And yet ROTS was the best-reviewed of the PT. "Star Wars is back!" and that kind of thing. It had the most OT-like feel, which is what many old-time fans, including 30something film critics, had been wanting.

But I digress. This is about AOTC... which many critics definitely despised.

Yup, but my point is that where SW is concerned, the critics have a history of going to see them determined not to like it. (Not all, but certainly some)

It's not just that Hollywood caters to the powers that really control our country, it's also because Lucas snubbed them and told them to go screw themselves, and was still able to be one the most successful filmmakers ever.

Feel free to ignore this dynamic, but it does exist.

And yet the average critic is a sucker for independent films. How do you reconcile that with your assertion that critics despise Lucas because he dissed the Academy by pulling out of the Directors' Guild and creating his own non-Hollywood studio?

I think it's based in the trend among critics to reject action-adventure movies and big summer blockbusters, regardless of who made them or how good they are.

Independant films made by people who shun the unions?

I don't think it's as clear-cut as that. I went to a pre-release press screening of ROTS, and pretty much all the reviewers that were there with us really didn't want to be there. They'd made up their minds before going in that they weren't going to like it. So they were hardly going to produce fair non-biased reviews.

Yeah, but say you hated the first Saw movie, and since it was a big hit when the second one rolled around your boss told you you had to review it. You'd be less than thrilled, too.

The name is supposed to be bad though. It's a reference to the old serials like Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe, Radar Men From The Moon, and Commando Cody: Sky Marshal of the Universe.

I never got this. As if The Empire Strikes Back isn't totally cheesy and awful. Or Return of the Jedi. They are all pulp titles. They are all Attack of the 50 Foot Woman.

A few of the titles are certainly a bit cheesy but Attack of the Clones is no worse than the others.

All of the movie titles are done in a camp serial style. The AOTC title evokes a sense of an over the top epic battle. Exactly whart the Clone wars were.

This is quite understandable. If you saw Alien Versus Predator, thought it sucked, saw Alien Versus Predator 2, thought it sucked even more, and then were forced to go to the premiere of Alien Versus Predator 3--would you be optimistic??

Plus, I would say that the PT started with a contrary scenario, critics lined up to TPM ready to see a terrific chapter in the pre-eminent mythology of the 20th century.

The Empire actually DOES strike back, and fairly early in the film. And they continues chasing the heroes throughout the film as an extension of this striking back.

Attack of the Clones describes one plot point which, in itself, is a fairly minor deus ex machina in the film's plot. The clones themselves have so significance as characters in the way the Empire does. Naming Episode II after the clones would be like naming IV or VI after the Death Stars or I after the droid army. Sure, they're important factors in the plot but ultimately they're not what the story is about, on either a macro or micro level.
