    THE ANTAGONIST FINAL CHAPT. 7

Leia was shocked at the man’s audacity to show up and Han lurched to grab him, but
was stopped when the guard stepped between them.

“A bit impetuous, aren’t you captain.” Was Altine’s smug remark, standing just out of Han’s reach.

Dodonna moved to sit behind the report desk. “All of you have a seat.” He

instructed, but Chewbacca, holding his crossbow at his chest, chose to stand beside Han and Leia across from Altine.

“I understand, Captain Altine. That you have charged Captain Solo with kidnapping
    Senator Organa.”

“Yes. I saw him in the act.”

At that moment, several guards stepped into the room, weapons at the ready.

“Wait outside.” At the General’s order they exited the room and Dodonna turned his attention back to Altine.

    “Explain.”

“After the meeting, I went to the docking bay to check on something and I
saw Solo dragging the Princess by her arm up the boarding ramp of his ship.”

“That’s not true.” Leia yelled, jumping to her feet. Dodonna raised a hand to silence her.

“And why did you go to the docking bay ?”

Altine was taken aback by the question; how dare even a General question his activities. “Just to make sure things were quiet.. no one where they weren’t supposed to be.. checking the areas of the base for the start of the evacuation tomorrow.

    “Go on.”

“That’s it. I saw him forcing her into his ship.”

“Did you see her resisting. Screaming? Unwilling to go?”

“Well…no…I imagine she was very frightened. No telling what he was going to do.

Where he was going to take her. It would be quite a blow to the Rebellion to lose one
    of our commanding leaders.”

“Did you board Captain Solo’s ship?”

    “Yes, with guards.”

“And did you see anything there?”

“I was just in time …. he was forcing a kiss upon her.”

Leia winced, the horrible man was making a special and tender moment seem ugly.

    “And then what?”

“I ordered the guards to arrest Solo and hand-cuff him, to protect the Princess.”

“Did you remain on the ship after the Captain was escorted away?”

“Yes….uh.. just to comfort the Princess. To assure her I would never let that scoundrel
    near her again.”

Chewbacca roared at Altine’s last comment.

Han took hold of Chewbacca’s arm, slightly shaking it.

“Is that all you have to say about this incident?” Dodonna asked.

“That’s all there was to it.” Altine said confidently.

The General turned to Leia. “Now, I’ll hear your side.”

Altine sputtered, rising from his seat. “There’s no need to question her! I’ve
told you everything that happened. She’ll probably just cover for that pirate!”

Dodonna rose from his seat. “You will sit down and hear her tell of the event.”

    Leia took a deep breath. “It’s true… I went to Han’s….Captain Solo’s ship. He’d
told me in the meeting room he had something for me.”

Altine huffed. “I’m sure he did.”

Dodonna turned a stern gaze to the Captain.

“It was a snow-pod.” Leia opened her hand to reveal the slightly wilted pod.
The General nodded, familiar with the frozen plant.

“Did Captain Solo make any advances to you?”

Leia glanced at Han. “He didn’t make any advances. We were going to share a kiss.”

“What happened after Captain Solo was arrested and taken away?”

“Captain Altine grabbed me, tried to intimidate and threaten me, saying the Rebellion would never win what we are fighting for. That he would somehow force me to marry him so he could become the Prince Consort. All he wants is power and he’ll go to any lengths to obtain it.” Leia spat.

“She’s lying!” Altine jumped to his feet again….refuting the truth.

Leia continued. “Chewbacca rushed into the ship and dragged the captain away from
me.” Leia sat back down beside Han. Chewbacca shook his bow caster at Altine.

General Dodonna remained silent, thinking in the quiet tension of the room, then
turned his eyes upon Altine. “I think it best, Captain Altine, for you to remain in
custody until the evacuation is completed. You cannot accost Senator Organa in
that manner and be allowed to continue your command.”

“What about HIM accosting the Senator!” Altine objected. “He had his hands on her too!”

“If you listened to the Princess’ relating of the events, you’ll remember she stated she
entered Captain Solo’s ship willingly, no force …and that they were going to share
    a kiss.

    Altine ran thoughts through his mind….there had to be a way to salvage his position;
secure time to make the Princess see things his way and to woo her so together they
could command the Rebel Army…surely after they were married, she would give
him complete charge of operations. He’d show Dodonna then.

The General turned to Han. “Captain Solo, do you want to press charges against Captain
    Altine for a false arrest?”

Han looked at the man, who seemed to be in a world of his own, and shook his head
negative, uncrossing his leg and placing the booted foot on the floor.

    “GUARDS!!!” Dodonna called.

Five Rebel Guards entered the cell room.. awaiting orders.

“Put Captain Altine under arrest, secure and keep him confined even during the evacuation.” Dodonna gave the command.

“You can’t do that!!” Altine rushed for the door, slipping between the guards and
    into the corridor.

The others followed with Dodonna giving the order, “Stop him.” The guards pursued the running Altine.

The General, Han, Chewbacca and Leia watched as Altine headed for the docking bay.

He stopped abruptly, turned and drew a blaster out from under his coat. The guards took protective positions; flattening themselves along the corridor wall. Han shielded Leia and

    Chewbacca assumed a battle stance.

“You’ve blown your chance General.” Altine yelled. “I could have done so much for
this Rebellion, but if you don’t want my help, my abilities, the Empire will.
I know this operation, plans for further attacks, secret units of the resistance, where you are going to evacuate and set up a new base. Not only will they pay me greatly for this information, they will make me a commander!” Altine’s blaster exploded; the shot slamming the wall; spraying energy bolts over the General’s head; the others dodging the showering sparks. Han reached for the blaster on his hip, forgetting it wasn’t there.

The man continued running into the bay, his blazing laser fire hitting ships left
and right; he wanted to destroy and disable as many of the ships as he could.

Dodonna didn’t hesitate issuing the order no commander wants to give against one of his own. “Shoot to kill.” He said in a deadly calm voice.

Instantly the guards took firing stances and five bolts of energy sped through the corridor, finding their marks in the body of Vik Altine, slamming him to the floor. Altine’s blaster slid from his hand but he didn’t move. One of the soldiers, followed by the others, walked to the body, knelt and felt for a pulse, then raised and shook his head at the General.

“A sad ending to a sad life.” Dodonna commented shaking his head. “Take and give him a decent burial.” He instructed the soldiers. The other four knelt and raised the body, leaving out the docking bay opening.

Han moved to the General. “It’s not easy when one turns against a cause.”

Dodonna looked at Han. “I’m afraid the only one he turned against was himself.” They were silent for a moment, then Han reached in his pocket and withdrew the slip on which the code word was written. “I won’t be needing this.” He held it out to the General.

“What is it?” Leia asked. Han gave the code slip to her. “I was supposed to use this if I couldn’t make it back after the mission.”

Leia looked at the code card and smiled as she read it: THE BIRD HAS FLOWN.

“We have a busy day tomorrow. A new beginning.” General Dodonna said, looking
at the Princess. Better get some rest, Senator.”

