In my opinion you are ignoring quite a bit to arrive at that minimalist interpretation.

Sorry but it's still case closed for me. I said i'd take other peoples POV on JJ into account but mine is still unchanged. JJ still = biggest fool even seen in a SW movie IMO and that will never change. There's nothing to be learned from him except that in a trilogy if you're not popular in the first one you wont be in the next two very much.
The ironic thing is, the reverse is also true. Heck, OT-Fett went from bit-part, background dude... to progenitor of the whole Clone Army.

Now if Lucas went back to ROTJ and swapped-out Gungans for Ewoks, then I would say JarJar was one w/ ze-gods. Since I don't see that happening, Jar Jar is no closer to the ze-gods than 3po was...

Andre Gide would probably be horrified to discover his quote being abused in the way it has.

In order for an interpretation to be valid, it must be demonstrated that there is some merit in either the deliberate intention of the author (ie that Lucas intended this reading) or else some reference point that shows that this interpretation is consistent or allowable within the context of the work itself. This interpretation fails all of the above. It comes across as a "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" approach where any possible connection is made as long as there is some slim thread, no matter how unlikely, inconsistent, or illogical it may be.

I think it's pretty academic to note that Jar-Jar is the simple character meant to relate to those in the audience who aren't up on all the political mumbo-jumbo.

It holds up even if Lucas didn't intentionally make this connection himself. It's both consistent and logical.

Still, I think it's pretty likely he did.

So, it's been 9 years. When are all those millions of kids who loved Binks going to be heard from? I want to know why they didn't buy the toys. (but as we all know from Pokemon and Power Rangers, kids NEVER want toys of the characters they like.)

I heard them at all 30 plus theatrical showings I went to during the original release and the Christmas re-release. They all laughed at Jar-Jar's antics.

I can speak from my own experience, my son liked Jar Jar until he was about 6 years old. After that, I think the action figure was burried at the bottom of his toy-box. Qui-gon was, is and probably will always be his favorite PT character. I think its because of the green lightsaber... anyways, I think he played with Jar Jar (I didn't buy the toy, my ex wife did) tongue because Qui-Gon 'played with him onscreen' if you will. He was a favorite at bath-time, and that was about it.

Binks may have helped him lock-in to the saga at an early age, but once he got a little bit older, he lost interest in that 'bit-player'... Jar Jar only held his interest for a short period of time.

No, zombie, no. That's ridiculous. Authorial intent is for people who can't think for themselves. Why would someone make a movie if they could just explain it, right?

It's a good thing that my interpretation is consistent, logical, and likely--oh, wait. That last one doesn't even matter.

Sorry I forgot to put this part in. Its a list of things JJ does that I think show him as someone who you really don't need to look into any deeper.

1. Steps in ****.
2. Acts like one of the 3 stooges.
3. Has an animal fart in his face.
4. Kills the tension and drama during the end battle.
5. Comes out with stupid comment after comment after comment.

Ahmad Best says in TPM DVD that "There has never been a pure character just for humor in SW."

I think he was there to show off the first CGI character and get a few laughs while he was at it.

So none of that could have been there to teach you about not judging a book by it's cover?

Yet here you are engaging in a discussion about his deeper meanings, apparently just to let us know we are making something out of absolutely nothing. Wouldn't it be better for you to just not worry about it?

First off I knew about "not judging a book by it's cover" long before i saw TPM. And if anyone under the age of 6 need's Jar Jar Binks to help them understand what it means to "not judge a book by it's cover" then they need serious help.

This is getting old man, try using some of that acceptance JJ thought you and accept the fact I don't feel the same way you do. This place would be very boring if all we did was agree with each other. Please PM me if you want to talk more.

Cheers

I accept it, I'm just wondering why you continue to engage in a discussion you insist is meaningless.

Can't you just accept that others find meaning where you do not?
