My understanding is that at the time of ROTS he's 60.

60 eh?Would make alot of sense...looks about that age...Ive always wondered if he was a bit unusually old by ROTJ because of his power with the force or dark side.

SOTE states that he "isn't really even that old" between ESB and ROTJ. He'd be about 80 there ...

Here's my stupid question of the day:
Would Palpatine have died of old age?
Would he use clones or Sith Alchemy to keep himself alive?
Just curious.

Only way to answer this is to go EU...The Dark Side was consuming Palpatine/Sidious. He had been preparing clones to move his spirit into when his body failed him. In Dark Empire, he tells Luke that his death on the Death Star II was not his first, but I think its entirely possible that he was just lying to Luke, and the Death Star II was indeed his first death. He did succeed in transferring his essence into clones, and was only finally defeated when he was forced to possess the dying body of former Jedi Empatajayos Brand. So, he would have died, whether by the Dark Side consuming his body or through old age, but he would use clones to keep himself alive.

actually, I thought he was several hundred years old, using the power of the dark side of the force to keep himself young until he could devise a plan to take power....his disfiguration was caused by his need to draw energy from those forces which were masking the aging process, causing him to age tremendously in the course of several seconds

For whatever it's worth, the Wook refers to his death in ROTJ as his "first death".

Leeland Chee has said Palpatine was lying about it not being his first death if I remember correctly.

I didn't know someone could die from the Dark Side consuming them. I just thought the Acolytes tended to die from old age, or from being killed by another Sith or Jedi.
I think Palpatine is at least mid 80s or early nineties when he dies in ROTJ.
Plus he might have been going senile too, which is why I think he slipped in making his assumptions about Luke and Vader. The younger Palpatine would have been extra careful in assuming and would had Plans B, C, etc., just in case. His senility made him easier prey to his own arrogance and ego. He just went ahead full thottle without thinking through things like he did when he was younger.

I think it's more arrogance at his success rate and having been on top for 36 years rather than Senility.

Damn, so Sidious was going to try his best to stay alive forever...sort of...I guess(?)
I gotta step up my EU reading.

Im pretty sure Sinister's calculations are correct. Wookiepedia gives him a birthyear of 82. BBY, which adds up and makes sense. And also makes him age 86 at death. I personally dont believe he ever returned. It defeats the purpose of the ROTJ's victory.
