For some reason, there are pictures that aren’t showing up even though I know I uploaded them, so the numbering is off. At any rate, link to pics:

Vash Goes to Ohio

I blame it on ZOO. One night over IM she started talking about wanting to go somewhere to see real fall (i.e. the leaves on trees changing color) and that she thought it would be nice to go visit Tyria for a change instead of the other way around. I happened to like the idea, and Jedi Knight Birr signed on as well, so the discussion of “CarrieCon” was created. Unfortunately, ZOO suffered unemployment shortly before the trip was to commence, and issues popped up for Birr as well, leaving the Arizona native (i.e. me) the last woman standing for the trip. Since I had secured the days off from work pretty well in advance, I made my decision to go, secured a flight, and made the journey to Ohio in October.

Note to self: Ohio is cold in October. Perhaps should make future plans to visit in July or August.

My flight didn’t leave until 12:55 pm, but I didn’t get to sleep in much since I had procrastinated packing. It didn’t take long since I was only going for a weekend, but I made sure to pack long underwear and extra clothes for layering purposes so I wouldn’t freeze. I packed my usual anti-boredom stuff (cd player, books) and added one: drawing. I’ve been reading a book, “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” and the exercise I was on was to turn a picture upside down and draw it exactly as I saw it: upside down. I’d done one exercise like it already and was fairly impressed that the drawing didn’t completely suck. One drawing kept me busy at the airport. The second drawing I did on my first connecting flight didn’t turn out very well. The third drawing on my second connecting flight turned out fairly okay. I think I need to fly more often because while you’re at the airport or on the plane, you can’t go anywhere/do anything, so it’s a good time for reading/drawing/writing.

When I arrived in Ohio, I knew it without a doubt because I almost immediately felt cold when I stepped off the plane. Brrr. At Tyria’s, we stayed up to watch Monty Python Live on DVD before we had to crash so we could get up early for the “skull session” in the morning. I made sure to cocoon myself under the blankets to stay warm at night.

Erg. It’s 7:00 am Ohio time, which means it’s 4:00 am Arizona time. Crap. While I’m struggling to wipe the cotton balls out of my eyes, Tyria secures cinnamon rolls for breakfast. Hmm. Cinnamon. Her family and mentored one arrive a few minutes before 8:00 am, so we leave on schedule. We drive to OSU, park in one of the farther parking lots (money goes to the Special Olympics, I think?) and walk a very long walk in the cold to the building where the skull session was being held. It was cold and the walk was long. Inside the building, I warmed up pretty quickly, for which I was very grateful (and the hot chocolate also helped for which I was also very grateful). A “skull session” as best as I can describe it is a final practice for the marching bands of both football teams as a last chance to beat it into their skulls. Kind of like a school pep rally, only kind of cooler and more fun since people actually want to be there. When it was all done, I had a greater understanding and appreciation for TBDBITL (“The Best Damn Band in The Land” – OSU marching band).

When we get out of the skull session, the sun is shining and I’m actually quite comfortable in my layers. The walk back to the car is much more enjoyable and I took pictures of trees for ZOO.

After the skull session, we went to COSI for the afternoon. It’s a very cool museum, as it has a lot of interactive yet educational displays. I think I could have played with the laser-light harp (instead of cords you block a light to get the corresponding note) for several hours alone. I particularly liked the unicycle in the air (i.e. unicycle attached to a cord on the mezzanine level up above the first floor), which is saying something because I normally don’t like heights. I saw one person get stuck and the COSI people had a special dragging stick to get the person back to the platform, so it was very safe.

When we were done with the museum, we played “Perfect Ten” board game (you have ten questions and ten round to get all of the questions correct; it’s a lot harder than it sounds) before we saw the movie “Flicka” ( a girl and her horse movie; not something I’d probably see on my own, but it was actually pretty good, and Tyria was happy since it starred Tim McGraw).

Slept in a little since we stayed up late, plus the weather kept saying rain so there was uncertainty about going out to the Ohio Renaissance Festival. In defiance of Murphy’s Law (i.e. if we went to Festival, it would rain; if we didn’t go, it wouldn’t rain) I plucked up my courage to give the “go” sign for the Festival. Considering it was the last day of the festival, I figured that if nothing else we could at least head out that way and if it started pouring while we were driving or right before we got there, we could cancel and turn around. If we didn’t go, we wouldn’t know. I think a few little droplets hit the car on the way there, but it wasn’t raining when we got there and walked up to the gate, so we headed in.