Leia nodded, tiredly, and handed the slip to the General and began walking down
    the corridor to her quarters.

“General.” Han stopped him when Leia was out of sight.

    “Yes.”

“You know some of my past…my reputation.. and …my present, that I’m being hunted by just about everyone. I’ve only been with this Rebellion for a short time. Can you tell me why you trusted me more than one of your own officers about what happened in the Falcon?

For the first time, Han saw Dodonna smile. “I’ve seen your character in action, seen the ethics you display. You proved yourself to me when you completed the mission and didn’t take an easy out. You’re what this Rebellion needs.

Han told himself that the catch in his throat was a stifled cough.

“Besides,” The General continued, placing a hand on the Corellian’s shoulder and guiding him down the night darkened corridor, “I knew you would never harm the one with whom you were falling in love.”

    THE ANTAGONIST CHAPTER 6

Leia rushed toward Altine. “You have no authority to arrest anyone!” She said

attempting to pass the captain. Altine motioned to one of the remaining guards standing

by the hatchway. The man squirmed uneasily at having to lower his weapon to cover the

    Princess.

Leia raised an eyebrow. “So, now you are going to arrest me!”

Altine answered confidently. “I could. But I won’t. And in answer to your statement

that I have no authority to arrest anyone. You are mistaken. All officers have the

power to keep the base safe and that is just what I am doing by arresting Solo.” Altine

nodded to the two remaining guards. “You can leave now.” He said. “ I have everything

in my control.” Their boots pinged across the Falcon’s floor as they exited down the

    landing ramp.

Leia stood stock still while the man slowly circled her. “Being a woman, I can

see how you would be swayed into trusting that pirate. But he’s a cocky, self assured,

unprincipled, deceptive, traitorous, murderer. What I can’t understand is how General

Dodonna was taken in by him. He’s a very bad judge of character.”

Leia smiled. “I tend to agree with you. Apparently he was taken in by you as well.”

Altine cut angry eyes to the Princess, but said nothing.

“I have to do more than just have Solo arrested.” He spoke as if speaking to himself

alone. “All was going well until he showed up. You see, Princess, I have plans…plans

that include you. “I intend to marry you. Either by consent or force.”

    “What?

    **********

Walking beside the restrained Solo, each holding a cuffed arm, the base guards led

him to the holding room, pushing him into the small, shadowy cell. The guard then pulled

Han’s blaster from it’s holster and removed the cuffs.

“Sorry about this, Captain Solo.” One of the guards said. “But Captain Altine has

leveled a charge of kidnapping against you and you’ll have to remain here until this is

straightened out.” He told him as he closed and locked the barred door.

“I didn’t kidnap the Princess. Get General Dodonna.” Han requested. “And this can be

    straightened out now.”

    ********

“Let me leave.” Leia told Altine in a steady, determined voice. “Or you will be just as

guilty of ‘kidnapping’ me as you think Han is.” She turned to head for the hatchway

and was stopped when Altine caught her arm in a vicious grasp. Leia winced against the

    pinch.

“You see,” Altine began. “I don’t intend to spend my time here in this rag-tag Rebellion

just being an officer. There’s no power in that. But…by marrying you, I will be the

Prince Consort.. and what power and prestige that will carry. They’ll have to give me the

honor I deserve then. This Rebellion will be quashed… there’re no way this pitiful army

can win. You will lose your military and political titles and power, but you will always be

a Princess…. Royalty…. and I’ll be right there with you.”

He pulled Leia closer to him, caressing her hair with his free hand. She could feel his

breath on her face, but was not intimidated. He moved even closer… “Yes……” He

hissed and both were startled by a roar from the hatchway as Chewbacca rushed

in and grabbed Altine by the throat, jerked him off his feet; lifting him high.

The man struggled and gasped for breath.

“Chewie! Don‘t. We‘ll take care of this another way.” Leia yelled.

A growl from the Wookiee and a shake of his head told Leia he wasn’t letting

go. “Chewbacca! Release him! He arrested Han and we have to go see about

    him!”

The Wookiee barred his teeth in Altine’s face and gave a menacing growl as he slowly

lowered the Captain. Altine held his throat…. and gasping for breath said. “You ALL will

pay for this!” as Leia and Chewbacca ran from the Falcon.

    *********

“Han Solo is WHERE?” Dodonna exclaimed. “Yes, sir.” The guard answered.

“Captain Altine has issued a charge against him of kidnapping Senator Organa.

He’s been placed in cell three in the holding room.”

With an oath, the General donned his pants, tunic and boots, left his quarters and headed for

the holding room with the guard. “Where is Captain Altine now?” Dodonna asked through

    grimly pursed lips.

“The last time I saw him he was in Captain Solo’s ship the Falcon with the Senator.”

“You get other guards and come to the holding cell. You will have another arrest to

make.” The General directed. “Yes sir.” The guard left down another hallway.

    **********

Han was pacing the cell floor when Leia and Chewbacca entered the holding room.

“Leia, Chewie.” Han spoke, hands holding the cell bars.

“You alright?” Leia asked, rushing to the cell.

“Just mad as hell. You alright?” Han responded, his apprehension easing at her nod.

Chewbacca woofed a question and gave a laugh.

“Yeah, Chewie, this does feel familiar.” Han gave a wry smile and chuckled back.

General Dodonna entered the holding room and immediately gave the order for the

guard to free Solo from the cell. “Now.” Dodonna began. “Someone tell me what

    all this is about.”

I’ll tell you what this is all about.” Altine intoned, stepping into the holding room.

    MORE TO COME….

    THE ANTAGONIST CHAPTER 5

"I'd like to see you alone for a few minutes before the meeting.” Han approached Dodonna in the corridor. He nodded and led Han to a small ante-room. Closing the door behind them, Dodonna asked. “What’s on your mind?”

“Any clues yet to who might have cut the pressure hoses on the Falcon?”

The General shook his head. “We’ve questioned a few..even some of the newer cadets.” Dodonna inhaled an exasperated breath. “There were no prints or any other biological markers on the hoses. I even had the slits analyzed and compared with any other cutting instruments we know are used on the base with no match. The attack on your ship was either carried out by someone here or by a mechanical droid. If it was a droid, it wouldn’t attract any attention as they work on the ships when needed and are a common sight on the docking bays.”

“Any other ships vandalized while I was gone?” Han asked.

    “No.”

“Then that shows whoever it was is after me and may not pose a threat to this unit.”

“I don’t know.” Dodonna replied. “Your ship was used to scout a new base. Someone may have wanted us to remain here, waiting for capture.

Both men were silent for a few moments, then the General grasped the younger man’s

shoulder. “Time for the meeting. The sooner things are approved and we move from here

    the better.”

    *****

The low hum of chatter and noise greeted Dodonna and Solo when they entered the large meeting room. Han spotted Leia at the main table with the other leaders, then, after scanning the room, located both Luke and Vik Altine, then took a seat next to Chewbacca. The room quieted in anticipation as General Dodonna walked up the steps to the table and stood behind it.

