Wow. That was weird. He finally got around to what that was all about. He asked me to write a letter to the UN Army so he could get out of his contract. And when I said 'no' a second time, firmly, he stopped replying altogether.

This sounded weird from the start. I know it may seem mean to just not reply at all, but sometimes that's the best option when it comes to chatting with complete strangers.... especially the ones who want you to... write a letter to the UN Army.

Stopped watching when it got to the "pretend spirit." Yikes.

 

He said his 5 year contract is almost up, but if he doesn't leave Syria this month "on vacation", they are going to deploy him for another three years to Afghanistan. (I argued that they can't sign you up for a continued contract without your approval.) He also said the only way he can go "on vacation" is by having someone write to the "vacation dept" with a reason for him to leave. (I argued that having a daughter in England should be enough reason to go "on vacation" without having a stranger back you up.) (I did not mention, however, that, while Americans call it a "vacation", our soldiers and sailors call it "leave", short for Leave of Absence.) He would even come see me, he says.

Yeeaahhh.... You don't wanna come see me, pal.

It's a bunch of pathetic nonsense. If he wants a "special someone", then he should go meet someone in person. And if wants someone to help him get out of Syria, then he should ask family or a close friend instead of a stranger he's trying to hook up with. Or maybe he was trying to act all helpless about his situation in order to gain your sympathies... either way, he's a creep and you should let him be a creep all by himself, in his dark, cold room.
Frankly... I cringe at this kind of stuff.

Oh, I'm sure they start with asking for a letter before they ask for money.
I could smell the foul stench of it not too far into the conversation, but was engaging him to take the time and consider if there was a way to slap a warning label on his fb page. No go.

The best I could do is *not* poke too many holes into his story so he continued to be obvious to others.

(I'm a Navy brat. I make friends with everyone. But I'm also a rape survivor. Few people get close enough to do any damage. It's a careful balance. )

Kess, you rock. I used to be pretty naive while being friendly, then two people kinda ruined my life and took advantage of my kindness. I now also watch my back.

 

Me too. Glad I'm over it. You can't protect yourself from everyone, and, who would want to? I meet so many great people. And if my chat with a weirdo helps him or her learn how to be less weird, or just plain feel a little better about life, then I consider my mission accomplished. The predators though, that's different. I don't have a problem with that in real life anymore because of the way I carry myself. Only online, and it's rare. I don't outright call them on their bantha fodder, but I don't pretend to fall for it either. I just wish I could lure them to stop being predators to others somehow.

 

I feel the same way. I try to help as many people as I can, and that includes stopping people from acting in ways that can hurt others. It's difficult though because most people either don't see the problems or don't care.

 

We need to lighten things up a bit in the Cantina.
