Qui-Gon Jinn and the end of Duel of the Fates as mentioned above.

For me one of the best parts was early in the beginning of the movie when we first get to see Jedi draw their lightsabers holding their breaths to stave off the poison gas, and the subsequent action as Qui-Gon is hammering at the door to get at the traitorous Neimodians makes me feel like a kid with glee. We saw a real Jedi for the first time.

"Have you ever encountered a Jedi Knight before, Sir?"

"Well no, but....seal off the bridge!"

"That won't be enough."

Fantastic sequence, the whole situation grin

The single best thing (in my opinion) in TPM was the Duel of Fates, Darth Maul, the unique lightsaber that he wielded, the duel itself, Qui-Gon's death and Obi-Wan's reaction, etc. Everything that made up the duel and the duel itself was without a doubt the greatest event in TPM.

Agreed 100% grin

Duel of the fates was the single best thing in TPM, but I have to agree with Veloz that Palpatine's scheme was amazing! Qui-Gon was a fantastic character... so sad when he died...

I loved the part where Obi-Wan goes ape**** on Maul after he wounds Qui-Gon. That was some very rapid-fire sword work, and it was done extremely well.

To me, the duel and the music were obviously the best parts, but here are a few other things that I like:

* Naboo and Coruscant... I loved those planets.

* The introduction of Sidious, with the Emperor's theme underneath

* "Wipe them out. All of them."

* Liam Neeson was a terrific character. Shame he didn't get a voice cameo in ROTS, in would have helped explain some things.

* That look on Obi-Wan's face after Qui-Gon was killed and he put his gaze on Darth Maul... good acting there.

* The setting of the Duel. The name of the room escapes me, but all the catwalks and the energy beams, nothing beats that, not even ESB.

Duel of the Fates was pretty splendid. dancing

But I think my favorite part was Anakin leaving his mom. That was done really well, and the music was great and really set the mood.

The character interactions in the Tatooine passages. The PT is often derided as "chilly"--which may have been intentional, what with its theme of disharmony--but there is a family unit to be found, at least in this film. Qui-Gon, Shmi, Ani, Padme, Jar Jar, the Droids, and crazy Watto are just terrific together. Sorta reminds me of the old ANH crew.

Shame they were broken up so soon.

I agree. I love the Tatooine parts of the film, they are some of the best parts of the entire PT; a nice ensemble cast interacting and discovering who each other is in a great, real-world environment with real character to it, plus theres some terrific imagination at play and that ANH-ish feeling of "effervescant giddiness" as Lucas puts it. The performances here are suprisingly good for the PT--watch Padme react to Qui Gon telling her he doesn't care what the Queen thinks because she's not around; thats the sort of natural and human sort of behavior that is sorely lacking elsewhere, and this particular moment is all the more complex because of the identity secret.

in the PT, the lightsaber fights\duels are the best parts, so the Obi\qui-gon\Maul fight was so awesome...could've done without anakin saving the day. *rolls eyes*

I’ll meet you halfway. It’s true that this vibrancy doesn’t filter through again till ANH, but the running theme of dissolution actually validates a number of the stolid performances and interactions. When we see Anakin gestured into Palpatine’s taxi, we’re being told that the boy is taking his first steps into a darker, not larger, world.

I’d argue the only scenes that necessitated that ol’ Tatooine soulforce were those involving Anakin and Padme in AOTC; and I’d contend that three-quarters of the problems many have with the PT could be traced to this ill-conceived courtship. Once Qui-Gon dies, he takes the TPM family with him. Only…we’re not given any real substitutes. Anakin and Padme simply aren’t as sympathetic as they should be. On his part, we needed more shyness, and less creepiness. On her part, more wispiness, less droning. More slowdancing and tortured glances, less cornball dialogue. This stuff practically writes itself. Or so I thought.

I would have to say that it's very close between the podrace and Duel of the Fates. I know a lot of people didn't like the podrace (thought it was too long, boring, etc.) but it kept my attention the whole time. I thought it was excellently done and the CG and sound mixing was incredible.

I thought the reinvention of the Sith Lord image was a cool touch ie Darth Maul. Everything from his clothing, to make up and demeaner, his ship, the assassin droids, his duel bladed lightsaber and even his lack of dialogue were all very intriguing and threatening. His fighting style was great to watch and even his cold expression when he slays Qui Gon was hard to not to appreciate in terms of character. I think the only thing i didn't like about Darth Maul was the way he died. I think a much more convincing death was an important element missing in TPM and that hurt the climax. I think if Obi Wan had struck Maul on the way up the shaft rather than after he landed, it would have been a much easier sell. Or even a completely different end like Qui Gon distracting Maul while Obi Wan was ascending the shaft or even speeding up the ascension. Anyway there is atleast half a dozen ways the death could have been made more convincing, but other than that Darth Maul was a perfect touch in TPM.
