Geek Bowl Planning Thread

Now that ComiCon and CIV are out of the way, its time to start planning for Geek Bowl. For those that don't remember, we'd long talked about getting together teams made up of the various other sci-fi/fantasty fandoms, go bowling, and raise some money for charity. I've started seeking out various fandoms (the PA Browncoats are interested, I found some Buffy folks and through them may get some Highlander folks, and I sent an email to the Trekkies we met at ComiCon) So far, there seems to be alot of interest in the idea.
October is the target date for this (exact date needs to be set) and most likely the place will be Noble Lanes in Greentree (if a deal can be struck) If no one objects, I'll go out next week and chat with them about prices.
So, who wants to help plan Geek Bowl? Are we going to hook up with Big Brother/Big Sister (who do bowling fundraisers) or are we going to pick another charity (personally, I'm a fan of Heifer international, Pittsburgh Food Bank, and Habitat for Humanity). Can Bonnie hook us up with some LOTR folks and HP folks? What other fandoms can we find? I know Tradmic has also been playing around with the details on this, what all has she found?

I'll talk to you about it at the next meeting...
oh wait, you're not going to next meeting...
LOL
Can we do together for Noble Lanes negotiations? PM me any contact info you have for the groups and I will try to organize a group meeting with all the fandoms. When Jason and I did something similar for Battle of the Bands, we found that for discussion purposes only one person really needed to be designated for each group.
I guess I better get on task with this, huh?

I agree with having a seperate meeting just about this event. Maybe make it dinner and discussion somewhere? As for the charity I vote for Habitat for Humanity.

How can we raise money for charity this way? Should we have some raffles? Use part of them cost to bowl in the event?

We're having a meeting this Saturday (June 16) if you can make it. It's at Ross Community Center at 1 PM, and you can pm me for directions if you need them.
We really want to meet you, and it would be great to have more planning help!

Sorry to chime in late on this, been a busy couple of days for me and I haven't really been on line . . .
Tradmic and I chatted a bit on Friday night. She can correct any errors in memory I make on this (and I'm posting all this since I won't be at Saturday's meeting) Of course, all this can be re-evaluated and chatted about at the meeting . . .
Tradmic (with help from anyone intersted) will be in charge of getting the prize basket together. (since she did such a great job at ComiCon) The prize basket will go to the team that brings in the largest contribution to the charity. The prize basket will be 'fandom accessories' (snacks, gift certificates for video rentals, gift certificates for best buy and toys r us and restaurants, etc) Generic stuff that any fanboy or fangirl would like.
If possible, a second, smaller basket will be created for the bowling team with the highest score. Or we could just give them lovely certificates and medals.
Tradmic and Fluke will also investigate gaining 'non profit status' for SWAP.
Greencat (with help from anyone interested) will contact Noble Lanes and see what kind of deal can be made. I will also contact as many fandom groups as I can (this is where the help really needs to come in) Promo items will also be created (I have an idea for the logo, bowling pins that each have some different 'fandom' image on them) like posters to be hung in places the fanboys might hang out (comic book shops and bookstores)
I am also playing around with the idea of t-shirts to be sold (in advance) Tradmic, didn't you say you know of a place that will print stuff cheap and no questions asked?
It seems as if the charity we'll be supporting is Habitat for Humanity. Tradmic and I chatted and it would be better if we could get a local charity that will help us with promo. So I'll see if I can track down a local division of HfH. If they can work with us on this, shiny, if not we may reconsider the charity to find one that works more with us.
A date has to be set for this. I'm leanind towards Saturday October 13 or Saturday Oct 20. (Tradmic told me that one of those weekends is bad for her and Superchill, but I can't remember which ) I'm tenatively saying a start time around 4PM (that's after the kids parties which run from 1-3, if I reacall correctly) There's a party deal at Noble lanes that includes pizza and soft drinks.

Here are the groups I've thought of (lol, I don't even know if some of them even have official groups in Pittsburgh. I just brainstormed all the possible fandoms I could think of) I have sent tenative contacts to the Trekkers, Buffy fans (and through them Highlanders), and Browncoats. After we set a specific date and have specific details to give, I will start agressively track them down and contact them.
Any other fandoms folks can think of, or if you have specific contact info, would be shiny.
LOTR
Browncoats
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Anime/Manga
Trekkers
Comics (DC, Marvel, 'underground')
Gamers (roleplayers, computer)
Highlander
Stargate
Harry Potter
Dr. Who
Farscape
Heroes
Lost

I spoke with a rep from HfH and she was very enthusiastic about working with us on this! They can do all sorts of promo stuff for Geek Bowl and are willing to have a rep at the actual event to talk about HfH.
Tradmic also came up with some very spiffy ideas for the event, including a multi-fandom trivia challenge. w00t.

I will send a shout to the LOTR Pittsburgh group about this. I have yet to find any sort of organized Harry Potter group in the area.
BTW, Dan, great idea - the one fandom website. I'll be registering shortly.

I'm in the process of setting up a paypal account for SWAP, connected to the SWAP checking account. I've set up an email pghff@yahoo.com and requested an ATM/check card for the SWAP account.
That way, fees can be paid directly to the SWAP account. No more middlemen
