I wouldn't have minded more Tatooine if Lucas had kept the planet the way it was pre- special edition, meaning less crowded, and no Mos Espa or podracing.

Could have been handled with a mention. Didn't NEED to see Tatooine. In conversation he could have told us that he had been born there, but was sold off or whatever.

He wasn't born there.

I think it certainly has its shortcomings, but it gave us some brilliant moments in the entire saga as well. The final duel towards the film's finale was spectacular and was the first time we ever saw a true lightsaber duel (where all participants were in their prime).

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. I know a lot of people found the podrace long and boring, but I found it incredibly exciting. I think it also sets the stage for the rest of the saga quite well. I also liked how we were introduced to the characters (Anakin and Obi-Wan in particular) and how we get to see them in a different light. I also enjoyed see the early beginnings of the empire as Palpatine slowly seized power. Overall, big thumbs up here!

I voted yes; I loved it when it first came out and still think very highly of it. Seeing it in theaters as a 13 yr. old, it just blew me away. It was to me what ANH has been for so many of the "original" generation of fans. I had become intimately acquainted with the originals, but TPM just seemed so much more interesting, exciting, "cooler" to me. It felt like Star Wars had been refreshed in a way for a new era/generation of people. I have no real complaints against it.

the phantom menace isn't great...at all

The good bits such as the trade federation bouycott (is that how you spell it?)could have been squashed into a half-hour space at the beginning of AOTC.

Anyways...who jar-jar ruined it..he ruined everthing that Star Wars stood for tongue

I know a lot of people didn't like him or had problems with him in the script, but why did he ruin everything Star Wars stood for?

figure of speech lols

nah he was just annoying. TPM may have been a good film without such a flamboyant character as I don't mind gungans in general or in fact the plot of TPM...

Yeah, Ive softened towards TPM over the years and appreciate it a lot more then I used to, but I still cant overlook Jar Jar. Every time he's on screen I just want to punch the TV. He's so over-the-top and unnatural it takes you out of the movie.

mmm....thats true.

Thing is, I don't like the young Anakin either - I feel that his introduction when he was of such a young age was possibly inappropriate. However, if we saw Anakin for the first time in AOTC then there would be questions about his mentor and his acceptance into the Jedi order. Plus it makes the impact of Anakin's change into Vader heavier on the audience as they see how much he has changed i.e. innocent child to what is essentially a murderer.

Man I'm arguing with myself laugh

I watched TPM last night and I loved it. Its my favourite of the PT by far. It has its problems iii grant you however for me it has a great feel to it. It also has the best acting performance in any SW movie.... thank you Liam Neeson.

Mixed bag for me.

Anyway, with time I've come to aprecciate it more and more.

TPM has very good qualities (the pace of the action, the not too complex story and the final duel wich is great) but has some annoying things too (jar jar, gungans, the childish dialogue of Anakin, and I know he is a 9 year old but it's way over the top and the pod race).

Even though I still like TPM more than i hate it.

I liked it plenty, but it's problematic. As far as I'm concerned, there are three great SW films (III, IV, V) and two crushing disappointments (II, VI). TPM? I honestly can't categorize it: Lucas got so much right, but somehow couldn't bring himself to rein in the excess. Inconsequential bits like the Gungan theatrics, Nass's lip waggling, and Anakin's cockpit dialogue unfortunately accumulates. And this weight compromises the film entire.

If there was ever a SW film to benefit from a Special Edition...

EXCESS, you say? drg4, I wrote a term paper last semester about, specifically, the ingenious role of "excess" in TPM!