“As you can see,” Dodonna motioned toward Han, “Captain Solo has returned and will present his findings about a new location for us.” He nodded to the Corellian and Han made his way to the table standing beside the General, then handed the holo to a technician.

The rebels watched in rapt attention as scenes of Hoth were flashed in the midst of them; a desolate looking place of vast snow fields, hills and ice caves…after a while, the images fading into nothingness. Dodonna rose from behind the table and stood beside Han, who had seated himself.

“Hoth is an environment that will be quite a change for us, but it will afford great

protection from the Empire and hopefully give us more time to reorganize. Dodonna

turned to the seven officials at the table. “All it takes is an affirmative vote and we

can begin our move”. He paused, then continued. “If not approved, we will have to remain here under the constant threat of discovery and another scouting mission will have to be

    undertaken.”

Those at the table put their head together and Han and the rebels watched as low whispers and animated gestures passed among the officials.

Quiet conversations began as the rebels started talking between themselves about what had been presented. All talking abruptly halted as Vik Altine stood up.

“How do we know this isn’t a set up?” Altine addressed General Dodonna. “Captain’ Solo could be leading us into a trap. I can’t believe the Council would consider any information given by this low life spice smuggler!”

Han moved to stand and the General placed a hand Han’s tensely corded arm halting him.

Altine continued. “If we thought the amount he’d expected to receive to bring Senator Organa here was costly, just think how much he would be awarded by the Empire if he presented this whole unit of the Rebellion to them… Vader wouldn’t hesitate to crow to the Emperor about capturing rebels without firing a shot!”

With patient authority Dodonna responded. “If that were the case, they would have followed him here and not waited for us to make a move. Solo himself would risk be captured or he would have never returned and told them where we were.”

“I don’t think we should make a move. The Death Star has been destroyed along with many

of the Empire’s ships…this may be the safest place to remain, since they think we were all destroyed in the battle. Just rebuild and get more technology to replace the destroyed pieces.” Altine spoke his own reasoning.

Dodonna didn’t mince words. “You don’t have a vote in this decision, Captain Altine.

You will adhere to any decision made by this Council and continue to conduct your

duties as usual and help where needed.”

Altine’s face puffed and turned blood red with anger, but he didn’t utter another word as he sat back down. Han watched the play of emotions across Altine’s face. He knew the man would make trouble again.

After some time, Senator Organa motioned to General Dodonna, indicating the Council

had made a decision. Han watched Leia’s lips move as she spoke, then the General made his way back to his place at the table and made the announcement.

“It has been decided by a unanimous vote that we move to the Hoth location and begin setting up a new operating base. All but the guards are instructed to return to their quarters and get a good time of rest. We will begin voluntary evacuation of Yavin at six hundred hours, base time.
After the morning meal, stay in the Mess Hall and receive further instructions about breaking down the base.”

Han rose and made his way through the maze chairs and milling people to Chewbacca and Luke. Giving them a big smile, Han commented to Luke, “Hope you have some long underwear… that place is even colder than it looks.”

Chewbacca growled to Luke, who gave a questioning look to Han.

“He says,” Han began, “HE doesn’t need long underwear.” The trio smiled.

“You said you wanted to see me after the meeting.” Leia sided up to Han.

“Yes, I did.” He responded, looking at Chewbacca and Luke.

“I’m off to my quarters.” Luke told them and turned to leave.

    Chewbacca growled and left also.

“Did I scare them off?” Leia teased.

“Nah,” Han answered. “Chewbacca wants to have one last game of vibra-leap with C3PO.”

They started walking at a casual stroll toward the docking bays. “How did your ship do in those brutal temperatures?” Leia asked.

“Just takes a little more time warming up. But there’s a huge ice cave system that will serve

as a hangar and the ships will be out of the winds.”

They continued toward the bays in companionable silence. “What I have to show you is in the Falcon.” Han told her.

Unseen to them, Altine had quietly followed the pair to the bays and watched as Han took Leia’s arm, guiding her up the boarding ramp of his ship.”

    *****

Leia smiled as she entered the Falcon’s lounge area..remembering her time here on their escape from Vader. She ran a hand over the upholstery on the lounge seat, then fingered the controls on the wall console. Han had gone to the galley to get something from the freezing unit.

“Hold out your hand.” He instructed upon returning. Leia did as asked and Han placed a green object there.

“OH..OH…OH…It’s freezing!” Leia exclaimed tossing the thing from one hand to the other. It was deep green, palm sized and had a pointed tip at the end. “What is it?”

“It’s a snow pod.” Han told her. “Cup it in both hands and see what happens.”

Leia covered the pod and felt movement, as if it was growing. She looked questioningly at Han, who placed his hands on hers, prying them apart. The pod looked as if it was swelling and an opening slit was appearing along the side. She continued to look at the pod as it opened and six, white, delicate, lace-like blooms fanned out in a circle from the center.

“They’re shaped like snowflakes.” Leia said.

“They stay in pod formation until warmed, then open up and spread out. They can be found on many very cold, snowy and icy planets. They are kept cold until you are ready for them to bloom. “

“Don’t they grow in the ground?” Leia asked.

“No, no ground for them to be in on those kinds of places.”

“Then how do more pods form?

“Each lacy piece is a seed. When they are warmed, pieces from the pod are blown by the wind or taken from the pod and it grows and forms a new pod on it’s own. It needs to be kept cold to grow.”

“Amazing. I’m constantly awed by the things found on different planets.” Leia commented.

“This is the first time I’ve seen a snow pod.”

Han drew closer to Leia, placing his arms around her. “It reminds me of you. Sometimes cold”, Leia smiled at that, “ but with a warmth underneath..hearty, able to bloom and survives anywhere under any conditions.” He lowered his head, intending to kiss her, but was stopped by a loud clamoring of steps coming up the boarding ramp and rushing into the lounge. Four rebel guards, blasters drawn and pointed at the couple took a stand around them.

Han pulled away from the Princess, not even time to reach for his blaster. “What the…”

Captain Altine was the last to appear as he swaggered into the Falcon’s lounge.

“ Cuff him and place this… smuggler… under arrest and take him to the base holding cell.”

    “Under arrest!!!” Leia shouted.

“Raise your arms, Solo.” Altine demanded, “Or you won’t have arms to raise.

Han slowly raised his arms. His mind racing, trying to figure a way to protect Leia

    from Altine.

“What are you arresting him for?” Leia questioned, frantic.

Altine gave a smirking smile… “Why, for kidnapping you.” He answered.

Two of the guards lowered the Corellian’s hands and place cuffs around each wrist, then

marched him toward the opening hatch of the Falcon.

    MORE TO COME…..

    THE ANTAGONIST CHAPTER 4

The Millennium Falcon dropped out of hyper speed into Yavin‘s orbit. “Looks pretty calm to

me” Han commented to Chewbacca; observing faintly flickering lights from the surface,

working the controls as the ship swooped over the twilight-shadowed surface.

