I always just assumed that R2 didn't know Anakin was Vader...in the OT.

I figured from what we've seen in the PT that R2 probably knew about "The Jedi's betrayal" because of veranda scene and Anakin's openess with the droid. Like DS said, r2 was on Alderaan when Vader arrived in Dark Lord. He probably could've pieced two and two together. Obi Wan, Yoda and we can assume that Bail heard about Anakin becomming Darth Vader, so Bail probably gave him a good enough hint that Vader was what Anakin became.

It has been suggested that, at some point, the story of the SW saga is told to the Whills by R2-D2.

My question is: how much did R2 really know about the saga? He wasn't present for certain crucial scenes ( and we logically wouldn't expect him to be ).
For example: Did R2, in the end, know that Vader was Anakin?

R2 was not at the Jedi Temple when Obi-Wan and Yoda watched the holorecordings.
Also, it does not seem that R2 witnessed much, if anything, of the Mustafar duel... although I don't know the range or power of his photo/audio receptors. At least we know that he is more than a mindless robot, since Anakin's last command to him is to "stay with the ship", and if he had followed that command strictly, he would have spent the entire OT on Mustafar.

Perhaps R2 came to the conclusion that Anakin was killed.

It seems like the only way R2 could have known various things about the saga is if Luke told him at some point ( after ESB ).

I find it notable that, in ROTJ, when Yoda confirms that Vader is Luke's father, R2 is not peeping in the window as in ESB. Instead, he's some distance away, right next to the X-Wing.
This again brings up the issue of how good his "hearing" was, but I find it strange that while R2 is supposed to be telling the SW story to the Whills, from film evidence alone he never found out that Vader was Anakin.
