The look of Darth Maul in my opinion was the best single thing in TPM. I never really thought about the idea of the Emperor having a Sith name let alone a Sith apprentice before Vader. A demon with horns, rotted teeth, and yellowish eyes fit perfectly yet I never saw it coming.

Maul's look is absolutely perfect because it fits the idea of an ancient evil or archetype: devil with horns.

He's perfect as Palp's first apprentice. Also that he's the first in a millenium to surface. He has that ancient symbolism about him.

Music, settings and the portrayal of the galaxy in a "more civilized age".

While Darth Maul sparking up his lightsaber in the hangar brings a huge grin to my face, it's the Coruscant section with Palpatine's scheming that gives me chills. I love watching how he manipulates everything to get what he wants - you have to admire the skill and cunning with which he does it. IMO, TPM is an intelligent and thoroughly enjoyable movie (Binks aside), made all the more so by the subtlety of the political subplot.

The thought that people might not 'get' Palpatine never entered my mind when TPM was released. I thought it was obvious Palpatine, Sidious and the Emperor were all the same, but thinking about it, part of me would have liked to not have known and thus have been suprised in ROTS. It would have given a different slant to the PT on first viewing. I do wonder if I would have appreciated the politics less and found Palpatine less engaging, not knowing what he was.

The lightsabre fights. Sorry, but pretty much all the rest of TPM (with the exception of Neeson, MacGregor and MacDiarmid's acting) is execrably bad.

Nice call, I think most people overlook Neeson's performance, he is a fantastic actor, too bad he was limited to just one film.

You can dispute this, but not for nothing, Liam's performance wasn't Oscar caliber, neither. He's got alot of Gall saying the films have gotten a little silly when his acting didn't help the situation, nor his constant looking into the camera. At best, he was average, and his Irish accent (I'm no bigot, mind you) got in the way sometimes that made him sound like a mumbler. I mean, what exactly does he say at the beginning when he was speaking with Obi-Wan. "You must, mumble, mumble, something about the force. huh? I had to turn on closed caption, and it sounded nothing like what he said in the sub-titles. Now, I like Liam and his character Qui-Gon very much, but not one actor in this film acted sincerely, not even Neeson.

Oh, and my favorite part of the film was the scene with Obi-Wan discussing with Qui-Gon about Anakin being a danger, which is right before they leave again for Naboo. Besides Obi-Wan's loyal service and duty to the Republic and Jedi Council, it shows the compassion of Qui-Gon for someone who had nothing, and Anakin's humbleness and respect for others.

Liam Neeson. I really enjoy watching him as Qui Gon. Definitely one of the best actors in the saga!

Obi-Wan Force Pushing the 3 droids in the beginning of the movie.

Swimming towards Gungan City.

A little later, On Naboo, Qui-Gon putting away his Lightsaber with style after striking down the droid.

"NOT FOR A SITH. This is my apprentice, DARTH MAUL."

Obi-Wan cutting Maul's Saber in half.

I liked that Lucas attempted to explain the force on a biological, science fiction level.

If only they had thought the whole thing out more thoroughly

He doesn't seem to be directly looking into the camera.

Duel of the Fates (the duel and the musical piece in tandem). The rest of the movie to me was either political drudgery or slapstick humor that didn't belong there in my view. I felt Duel of the Fates was sort of condescendingly downplayed by the glancing cuts to the Battle of Naboo (in space and with the Gungans) and the cheap end, but very good nontheless. I also felt Liam Neeson was great and one of the better actors of the PT... besides making Obi-Wan look more presageful and prophetic by nature, I feel Qui-Gon's death was a tad abrupt.

I liked Coruscant a lot too as a planet and visually, but it didn't serve much to me besides being a plot point for Padme and the senate. The Jedi Temple and Sidious could have done just as well on another planet to me, though it was a visual spectacle for the time in my view.

Either way, I felt DOTF was the highlight and was, hands down, the best single thing in TPM.