Millennium Falcon requesting landing coordinates.” Han clicked off the com-link. “Wannna

let them know who we are. Don’t want ‘em taking pot shots at us.” He said, winking at his

    friend, who nodded in agreement.

“Welcome back, Captain.” Crackled the com-link. “Park in your usual place.”

Han flipped off the com-link. “You know the spot, Chewie. Take us in. I’m going back to

    my cabin for a minute.”

Nearly skillful as Han, Chewbacca deftly maneuvered the Falcon to the landing area and docking

    bays of the Rebel base.

The low thrum of the starship’s engines filled and echoed through the bays. Han had returned to the cockpit and slowed the ship; making a 180 degree turn to position for set down. Clouds of vapor shot from the vents as Han de-powered systems to stabilize the ship on the ground.

He sat at the controls for a moment, looking out the cockpit window at the activity which went into the operation of a docking bay This was one of the few times he‘d felt like he had a place to go to, a purpose to fulfill. He had begun to look forward to what the future held, instead of just surviving from day to day. There was Jabba, but he’d always been able to work around him, and he would again.

The opening of the Falcon’s hatchway and a growl from Chewbacca moved Han and momentarily the pair disembarked from the starship. At the hails and shouts of others in the bay, the Corellian waved a greeting and Chewbacca raised and shook his bow caster in ‘hello’.

Vik Altine stepped out from behind a stack of boxes into Han and Chewbacca’s path. “So… your mission is accomplished, is it?” He asked with a fake smile that was more of a sneer. Han and the Wookiee stopped in their tracks. “Fancy seeing you here.” Han said and Chewbacca grunted. “Just a welcome home.” Altine answered smoothly. “You’ve given us hope.”'

Han shuffled from one foot to the other and placed his hands on his hips. “The only hope you had, Altine, was that we wouldn’t be back.” Han spat.

The Rebel Captain was quite for a moment, then… “Now that you are back, you can give me the information you have and I’ll take it to General Dodonna.”

“I report directly to the General.” Han spat back.

“If you’re with the Rebellion… long enough… you eventually will be reporting to me.” Altine said with

    confidence.

Han pushed past the annoying Captain, “If I’m with the Rebellion long enough, that will never

    happen!”

Trudging down the hallway toward Dodonna’s office, they were stopped by a loud shout. “Hey! Han, Chewie!” Luke Skywalker ran to where the two stood, grabbing Han in a big hug and then latching on

to Chewbacca’s furry arm. “Am I glad to see you two!”

Han responded with a big smile. “Hey, kid. I missed you too. How have things been going

around here?” The trio started down shadowy corridor.

“Just packing…checking out the ships. All but one of the pilots is out of the Med Center.”

    Luke detailed.

    “How about the Princess?”

    “Busy as ever.” Luke supplied.

Chewbacca grunted a question of his own. Luke laughed, “No, Chewie, Threepio hasn’t beaten

your record on the vibra-leap game.”

Passing techs, mechanics, support personnel and officers greeted Han with smiles and Han noticed

an immediate change in their faces; a lessening of doubt and stress. Everyone had been depending on him to find a new place and his return signaled the scouting mission was successful.

Stopping in front of an archway, Han turned and placed a hand on Luke’s shoulder. “We’ll meet you

in the Mess Hall after I give my report to the General.”

    “See you there.” Luke responded.
    *****

A knock on the closed door was met by the response of “Enter.” Walking into the office, Dodonna

rose from his desk and met them halfway into the room. “Captain Solo, Chewbacca.” He shook hands with both and indicated, by a wave of his hand, two chairs which were situated in front of the desk.

“General, I think we’ve found a good place. It’s near the outer rim, but not into the Unknown Territory.” Han began.

    “This place have a name?”

“Hoth.” Han hesitated before continuing. “It’s not an ice planet, but it is cold and snow covered.

There is a massive cave system that would be good for the base with plenty of landing space for

all the ships. It experiences daylight and darkness.”

“A snow covered planet?” Dodonna was skeptical.

Chewbacca uttered a series of moans and grunts. Dodonna furrowed his brow, not understanding.

Han laughed. “Chewie says he liked it there. He’d never seen snow before.” Dodonna smiled.

He motioned for Han and the two searched the galactic map behind the desk.

“It’s certainly a place the Empire wouldn’t expect us to be. Desolate, cold.. on the outer rim.

They will continue to look for us, but it will take a long time to figure out where we are. The power

systems will supply all the energy needed to run the equipment and support facilities.” Han continued to give his point of the mission.

“We’re adaptable…this sounds like just the place. We can coordinate other operations from there.

Train other recruits that have joined us. Any life forms there?”

“None that I could detect.” Han answered.

Dodonna reseated himself and Han did the same. “I’ll call a special strategy meeting in an hour. You can give a more detailed report to the officers and personnel who will be coordinating the move. That will give you time to get your ‘land legs’ back.” The General finished.

“I’ll be there. I also have some holos I’ve taken so everyone can get a first look at the place.”

Han said before he and Chewbacca left.

    ****

Closing the door, Han turned and nearly collided with Vik Altine. He narrowed his eyes at the Captain. “Eavesdropping?” Chewbacca barred his teeth and growled.

“Just protecting the General.” He answered. “Who knows what you are capable of. You might have

designs to take over this operation yourself. You’ve been given entirely too much liberality concerning this Rebellion.”

“Go to Hell.” Han responded and started down the corridor to the Mess Hall, leaving an opened mouth Altine alone.

    *****

The Mess Hall was abuzz with most of the base population enjoying the evening meal. Han stopped at the entrance.. scanning across the tables in the room.

“Over here.” Luke called from a side table, standing and waving. Han gave a nod, then he and Chewbacca grabbed trays and made their way through the chow line. Grabbing a cup of kava, Han nudged the Wookiee in the direction of the table.

“Boy, this smells good.” Han said placing his tray on the table. “Sure get tired of the dehydrated meals on the Falcon.” Chewbacca had already dug into his plate of greens and herbs.

“A meeting in an hour.” Han told Luke between bites. “I’ll go over everything I found. Hope the

place will be approved. I’d hate to go out on another mission.”

“It’s been quiet here, so far, but each day, I wonder if it will be the one the Empire’s ships return.”

    Luke told Han.

“How about Captain Altine?” Han asked. “Any trouble from him?”

“No…none that I know of. I don’t have much contact with him.” Luke answered.

The trio ate in companionable silence, the drone of talk, laughter, clink of plates and scraping

    of chairs the only sound.

“Mind if I join you?” A feminine voice asked.

Han looked up, mid-chew, and almost choked. “Leia!.” He swallowed and quickly stood. “I mean, your Highness.”

“You had it right the first time… Leia.” Giving a nod for Han to seat himself, she sat by Chewbacca who immediately enfolded her in a Wookiee hug.

She laughed, “I’m glad to see you, too.” She said, glancing at Han.

“Well,” she began, “you find a hiding place for us?”

“I’ll know in about an hour.” Han told her. “At the meeting.”