With the cloud cover and slight wind, it was bloody cold, and it’s not just because I’m a native desert rat; unanimously it was declared cold by native Ohioans, so it truly was bloody cold. Won a cookie for being the crazy girl who came all the way from Arizona. It was a good cookie. Anyway, the swordsmen seemed to be doing fairly well, but I felt really bad for the guys in the toga party, the musicians, and the knights in armor. Brr.

Since we were hopping from event to event, we were out in the open and getting pretty cold. I certainly felt a lot better we started to duck into some of the vendor houses because it was at least out of the wind and slightly warmer. I wasn’t planning to do much shopping but I did want to see the artists and their prints in case something reached out, grabbed me, and told me it had to come home with me. I was doing pretty well at resisting temptation from one artist (from whom Tyria ended up getting a print for a friend) but Link ended up leading the way to my downfall. Yes, I said Link, as in “The Legend of Zelda” Link.

For whatever reason, I found myself slightly unaware and got a bit of a shock when I walked into one vendor’s house and saw behind the counter an elf. It took me a second to register that it was one of the artists dressed up as Link, complete with elf ears and dice earrings. There were four artists whose prints were up and I was familiar with two. The one that caught my eye the most was Lindsay Archer (I actually met her at Dragon*Con 2005 when she signed my Serenity RPG book where she did the art; very lovely lady). There was one print I was seriously thinking of getting and when I went looking for it in the box I found another I bonded with, and then evil, evil, Link pointed out if I bought three prints I would get a fourth free. Argh. I almost got away/talked myself out of getting *another* print since I had intended to get only one, but while I was waffling on the issue Tyria saw a friend of hers so I had a few more minutes to waffle and ultimately ended up getting another two prints (my third and fourth “free” print). Yay art. “Link” joked that if we bought all of his art we’d get the artist with them. It was somewhat tempting since he wasn’t a bad looking guy, and it became even more tempting when he pointed out he was a little pudgy and all he does is cook and clean. Hmm…I could live with that.

Before we left the festival, we made one last stop at Tyria’s friend’s shop to say bye. We ended up hitting the road a bit later than intended, and it was time to head to the Ohio Fan Force meeting.

At the meeting, “Star Wars” was discussed, conversation would stray off-topic, stray back on topic, stray off topic, etc. Pretty universal themes for most Fan Forces, I think. They were all very nice people. Quote of the evening from me that might have scarred a few people with dirtier minds than mine: “I know a few Canadians. They’re nice. They like to lick X-Wings.” We were talking about South Park and Canadians, and I know a Canadian who licked (or at least threatened to lick, I can’t quite remember for certain) the full-size X-Wing at Celebration III. Ahh, memories.

After the Fan Force meeting, it was off to Show Tunes for dinner and hanging out with more of Tyria’s friends. Had some difficulty getting a to-go box. Hmm. On the way home, I had a sudden yen for chocolate so we stopped at the grocery store to get a chocolate cake, thus securing possible breakfast for the next day. I ended up staying up late watching “The Island” because I’d never seen it and I wanted to see how it ended.

Staying up late = difficulty waking up in the morning. Fortunately, my flight left at 3:55 pm, so I had some time to sleep in before I had to burrow out from underneath my blankets. Tyria reported that it had in fact snowed that morning. I’m glad to have slept in. Before we went to the airport, we stopped at the grocery store where Tyria presented me with a box of buckeyes to take home ( as no trip to Ohio would be complete without buckeyes). Aww…

We got to the airport without any problems. I was sad to go, but alas all good things must come to an end so other good things can start. On my flights home I opted to write instead of draw. I had some difficulty getting home, first when my plane home had to delay landing, and second when the Super Shuttle was running really behind, to the point that I think I could have hopped city buses and gotten home faster (and cheaper). I arrived home safe and sound with lots of pictures, art, and stories to tell. Yay. Good times had by all, I believe.

I too blame ZOO. It was just going to be her, then one night she informed me Carol and Mac were coming too.

Anyway, you forgot the cookie!! Before the Swordsmen did their show, there was a cookie lady selling cookies. They decided they would give a cookie to the person who had come the furthest to get there. Of course LJC blew the competition away. Then they all looked at her with a ton of respect for coming out that day..well after they looked at her like she was crazy, which we all know she is. grin
