Stupid razor phone. Stupid Motorola. Stupid Cingular-AT&T.

Some of you may remember that last March my eight month old cell phone stopped working. After many hours on the phone and at the Cingular store, it was agreed that they would mail me a new phone without me having to pay for anything. So I was without phone for a few days and got the special joy of spending several hours on the phone negotiating with customer service plain

Now, six months later guess what? The new phone they sent me died. skull Can you believe that?? So, back to the Cingular Store. Of course the folks there can't do much more than verify, yes, its dead (which is all I expected them to do.) Then from there, I get to call Customer Service. Those nice folks tell me that since its more than a year from the original purchase the warrent is up and they won't replace the defective phone. They want me to just buy a new phone (with no discounts since I'm still in the two year contract) which would be around $250 plus tax, if I wanted another Razor. Cheapest phone they have is $180 plus tax. The Cingular manager (I've worked my way up the phone chain to Tom Gilliam, who was incredibly unhelpful and terse -- who explained that if they had to replace all the phones that didn't work, they would go out of business. Way to talk up quality of your product.) He suggests I call the manfacturer Motorola, since they are the ones who 'really sold' me the phone, even though I handed the money over to Cingular.

Grrr.

So, call Motorola and get to talk to a woman for whom English is obviously not her first language and who can't quite seem to understand that I'm calling from a busy and noisy mall kiosk, so I'm asking her to speak up every three sentences. After a very long drawn out conversation, she says I have 3 options:
1.Go to my service provider Cingular (I explain again that this is where I am calling from and they told me to call Motorola)
2. Go to an authorized service center (there are none in the Pittsburgh area, we discovered after she ran the zip code)
3. Mail in the phone to Motorola and after 12 to 15 BUSINESS days (about 3 weeks real time) they will repair and mail back the phone to me. Without charge unless they discover that the problem is something I did. plain

In order to do #3, she needs to take some of my info and give me an authorization number. Since I can barely hear her or understand her, I tell her I'll make a decsion and call back.

I now call back the Cingular Customer Service. Tell my long saga to the new person I talk to. After some questioning and negotiatins, she offers a $75 credit. I try to convince her to give me a $250 credit, the amount I would need to spend on a new phone, but she remains firm that $75 is as high as she's going.

I also ask about the cost of ending my contract early ($175) and the date that its over (July 28, 2008)

So, home I go. Think about it for a while, decide I just don't want to spend three days on the phone negotiating again. Decide I'm going to take the option of sending in the phone to Motorola and not have a phone for 3 weeks angry Call the Motorola company. I have to explain everything again, but at least I can hear this guy. However, this guy wants to run me through the 'basic re-start the phone tests' (is it charged, did you try to turn it on, is it the battery, etc) I go along with it for a little while before putting an end to it by explaining that I've already done all this and let the nice kiosk people poke around with the phone.

Start to make arrangements with new Motorola phone guy to send in my phone to get fixed. But this one says there will be a base $75 charge plus any other expenses to fix it because its out of warrenty. Which opens up a whole new round of negotiations. At long last, and putting me on hold a few times, its agreed that I won't be charged for repairing a six month old phone that doesn't work, even though I bought the original defective phone more than a year ago. rolling_eyes

To make a long story even longer, this means that I have no cell phone and will have no cell phone for several weeks. For me, that is a very horrible thing since I use that as my main method of communication. Also, I am one of those lazy people that have all my phone numbers stored in the phone instead of memorizing them. So I have no one's phone number except my parents and one of my sisters.

So, if you want to get ahold of me, you have to call my landline (PM me for the number) or email me.

Sigh. At least I know what I'll be doing on July 29, 2008. Switching cellphone companies and buying a new phone that is NOT a Motorola.

yeah, i hate hate HATE my kriffing Razr.

The little tab on the back right side that holds the battery cover in place is gone. Not too surprising since its about as thick as a strand of human hair.

can you stick your SIM card into a Go phone and just use that for the time being? i was thinking of doing that.

In my experience the only people who like their Razor phones are those that haven't broke them yet. A friend was looking for a durable phone and he ask about the Razor. I told him that I didn't think a phone whose main marketing point was it's thinness was going to be very tough.

the lousy part about that is i cant find any headphones that use a USB port! And the bluetooth headphones are twice as much as the phone

This happened to Marie, and she bought the cheapest phone on ebay that would work until the plan had expired.

When you do get a new phone, read the reviews on cnet.com and you should get a good overview on how people like it.

I feel your pain. And I hate to say it, but I won't be surprised if whatever happed to the phone is "your fault" and you will have to pay to get it fixed.

That's what happened to my Kodak digital camera. Supposedly, there was moisture in there. Yeah, surely I must have dropped it in the toilet, or left it out in the rain, or something.

It wasn't my fault. And don't call me Shirley. angry