“Yes, I’ve been told about the meeting and I’m excited to hear what you have found. We need to be

away from here as soon as possible. We’ve had to curtail our communication transmissions.

The Empire has to believe we were destroyed just as the Death Star was.”

Han took a drink of the kava and looked at Leia. “Will you come back to the Falcon with me after the meeting? I have something for you.”

Leia gave him a coy look and Luke smiled at the couple. Chewbacca had gone back for a second

    plate of greens and herbs.

    MORE TO COME…..

    CHAPTER 3

The glare of light on the surface of the planet was nearly blinding, the white ground
reflecting it as the Falcon skimmed over. “

That’s is snow, Chewie.” Han confirmed. Let’s find a place to land. Maybe an ice packed field, we can’t land on soft snow; …I have no way of knowing how deep it is. It could be two to fifty meters .” Han slowed the speed of his beloved ship and scanned the surface.

“There, Chewie. See that blue tinge to the ground? That’s either an ice island or the

snow has compacted.” The Wookiee gruffed and set the controls for landing.

“Ever seen snow?” Han asked his friend?

    Chewbacca shook his head ‘no.’

“Well, you’re seeing some now.” Han pulled back the yoke and the Falcon turned

and settled gingerly down where Han indicated… “We’ll see if we sink any.”

The ship stabilized, with no further movement.

“Keep full power on, Chewie, until we know what we’re dealing with.” Han instructed.

    The Wookiee shook his head.

Han checked the statistics of the planet; air quality, gravitational pull and surface

temperature. “Thirty-two degrees below zero.” Han commented. “I’ll have to get my

coat.” At a questioning mumble from Chewbacca, Han laughed. “No, I don’t think you

need a coat…you’re already wearing one!”

Making their way down the boarding ramp, Han took a moment for his eyes to adjust…

It seemed the whole world was white, the ground, distant mountains, sky… “We can’t stay

out too long.” He told Chewbacca, “We could become snow-blind in a short time.”

Han dialed some coordinates on his geo-scanner and swept the area for a

three hundred and sixty degree, quad-dreal three distance. “Not detecting any life

forms. “From what I’ve scanned the snow here is only three to six meters deep.” Han

    commented.

Chewbacca crouched down and grabbed a handfull of the white, powdery substance,

cocking his head in amazement as the snow filtered through his fingers. Pushing the

bandolier to his back, the Wookiee used both paws to gather snow and found it forming

a ball from the warmth of his paws. He rolled the ball around in his paws, then brought

it to his mouth to taste; sputtering from the cold. Han was still monitoring the readings.

A ‘whack’ on the side of the face, caught Han unaware and with snow sliding down

his cheek he looked over at his friend. “So……that’s how it’s gonna be.” He clipped

the geo-scanner to his belt, reached down, rolled a snowball and threw it

at the smirking Wookiee. Chewbacca formed another and the fight was on….

After a few moments, Chewbacca grabbed Han in a Wookiee hug, dropped him and

pushed his face in the snow. Rising and sputtering, Han laughed and punched his snow covered friend on the arm. They sat on the ground, catching their foggy breath. Both quiet, Han looked for a long moment at his friend. “I haven’t laughed like that in a long time.”
He admitted. The Wookiee shook his head in understanding.

Rising and dusting off his clothes, while Chewie shook the cold flakes from his fur,
Han said. “We need to look around a bit more. It would be great if we could find a cave or canyon.”

They re-entered the Falcon. Lifting, Han caught sight of an opening in what looked
to be a massive snow drift… “Let’s circle over there.” He said to Chewbacca.

The ship maneuvered easily under the Corellian’s hands. Eyeing the cavernous opening

Han said to his co-pilot… “Won’t know what’s in there unless we take a chance.”

With that, Han switched on the headlights and they flew into the opening…….

Slowing the speed, Han said… “This thing must go on for mili-quads.”

He scratched the side of his face, “They’ll have to paint those power generators
white so they will be camouflaged…”

Han moved the Falcon to a slow turn. “This seems to be the best place.” He told

Chewbacca. “I’m going to mark these coordinates so we can find it again on the rotation
    of the planet.”

Chewbacca watched out the cockpit window as the planet grew smaller and smaller as they flew away from it. If the Generals and Leia Organa approved the location, that would be the
new home of the Rebel Base.

    MORE TO COME

    CHAPTER 1

A gray-uniform-clad rebel stopped at the cavernous opening of the base docking bay and

scanned across the shadow filled, nearly empty facility, his gaze finally stopping on

who he’d been searching for. Watching the man, seated on a wooden packing crate, holding

a machine part on which he was working, the rebel slowly made his way toward him,

his clicking footfalls echoing in the quiet night.

The man looked up, noted the approaching rebel, then resumed his work. The footfalls

stopped next to him and the rebel spoke. “You’re Han Solo.”

Not looking up, Han replied, “That’s what they call me. And you?” He halted working,

looked up and spotted the two indicators on the rebel’s military insignia plaque he wore

    on his chest.

“Captain Vik Altine.” The rebel announced proudly. Han nodded and resumed working

on the part. When Altine remained, unmoving, Han asked without looking up.

    “Something else on your mind?”

“You call yourself ‘Captain‘, don’t you?”

“I Captain my ship”, Han pointed the tool toward the starship behind him, “The Millenium
    Falcon.”

“You’re the one who cleared the way for Skywalker to make the destroying shot into

that Death Star.” Altine drew his arms behind his back; a move that didn’t go unnoticed by

    the silent, ever observant Corellian.

“I find it ironic that one who isn’t even a part of the Rebellion, helped accomplish

what the rest of us have given so much effort to fight.”

Han removed the tool from the part; gazing up at Altine again. “You got a problem with

that? Seems like you should be glad you and this whole place weren’t blown to Hell by that

floating arsenal…you only had seconds to live.”

“As you said ‘Captain’, I do have a problem with that. I’ve been with the Alliance

almost from the beginning. I’ve worked long and hard to develop a relationship with

the Commanders and Senate, especially Senator Organa, to earn their trust and respect

and for them to come to depend on me. I’ll not be overshadowed by someone who is a

fugitive from another military,” Altine gave a sneering glance at Han’s blood-striped pants…

"you could even be a spy.” The rebel took a breath and continued. “I also don’t like it that

you have become close to Senator Organa in such a short time. I think now, you’ve

got your medal and commendation for the deed done, you should move on to whatever

    else it is you do.”

Han rose slowly before speaking. “You want a medal? Sounds like you

deserve one now…for boot or butt licking…which ever is the biggest.”

Altine blinked, taken aback. “I’ll take no insults from the likes of you.”

“I haven’t even begun to insult you, Altine.” Han spat.

The Captain stood silent and unmoving for a moment. “I’ll be watching you,

    Solo.” He spat.

Han leaned toward the man until their faces were only millimeters apart.

“Good. Maybe you’ll learn something.” With that, Han turned and walked into the Falcon.

    *****

Seated at a Mess Hall table with Luke, Leia and Chewbacca, Han tucked into the first

    meal of the day.

