if you are new to RPG and would like to give it a spin just PM me.

Edit: Also in 6 days I will have Omen so anyone else who will be reading it if your game to discuss i look forward to it. Just start up a thread and i will be there.

I think Vengeance's points about keeping it fun (with fun activities), with photos posted on the OFF, are very good. In the past, meetings at restaurants have not been as fun as meeting at a members home watching movies or playing games. We talked about bowling or meeting at a roller or ice rink in the past, but never did it. We should set up meetings around activities !!!

What attracted me here was SW of course. tongue
But I also found a sense of community here, a sense of grand acceptance and community. Everybody was different yet everybody genuinely interested in one another. If we keep that going here, people will want to come to the meetings. People will be drawn to the idea of a group of SW friends. Though I had never made it to one in the past, I was always interested.
Also, the meetings cannot outcast or separate the message board. Sometimes when a fanforce holds regular meetings all the message board becomes is a place to post when and where the next meeting will be. It sort of alienates those who were interested yet unable to attend.

Initially, what our focus is as a fanforce is what will attract new members. I don't think our focus should be on the activities themselves or expansion itself, rather the act of doing the activities with each other as a means of finding common ground and relationship with one another. Being interested in what everyone likes and doing it for the soul purpose of community. And as long as we are telling people about us, advertising in each of our own creative ways, expansion should come. happy

Hey Bill, what exactly is OryCon? I'm not really familiar with conventions in the area. blush

You've, no doubt, heard of the big conventions like Celebration, Dragon Con, Emerald City Comic Con, All-Con, San Diego Comic Con?

OryCon is something along those lines, only vastly scaled down. It the local con, here in Portland that is pretty much open to all forms of costuming and convention-like activities - workshops, gaming room, panel discussions, merchant room and so forth.

This year it is happening during Thanksgiving weekend. I know the timing is terrible, with most people travelling to visit with families, and such. But it is a decent enough con, despite their stern ruling against 'buckets and blasters'. However, the masks are allowed within the confines of the convention, they must be take off when in the public areas. The weapons policy is very firm, though.

Kumoricon is another convention that happens, here in Portland. Athough, it is more geared toward Anime, than anything. Still, I've see some Star Wars costumes there.

The point is, that both of these conventions have fan tables available. This is where the information flow comes from. If we have folks at tables who are well-versed enough to interact with the public, and let them knowwho we are, I can guarantee you that we will expand our image of the public.

Truth be told, it was having a table at OryCon is how we have come to know Skot and Brandy. And there have been a few others that I have developed a network with, because of it.

Even if you aren't into the costuming aspect, it is well worth it for the promotion of the OFF!

OryCon sounds fun especially since i had to get rid of my Comic Con pass since i am not going to be able to fly back down to san diego because of the move. Do you know if we are going to secure a table at the convention.

Planning for having a table would make a great thread/meeting discussion. It's really early enough from the date to find out all the details.

We could also have a table at the Portland Comic Book Show Nov.15th, either on our own or as a combined effort with the local Costuming Groups. Imagine that, a multiple SW group get-together, in a cool setting such as a Comic Book Show. Now, that would definately draw in more new members, and it did work in the past when I hosted a table. Granted some of those members don't post anymore, but there were a few new members that were posting after showing up at the table to find out what the Oregon FanForce was and used the message boards.

How about signing up as a group to some charity walks that we have in the Portland Area?

Let's keep this going. It's generating great ideas that we could move forward on.

How about July 19th for a Meeting? Let's find a place that offers large group hosting but without an extra cost.

Should we start up a thread and start bouncing around ideas for meeting place, what to do and also get a feel for what date will work out better for us all.
