Until the release of ROTS on 5/19/05, I would like to discuss AOTC chapter by chapter on the DVD. There are 47 chapters to discuss over the next eight months, excluding Chapter 1: Opening Logos, Chapter 2: Attack of the Clones and Chapter 50: End Credits.

Each discussion will last 5 days. At the end of 5 days, the following chapter will be posted.

Chapter 42: Yoda's Cavalry
DISCUSSION: March 12, 2005 - March 16, 2005
DVD TIME INDEX: 116:16 - 117:40

Synopsis:
The Jedi are surrounded. Padme looks up and notices Republic Gunships led by Yoda entering the arena. The ships sweep through the constricting battlefield blasting all enemies in sight. The battle continues. Yoda orders a perimeter to be made around the Jedi survivors. The gunships land in the arena and the clonetroopers disembark and battle the inferior Federation droids. The Jedi climb onto the gunships and leave the arena as the troopers create a diversion in fighting. Dooku takes off in defeat as well. Threepio and Artoo remain in the Geonosian arena. The protocol droid tells his counterpart that he has had the most peculiar dream. Boba Fett enters the arena floor, picking up his father's helmet and pressing it against his head in sadness and anger. END OF CHAPTER

Opinion:
A transition scene to get us out of the Geonosian arena and onto the plains of a greater battle. The story arc of Yoda going to Kamino, though not seen on screen in complete in a big way.

I like this chapter despite its shortness. Originally it seemed odd that Padme would be the one to spot Yoda and the gunships, but the more I think about it, the more it works as a whole. Nice way to clean out the arena of enemies and allow our heroes to escape. Though the score is reused so much, it still had a good to mediocre impact on the feel of the sequence.

The other moments in this chapter besides the clones coming were pretty good. So many times we see Dooku escaping in defeat and this is the first of many before the end of the film. The Artoo and Threepio scene was actually good. Threepio's dialogue is still not there, but so much better than "This is a drag," like in the previous chapter of this film.

Ending the chapter is such an subtle emotional moment with Boba. The color, the recurring music, it all works. Makes one ready for the originals any day to see what Boba turns into. Good, short chapter.

Agreed 100% Moleman, great stuff, especially Boba's moment with Jango's decapitated head.

Entertaining stuff.

Seeing Boba pick up his dad's helmet is great when you think about it as part of a potentially ongoing arc for his character, but unfortunately what we see here will be the end of his character's development until about two movies later when he joins Vader's hunting squad. "Boba, my you've grown." "So have you Vader, grown more evil I mean." tongue And even then, he's just Jango V.2 with uglier clothes for some reason. Interesting.

All mustafar breaks loose as our heros fight the evil robots. Will they survive? What will boba do now? Tune in next time! grin

I felt quite sorry for poor Boba in this scene. I do love this scene. One of my favourites behind all of Kamino.

"The Eagles are coming! The Eagles are coming!" silly

The last reel was immensely enjoyable.

Hearing Yoda speak military tactics was surprisingly fun as well.

great scene, when I first saw AOTC I didn't know how they would escape, then when Yoda flies in!!! woot!!! first time we see Yoda in an action scene 'around the survivors a permiter create' excellent stuff, the sfx look merely OK to me, a lot of the geonosis battle has a 'smoothness' that even TPM's land battle didn't have, but its OK. Thank the lord Threepio's wacky mishaps have come to an end, now I can remove the pillow from my embarrased forehead and a little resolution to the whole Jango/Boba storyline, kinda makes you wish Boba's ultimate demise was a bit more...noble but hey its Star Wars... its all good!

This scene is why I loved SW as a kid. Not because of the dialog. Not because of the mythology. But RAW ACTION!!! My favorite shot in this scene goes by rather quickly. Yoda gives the command "Around the survivors a parameter create." The P.O.V is above the gunners torrent. A clone trooper shoots a laser cannon in an arc fashion a totally destroying everything on the ground!!!!

Was it just me, or did anyone get a rush seeing how Yoda's ship landed in the arena?

Yeah. That was great. happy I was like "Go Yoda!"

I wonder why Boba picked up his father's helmet rather then his head. We could have had a great Hamlet scene there. tongue

Picking up a decapitated head could've upped the rating and also wouldn't his father's head traumatize poor Boba.

Either those Gunships have some sort of gravity thing
inside (But then why would Padme have fallen out?) or
Yoda has stick 'em on his feet. He's just standing on
the edge of the thing like he's fishing off a pier and
he's got that goofy 'Waz up, Cuz?' look on his face.

I'm assuming that it has a low gravity feild, esp. for the upper atmosphere, and when the ship is jerking about to keep the troops from falling out. Unfortunately, it seems the ship got hit hard enough to knock Padmé out.

I love, LOVE, LOVE it when the Republic gunships take off from the arena--it's probably one of my favorite visual moments in the entire saga.