“At the meeting this morning, we’ll be discussing plans about our next move to set up a

new base.” Leia said after taking a sip of her hot kava.

“At least there will be time to make a complete move, not like an evacuation.” Luke

    commented.

“We’ll be sending some of the lower ranked officers to begin the set up.” Leia continued.

“Han, we want you at the meeting. You’ll probably be asked to do some scouting for a
    a location.”

“I know places that aren’t even on the star charts.” Han said laying down his fork

and wiping his mouth. Chewbacca gave a long mumble and rose from the table.

“Alright, see you later, pal.” Han responded.

“About some of these ‘lower ranking officers’ you’re talking about.” Han leaned back

in his chair, fingering his cup, “How well do you know them?”

Leia was caught off guard by the question, “Not a lot, myself, they’re under the

command of the Generals. You have a reason for asking that?”

Han caught his lower lip between this teeth. “Maybe later.”

‘PLANNING MEETING IN FIFTEEN BASE MINUTES’ the base com-link announced.

“I have to get some papers.” Leia said lifting her tray and rising. The men

grabbed their trays; Han following behind the two. Weaving through the maze of

    tables, Han tripped over an unseen, booted foot that had been thrust into the walkway;

the tray flew out of his hands and hit the floor sounding like a loud shot.

All conversation and activity in the hall stopped instantly and all eyes were drawn

to the source. Han picked himself up from the floor as service people quickly gathered

up the tray and utensils. He brushed his hands together and turned in the direction of the

boot which now had been removed.

“Lose your balance, Captain?” A seated Altine commented looking around the table at

the two other officers seated with him. “Better have yourself checked out, not a good

    condition for a pilot.”

Han gave the officer a scathing look, and made his way out of the Mess Hall.

Luke met him at the door. “What happened back there?”

“Nothing I can’t handle.” Han told him, his hazel eyes cutting back at Altine.

Luke took a quick glance into the hall. “Let’s get to the meeting.”

    ****

When Han and Luke entered the Strategy Room, the chairs were filled with

soldiers, pilots, technicians, support personnel and Alliance officers.

“Over here.” Luke pulled at Han’s shirt sleeve and led the way to a couple

of empty seats near a far wall.

General Dodonna clasped his hands together. “ I think all are here. Now we can begin.”

Han caught sight of Princess Leia seated on the opposite side of the room and their

mutual smiles were caught by the hooded eyes of Vik Altine.

“With the destruction of the Imperial Death Star we have a short reprieve.

It won’t be long before a new fleet is dispatched, hoping we feel safe and

remain here. So, we begin now to scout a new location for our base and major

operations. I’ve asked Captain Solo and his co-pilot to man a scouting mission….”

“Why him?” A question interrupted from the room and heads bobbled around to

    find who had spoken.

“We have re-con pilots that have done that in the past.”

Dodonna and others spotted the speaker just as he finished.

“Captain Altine.” The Commander began. “ Captain Solo has navigational experience and

the freedom to move about the galaxy without arousing suspicion.”

“How do we know he’ll come back or find a secure place? He’s a mercenary. He’d

easily sell us out for money. It’s known around the base that he received a lot of money for

    bringing Senator Organa here.”

“He gave all that money back!” Leia couldn’t contain herself.

Han clinched his fists, “I’d like to take him out in the alley behind Orcie’s Cantina

for just five minutes.” He hissed to Luke.

Dodonna spoke, unflustered. “He could have just as easily held the Princess for

ransom and not delivered her here.”

    That quieted Altine.

The Commander pointed to a projected wall map of the galaxy. “We want a

place that would seem uninhabitable. We need time to gather the outlying factions

and troops. We coordinate from here after Captain Solo brings back reports and we

    choose a site.”

“Couldn’t he just transmit the coordinates here and be on his way?” Altine interjected.

The sound of a cough, rustling of papers and shuffling of feet broke the awkward

silence as people glanced at one another.

Not showing that Altine was trying his patience, Dodonna spoke as instructing

a fledging recruit. “Radio transmissions could be monitored or intercepted. We need

    the information in person.”

Princess Leia knit her brow, wondering what was going on. Why was one of the

officers objecting to Han’s participation and help?

Dodonna continued. “We lost some X-wings and there are wounded who must have

time to heal, but we need to be on our way as soon as possible. Captain Solo will

leave on this scouting mission in the next three base hours.”

Dodonna continued instructions for quite some time without further interruptions.

    ****

Filing out of the Strategy Room, soldiers talked of maneuvers and tactics, technicians of

upgrades, and service personnel of packing up the base.

“Want any help on that mission?” Luke asked as he and Han ambled toward the docking

bays. “Nah, kid.” Han responded. “Chewie and I can handle this. You may be needed with

the other pilots.” Han gave a wiry smile. “Besides, I know a little about breaking up and

    moving a temporary military base.”

“Han, Luke” Leia called, sprinting to catch up with them. The two men stopped and

    waited.

“What was all of that about back there? Leia asked breathlessly looking at Han.

“You mean Altine?” Han quirked an eyebrow.

“You know him?” Leia continued to question.

“Yeah, we’ve met.” Han responded unsmiling shifting from one foot to another.

“Have you done something to anger him?” Leia asked; she’d already learned

    Han’s sometimes quick, unpredictable temper.

“Sure have.” Han answered her. At Leia’s questioning look, Han continued.

“I saved his life.” The Corellian walked away, leaving Luke and Leia to gape after

    him.

    ****

“Have you checked those supplies, Chewie?” Han called from the cockpit, where

he’d been monitoring systems, performing maintenance procedures and readying the

    Falcon for take-off.”

    A companionable growl answered him.

“Then make a list of what we need and we’ll go to the Supply Depot.”

Continuing to check out various components on the ship’s computer board, a red signal

began to flash accompanied by a metered buzz. A concerned look crossed the Corellian’s

face and he began flipping switches and punched for a readout.

“Chewie!” Han called….the summons was met with a growl. “Don’t worry about

finishing….you can do that later. I need you up here now!”

The Wookiee ambled from the supply hold, shaking his shaggy head in frustration.

“Here.” Han passed the printed readouts to his co-pilot. “You said you checked those

pressure hoses on the outside of the ship.”

    Chewie mumbled a short quip.

“Well, you must have missed something because all eight are showing loss of power.”

Han rose from his pilot’s seat and headed for the hatch. “Let’s go check them again.”

The two made their way down the boarding ramp and took a walk around the starship.

“They all look intact, Chewie, but something’s wrong. Reach up there and check the

couplings.” The Wookiee did as asked and assured Han that all the hoses were tightly

    connected.

“I don’t understand it.” Han knit his brow as they came around to the hatch of the

ship again. “Go get a lifter.”

Han paced in front of the ship, waiting impatiently for Chewbacca to return. He didn’t

like delays and couldn’t figure out why all of the couplings showed loss of power at

    the same time.

The Wookiee returned, pulling a cargo lifter and fit it under the first hose housing.

