First off dont get me wrong I like all 3 of them. However i just feel GL should have let someone else take charge. As far as creating goes GL is top dog there's no question about that. He should have employed someone who's passion was concerned with making a great movie and not worrying about how the special effects looked.
As a result we are left with 3 movies which could have been twice as good.

Thoughts anyone?

Quite true, unfortunately this topic is headed towards lockville very fast, Papa Lucas is not allowed to be questioned at all over here.

Don't worry about it, a very valid point and who knows this place could surprise me and not lock this topic, but in general you can't question Lucas here, and that is very, very sad.

Lucas wanted to be more hands-on which is consistant with his actions in the OT other than Empire if one takes into account the fact that Lucas directed parts of RotJ and may have directed even more than has been confirmed if you take some of the rumors seriously.

I do agree that having a 'Kersher' type of director for the PT may have been a better choice.

Great topic!!!

Lucas; for all his brilliance, had no real plan heading into the PT. Despite his absurd claims of having this all planned out since '75. The PT suffers from HIS lack of vision and his unwillingness to admit that he can't write dialogue OR direct. He doesn't care what fans or critics think... that's because he's only about the money. If he hadn't gotten taken to the cleaners in the divorce from Marcia, the PT more than likely never would have been made.

IMO, he missed her subtle touch more than Kasdan or Kershner.

Lucas keyed on all the wrong things, and edited the PT with an eye for more style than substance. The result is a disjointed story, unfinished plots and weak character development. But... in TPM we got to see who made 3PO, we got introduced to midichlorians, we saw podracing... then in clones, we saw more politics, cow-surfing and let's play twister-in-the-grass, plus we were treated to some awesomely-bad love-scene dialogue. The coolest thing about AOTC, is that the maker couldn't even be consistent with where Anakin's arm got whacked-off.

And ROTS; after the edits and re-shoots, was mostly sizzle, with VERY little steak.

Thanks to all of you who took the time to reply. You all make very valid points. Has anyone heard anything about the new TV show?

Someone else is directing the Clone Wars but I think that I heard Lucas is directing at least the first 100 episodes of the Live-Action series.

If that is true, I'll never watch one single episode.
I think I'm done with buying SW-stuff after SW-TFU comes out.

I know he's at the least directing the first season, which would be considerably less than 100, but I think I remember hearing the 100 number at C3.

Lucas wrote one or two drafts for each film, after ANH. Only with TPM was he the sole writer and that was due to everyone telling him that the script was fine. When he asked Kasdan, he said it was fine. Frank Darabont was asked to take a pass, but he said no. Tom Stoppard was not credited for ROTS. As to directing, he only turned it over to Kasdan because of the stress he endured doing ANH. Kasdan didn't come back because he was content with one film and due to the DGA taking issue with Lucas. Marquand was hired because he wasn't a member of the DGA. But when it came to the PT, after he did TPM and had fun with it and wasn't stressed out, he choose to do the other two films. If ANH had been as easy as the PT had been, and stress free, odds are that he would've done all six films.

As to directing the live action series, I'm not too familiar with that. I do know that he's written the series overview, but other writers will take a hand.

Actually I am fine with questioning Lucas and always have been. I agree with this to a great extent. I too feel that Lucas at most should have done TPM. Then he should have turned them over to someone else to direct and finish the screenplay. I don't agree at all that this was his story alone to tell. I wish AOTC had been directed by Frank Darabont and ROTS directed by Steven Spielberg, myself. Now I can only dream about how much more amazing the films would have been if he'd done that.

Really? The OT was his story too but he let others help direct and write...

Considering George and Marcia divorced in 1983, if he was still struggling with money in 1997-8 as he developed and filmed TPM, something would have been very, very wrong with his finances. After 1983, George would still have earned millions and millions in royalties from ticket sales, merchandise, VHS tapes, the emergence of the EU, video games, his stake in ILM, etc, I doubt he was ever hurting for money, even after giving Marcia her share. George Lucas hasn't had to work for a living in a long, long time...that he chooses to just means he doesn't want to sit at home all day playing Playstation or XBOX. He did the Prequels because he wanted to, not because he financially had to. He hasn't had to do anything for additional financial gain in over two decades.
