Is it possible for the Jedi and Sith to ever co-exist as two separate entities? The very nature of their differences in philosophy is often grounds enough to slaughter the other side. So what would it take to have a Jedi Order and Sith Order living side by side, and perhaps even working together. Both sides are useful and together might be able to accomplish otherwise unobtainable goals. Is this just wishful thinking on my part or is it possible that someday they might evolve to a point where they would realize the benefits of co-existing?

Well, they did co-excist in some way in the aftermath of the Great War, but I do not think that counts.

That seemed to be the premise of Fatal Alliance--in that book, the Jedi and Sith actually allied together to defeat a group of bat**** crazy droids which were rapidly taking over a planet. The Sith apprentice was working under a Jedi Master and a Jedi Padawan was working under a Sith Master, which was weird. At the end of the book, they went their separate ways again, but were co-existing in the same galaxy. Not peacefully, no, but under circumstances that seemed different from the Rule of Two "must scheme to wipe all Jedi out" Sith from the Rise of the Empire era.

I did read that book when it first came out. I also recall the brief alliance in the FOTJ series. Would is take a huge threat to force them together, then?

That was my take on it. A huge threat and/or a common enemy.

The Sith can't even co-exist with other Sith, much less anybody else.

The Sith need to be in command, enslaving and killing people, otherwise they wouldn't be Sith.
The Jedi need to protect the people from being killed, enslaved, otherwise they wouldn't be Jedi.

    So no.

Sure, right up until the moment that someone had something she wanted or stood in her way. We frequently saw her turn against the Sith in FOTJ to get what she wanted, including her best friend. While she might exist with them for a while it would eventually crumble because she would see them as an asset to be rid of when no longer useful.

In general they can't peacefully co-exist for any significant period of time.

It would take very unique Sith with open minds, the ability to control themselves and maintain their sanity and accept certain compromises. It doesn't seem like the Sith ways, or the ways of the dark side would allow this. It would sorta be "breaking the rules of Star Wars".

The Jedi and Sith represent opposite extremes, and they cling to those extremes to a degree unlike most "normal" people. For peaceful co-existence, they'd have to meet somewhere in the middle.

One of the Lost Tribe of the Sith stories, does end with someone bad at being a Jedi and someone bad at being Sith getting together and rejecting both.

But that seems like very much the exception.

Do you mean co-exist as in existing as institutions in the long term without going to war or as in a Jedi and a Sith enter a room, both come out?

I think it would depend on the type of Jedi/Sith. The average pre-banite grunt, particularly those from Malak or Vitiate's orders, would probably have alot of trouble dealing with Jedi without giving in to their urges to affirm their evilness. Like alpha-male meatheads at the LGBT Pride rally.

You would need a much more patient and tolerant Sith heading things to get a working relationship with Jedi, someone who doesn't feel the need to try to dominate every single person they meet. Palpatine did that for decades! The jedi didn't know, but still.

On the Jedi side it would be a bit simpler, I'd think that any Jedi should be able to tolerate someone they oppose without starting crap first. A Jedi who breaks into violence as soon as they see a Sith is kinda screwing up the whole philosophy.

There is no way that Jedi and Sith can make it through a long stretch of peaceful coexistence. There are a few rare special cases, but it was temporary.

    Or...
    "Leave it to Darth Beaver"
    "The Emperor of the Galaxy"
    "The Temple"
    "Parks and COMPNOR"
    "Everybody Loves Master Ray-Mond"
    "Seinfe'lya"
    "500 Republica"

As to the question... It depends.

Could the Jedi tolerate a Sith Lord who follows the laws of the Republic? If say a Sith Lord publicly announced his Sith religion and beliefs but otherwise followed every law on the books and somehow was elected Senator or Chancellor and while elected continued to follow the law and not make himself 'DARK LORD EMPEROR OF ALL THE UNIVERSE' and once his term was up gave up power. But all the while wore black robes, cackled manically, shot lighting out of his hands, and fed off of the hate in politics to fuel his dark side powers. Would the Jedi let him do that or would they kill him?

In terms of the Sith, could they tolerate some Jedi master spouting the wisdom of restraint and mercy in their empire?

Now could you make them co-exist? Yes. All it would take is a VERY strong police/military to enforce it.