Han mounted the lifter, holding onto the railings as Chewbacca operated the controls to

raise him to the right level. He once again checked both ends of the couplings.. Tight, just

as Chewbacca had said. Then he ran his hand along the spiral length of the hose.. his

fingers catching on an open slit in the hose.

“That’s it.” Han confirmed to himself. He unscrewed both ends of the couplings and

took a closer look at the slit…it was smooth ..not like a tear or blow-out. “Let’s check the

rest .” Han said to Chewbacca, and they performed the same examination on the others,

finding the same result….slits that looked like well defined cuts. Han’s suspicions were

confirmed. These cuts were not wear and tear.. someone had deliberately cut the power

hoses. His anger growing, Han pulled the long corded hose over his shoulder and told

Chewbacca; “Let’s go see a man about a hose.”

    ****

Han figured out just where to find Captain Altine; in the Officers Lounge.

They received some curious glances as they walked down the dimly lit corridor.

The sight of a angry Corellian and shuffling Wookiee were something to which the base

    personnel were becoming accustomed.

“Altine!!!” Han called as he entered the lounge and slammed the door behind him.

The Captain turned at the call of his name. “Yes?” he answered, rising from his chair.

Han walked up to him and shrugged the hose from his shoulder and put his fingers

through the slit… “You know anything about this? I’ve got seven other pressure hoses on

my ship in the same condition and it’s not a coincidence.”

“Why are you coming to me about it?” The arrogant Captain asked.

Other officers in the lounge stopped talking and listened intently to the exchange.

“Process of elimination.” Han hissed. “You are the only one that spoke against my

    carrying out this mission.”

“You accusing ME of tampering with your ship?”

“Either you or one of your waats you got to do dirty work for you.”

Chewbacca gave a menacing growl and Altine backed up a step.

“Captains…” Dodonna had heard some of the exchange and wanted to avert a full-blown

confrontation. “Tell me the problem here.”

“I have eight power hoses that have been cut…not completely cut through, like some

amateur would do…just far enough to make them look operational from the outside, but

once we were in space and flipped the pressure switches…no pressure…you’d have

two dead pilots.” Dodonna shook his head understanding and looked at Altine.

“I didn’t do it. No one has any proof that I had anything to do with it.” He nervously

    sputtered.

The General once again glanced at Han. “I have to agree with Captain Altine..unless you

saw him in the act of vandalizing your ship.” Altine gave a greasy smile.

Han shook his head negative. Chewbacca gave a huff.

“I agree it is not coincidental that all your hoses are cut, but the important thing now

is that the damage was found and can be corrected. This will certainly be investigate further.

I’ll get some technicians to replace those hoses immediately and you can be on your way

with not much longer loss of time.”

Han glared at Altine one last time. “Come on, Chewie, let’s go get those supplies while

    that’s being done.”

“Fine.” Dodonna said placing his hand on the Corellian’s shoulder, glad to have solved

a bad situation. “You’re ship will be ready soon.”

The pair left the Officer’s Lounge and headed for the Supply Depot.

Immediately Dodonna lost his conciliatory air. “Captain Altine, if you know anything

about this,” The General lifted and inspected the split hose, “ it will go easier for you if you

    speak up now.”

“General Dodonna, how can you say that? You know how dedicated I am to the Alliance.

I would not thwart any attempts guarantee our safety.” Altine blustered.

    ****

“Han!” Leia called back after he had passed her without a glance. He stopped, turned and

walked back to where Leia stood. She was looking at her chrono. “I thought you and

Chewbacca would be gone by now.”

“There’s been a complication.” He told her. Chewbacca stood silently by. “Found all the

power hoses on the Falcon cut.”

“What?” Leia was surprised and confused.

Han took a deep breath. “Apparently by someone who wants this mission to fail or

to have two dead pilots. Keep your eyes open, Leia, there is either a traitor or a spy on

    this base.”

    END OF CHAPTER ONE...

    CHAPTER 2

Han and Chewbacca ambled down the Falcon’s slanted boarding ramp; they’d finished

stowing away supplies needed for the scouting mission. The whirring grind of lifter motors

could be heard along with the clang of metal as technicians worked fitting new power

hoses around the starship. Han paced, his steps sounding in the bay, slapping his flight gloves

into his hand, anxious to leave.

“Hope we don’t have any more trouble.” He said to Chewbacca, who was seated on

the wooden crate calmly adjusting the tension on his bow caster.

“Almost ready to leave, Captain?” Dodonna asked as he sided up to the Corellian.

“Just about.” Han answered, tucking the gloves into the blaster belt and placing hands on his

    hips as was his habit.

“I have a code word for you.” The general held out a metal slip to Han.

“Use this if you cannot make it back for any reason.” Han took the slip, looked at it,

smiled and slid it into a vest pocket. “Alright.” Han agreed.

At the sound of the hydraulic lifters being de-powered, Chewbacca stood as a technician

    called; “All ready, Captain Solo.”

“Looks like we’ll be on our way now.” Han told the General.

“Maker’s speed Captain Solo.” Dodonna gave a salute to the Corellian. “Your

help is invaluable to us.” Han nodded and followed Chewbacca up the boarding ramp.

Standing where she could just see into the docking bays unobserved, Princess Leia uttered

to herself as she watched when the Falcon took flight. “Come back to us, Han….to me.”

    *****

The blinking flight lights of the Falcon blended with the starry canopy of space as the

starship glided among them. Han sat at his console studying images of star systems,

checking the gravity, air quality and habitability of planets near the system rim he thought

suitable for the relocation of the Rebel base.

Chewbacca mumbled a warning to his friend as he handed him a cup of kava.

“I’m not straining my eyes.” Han replied, blinking as the Wookiee settled in his

over-sized pilot’s chair. “We’re racing against time to find a place before the Empire

discovers we’re still on Yavin.” He took a sip from his cup.

(“We?”) Chewbacca mumbled, looking at Han.

“Yes,” He replied, “We’re part of this whether we want to be or not. I don’t have any way

of knowing what’s taking place, back there. It’s bad enough for them to fight an outside

enemy, but Altine seems determined sabotage their efforts. He could even be brazen enough

to harm the Princess. I can’t understand why he would be so blatant in his actions.”

    Chewbacca shook his head.

Han flipped to another image on the screen. “I don’t want to go into the Unknown

Regions..that would draw immediate attention when ships started heading there.”

The com-link crackled with an order, “Starship..identify yourself!”

“What the….” Han jerked, startled, a lock of hair falling over his forehead, the radar had not

    indicated an approaching ship.

Chewbacca craned his neck to see out the cockpit window, looking for the source.

“Right side, Chewie.” Han said as he flipped closed the star chart screen.

“Second and last request starship.” The com-link crackled again. “Identify

    yourself…now!”

Chewbacca woofed impatiently… “Alright..I’m gonna answer.” Han spat back.

“Captain Casser Denyar of the Orion Star…just finished delivering cargo to

Oliah and taking the long way home.” Chewbacca gave his partner a quizzical

look and Han shrugged his shoulders. “Good a story as any.”

After a few moments, the com-link crackled again “Cargo ship Orion Star is not on the

    registered list.”

“I just bought the ship a while ago.” Han continued what he thought was a ‘logical’

    explaination.

“You know, Captain, that ships are supposed to register immediately.”

“It may be registered under another name. I renamed the ship when I got it.”

“Give me your Galactic Identification Code Number, that will clear you. The

code goes with the ship no matter who owns it.”

Under his breath, Han instructed Chewbacca, “Coordinate for jump to hyperspace.”

    “The code, Captain.”

    “I’m looking for it.”

“It will be in plain view on the computer console.”

“Ready yet?” Han question the busily working Chewbacca, who gave a nod of his head.

“If you can’t give us the code, Captain, prepare for in-flight boarding.”

“Hit it, Chewie!” Han ordered, and in the blink of an eye, the Falcon ‘disappeared’.

“Don’t know if they will follow us at this speed, but you can be sure they’ll be contacting

someone. I’ll set course for sector eight..they’ll assume we’ll be flying in a straight line.”

The Falcon slowed and made a ninety-degree left turn, then resumed hyper speed.

    *****

“Gonna stretch my legs, Chewie.” Han said, rising from his seat and making his way

back to his cabin. Once refreshed, Han stood by the light near his bunk and removed the

Code/Slip from his pocket. ‘This could be my way out’, he thought. ‘All I’d have to

do is send this and fly to wherever I wanted, be done with the Rebellion and not

look back. They would never know what happened. It was tempting…. then

another thought intruded…..’but I would never know what I might have left behind.’

A call from Chewbacca sounded through the com-link in the cabin. Han tapped the

Code/Slip in his palm, then pushed it back into his pocket and left for the cockpit.

A questioning growl from the Wookiee met Han as he settled in his pilot’s chair.

A quick glance out the cockpit window, then a closer look…… “Is that a planet?”

Han switched on the star chart console, reading coordinates from the navigator.

“I”ve never seen a white planet.” Han commented. “You, Chewie?’ At the

shaggy shake of the Wookie’s head, Han said. “It’s either sand or snow. Let’s

go check it out.” Han took the controls and the Falcon decended for a closer look.

Uh-oh, I don't like this Vic Altine guy! I am not sure if he's the culprit here, but there is definitely something wrong about him, even if it's just envy. Han has all the right to be slightly paranoid about him, I don't even blame him for it.

Also, is it me or does this guy have a sliiiight unrequited crush on Leia, too?

I read this on my way to work on a mobile phone and nearly missed my bus stop. Because this story sucked me in so much. Can´t wait to see more of that certain person. He is not family of Armitage Hux, is he?

Lynda, you usually add a new chapter in a reply to the topic. This might confuse some people.

I loved everything about this chapter, though - Han's little maneuver and jump in the hyperspace when it got tricky was epic. On top of it, the scene with Chewbacca just sitting there with his crossbow was a nice detail. :)

Millennium Falcon requesting landing coordinates” Han clicked off the com-link. “Wannna

let them know who we are.

Han had returned to the cockpit

and slowed the ship; making a 180 degree turn to position for set down. Clouds of vapor shot from the

vents as Han de-powered systems to stabilize the ship on the ground.

The opening of the Falcon’s hatchway and a growl from Chewbacca moved Han and momentarily the

pair disembarked from the starship. At the hails and shouts of others in the bay, the Corellian waved

a greeting and Chewbacca raised and shook his bow caster in ‘hello’.

Vik Altine stepped out from behind a stack of boxes into Han and Chewbacca’s path. “So… your mission

is accomplished, is it?” He asked with a fake smile that was more of a sneer. Han and the Wookiee

stopped in their tracks. “Fancy seeing you here.” Han said and Chewbacca grunted. “Just a welcome

home.” Altine answered smoothly. “You’ve given us hope.” Han shuffled from one foot to the other and placed his hands on his hips.

Everyone had been depending on

him to find a new place and his return signaled the scouting mission was successful.

Stopping in front of an archway, Han turned and placed a hand on Luke’s shoulder. “We’ll meet you

in the Mess Hall after I give my report to the General.”

    “See you there.” Luke responded.

A knock on the closed door was met by the response of “Enter.” Walking into the office, Dodonna

rose from his desk and met them halfway into the room. “Captain Solo, Chewbacca.” He shook hands

with them and indicated, by a wave of his hand, two chairs which were situated in front of the desk.

I also have some holos I’ve taken so everyone can get a first look at this place.”

Han said before he and Chewbacca left.

    ****

Closing the door, Han turned and nearly collided with Vik Altine. Han narrowed his eyes at the Captain.

“Eavesdropping?” Chewbacca barred his teeth and growled.

“Just protecting the General.” He answered. “Who knows what you are capable of. You might have

designs to take over this operation yourself. You’ve been given entirely too much liberality concerning

    this Rebellion.”

“Go to Hell.” Han responded and started down the corridor to the Mess Hall, leaving an opened mouth

    Altine alone.

    *****

The Mess Hall was abuzz with most of the base population enjoying the evening meal. Han stopped at

the entrance.. scanning across the tables in the room.

“Over here.” Luke called from a side table, standing and waving. Han gave a nod, then he and Chewbacca

grabbed trays and made their way through the chow line. Grabbing a cup of kava, Han nudged the Wookiee in the direction of the table.

“Boy, this smells good.” Han said placing his tray on the table. “Sure get tired of the dehydrated meals

on the Falcon.” Chewbacca had already dug into his plate of greens and herbs.

    THE ANTAGONIST CHAPTER 5

“General, I’d like to see you alone for a few minutes before the meeting.” Han approached Dodonna in the corridor.

I liked Chapter 4, but pray what has happened to Chapter 3? [face_thinking]

Was it stolen by nasty hobbitses? [face_nail_biting]

They stole it from us. Sneaky little hobbitses. Wicked, tricksy, false!

    THE ANTAGONIST CHAPTER 5

“General, I’d like to see you alone for a few minutes before the meeting.” Han approached Dodonna in the corridor.

Are you on "Archieve of our own" by the way? [face_thinking] Because of your way to post a new chapter. [face_idea] Unfortunately, it does not work this way on the boards. [:D]

Anyway, I am glad that this is back on. You always lure me back in when I am keen on leaving fanfic for good. Because you write fantastic characters. Your Han is the best. Complex, with a great fragility inside and a rough, "scruffy" surface.

    I can't figure out Altine's motivations...
Is he an Imperial spy working from the inside to destroy the Alliance?
Is he just jealous of Han? Where was he during the battle of Yavin?
Is he sweet on Leia so Han moving in automatically made him an enemy?
Or maybe He just doesn't like Han because Altine has the death sentence in 13! systems.

He arrested Han and we have to go see about him!”

The Wookiee barred his teeth in Altine’s face and gave a menacing growl as he slowly
    lowered the Captain.

Altine held his throat…. and gasping for breath said. “You ALL will pay for this!” as Leia and Chewbacca ran from the Falcon.
