The Theed reveal was the best single 'TPM' moment, and the best moment overall 'up to' ROTS -- previously I stated the Opera Scene in ROTS was my favorite complete PT scene, beginning to end.

That said, I think the tragic Immolation scene was the best overall single moment in the PT. It was long anticipated and yet unexpectedly raw, nakedly horrific but symbolically important to the Vader we came to know in the OT. It is almost equalled by the donning of the helmet and "the first breath" of the helmeted Vader on the operating room table.

One caveat -- the "high ground" lead up to the Immolation was sooooo totally bogus. But once Anakin meets his scripted destiny on the burning sands of Mustafar, Lucas left absolutely nothing to the imagination.

It appears that Sx3 is just an Alpha kind of fan and I'm an Omega type, I guess.

I can appreciate your POV. The Immolation was as you described and maybe a little more. It was; at it's core, the truth of it all... the seminal moment in Star Wars; that there are unimaginable consequences for poor judgement. But for as powerful as it came across, I was hampered while I sat there thinking about how stupid the events and dialogue were that preceded it.

The mechno-hand crawling up the bank. Vader lives!! Snapped me out of it nicely, and the reconstruction was nailed by Lucas. Vader writhing in pain, awake. The mask... the smoke above it, the high-pitched seal. The interior! I loved it up to the "Noooooo." I can can offer this, for those that speak Spanish and even for those that don't, since we know it by heart. Anyhow, the scene with Vader and Palpatine is absolutely perfect in the Spanish version. From the use of 'Si Maestro', to the spanish version of the 'Nooooo', it comes across differently because the actor is way more emotion than the esteemed JEJ.

And now, must expound the Alpha; as Chron so eloquently put it. What Maul's reveal represents to me now is the real beginning of the PT being catered to the OT. What it meant then, was similar... Maul is how we get to Ben training Father Skywalker. (In spite of the horrible writing/ planning/lack of continuity) I think the inclusion of Anakin's antics in the cockpit detracted from my view of the Jedi. If the ship was auto-pilot then he should have just left the hangar in it. The Jedi should have used the Force to chuck things at the Droidekas to do Ben's dialogue proud. But apart from that, DOTF was all that and a bag of chips...

EDIT:
Hard to top this look that says "You know what I'm here to do."

During my many theatrical viewings of the STAR WARS prequel movies, I didn't experience negative fan/negative audience reaction for the STAR WARS prequel movies.

Not standing in lines for tickets before the movies, not standing in the lobbies of the movie theaters before the movies, not during the movies and not in the lobbies of the movie theaters after the movies. Not at any time before/during/after the movies.

Each time was a positive experience. cool

I absolutely enjoy each of the six episodes of the STAR WARS SAGA, fully and equally.

I'm not influenced by and I'm not impressed with negativity/bashing/insults directed at anything STAR WARS/those responsible for the creation of anything STAR WARS. None of the negativity/bashing/insults have anything to do with me/the fan I am of STAR WARS/the appreciation I have for the heart/imagination/talents/skills/efforts of those responsible for the creation of anything STAR WARS. cool

Whats your best memory of watching any of the PT in the cinema?

For me it was the midnight showing of AOTC. Yoda whips out his lightsaber to fight Dooku. The place went mental. I've never seen anything like it, people were jumping up and down and screaming there heads off.

Anyone else?

I have to agree with you on that one.
I saw the movie 6 times in theaters and every time the same reaction from the audience, people REALLY loved it. Even people I knew who weren't fans but viewed the movie casually went crrrraaazy over that and went out and told all their friends about it. It was a pretty big deal. In fact it created so much buzz, that I remember afterward they released a new AOTC t.v. spot advertising the fact that Yoda lights up a saber in the movie!

Best thing that happened while watching any of the PT in the cinema?

Well, I remember when I saw TPM for the first time, I was probably about 7. The doors split open and Maul was standing there and shed that cloak and I turned to my dad and said in hushed voice, "Is that what Darth Vader looks like under the helmet?" shock He gave me a long-suffering look and gently explained. Now he's the one asking SW questions.

In AOTC, Yoda's lightsaber stint of course was a classic.

I had a few in ROTS actually, but only was able to afford to see it once at the cinema. We were standing in the line outside the doors, someone was dressed up as Vader and was getting pictures with kids and stuff. He was standing, stock still near the counter, and a family came up to buy their tickets. This little girl of a bout 6 or 7 started to walk up to this Darth Vader, thinking he was a STATUE. Suddenly, Darth-Vader-statue-man steps forward towards her. She goes down, stumbling in her haste to get away from the Evil Sith Lord. Her face was priceless! She must have thought he was going to force choke her and demand the location to the rebel base! And the best thing was, I was the only one who saw it, and all my SW buddies thought I was a very weird oddball, wetting myself with laughter, (albeit quietly!) pointing to this little girl who was picking herself up, while Darth Vader was tucked over his belly in hysterics as well! laugh

Then, when Yoda takes care of Palpatine's guards, awesome!

But I'll never forget Anakin's little run-in with the lava. He was burning, Obi-wan was saying his emotional lines, I twisted round in my seat, feeling a jab in the force. Two rows up, seven seats across there was a girl, 13 or something, BAULING her eyes out! laugh And she didn't look like the usual SW fan either, tons of make-up, dyed blonde hair, you know the type. I still think she was more upset that her scrap of Hayden flesh was practically roasting before her eyes! Will never forget that day! tongue

Oh, and Vader's first breath! So chilling! Gives me shivers even now thinking about it, let alone watching it! I found it awesome that Vader's 'second-first' breath is taken almost exactly as his son's 'first-first' breath, if you get what I mean!

I remember watching the extra features from TPM from the premiere. A whole packed cinema, they scream for about five minutes, quieten down (slightly.) The Producer, Rick McCallum comes in. They scream. He walks down to the front of the cinema. They scream. He grins and waits for them to quieten down again, then, "... This is awesome!" THEY SCREAM! (Plastic Lightsabers 'ignite' into the air) The lights dim and they quieten. "A long time ago in a Galaxy far, far away...." Then, STAR WARS! THEY SCREAM! (Cue plastic lightsabers.) The electricity of that one moment, even years after the footage had been filmed, made me wish I was there, every time I see it! Lol.

Oh, this is a great thread.

Okay, this is going to be long because these memories are near and dear to my heart. I saw TPM at the age of 18 at the midnight showing in a theater in southern California where I would end up seeing the rest of the PT, all at the midnight showings as well. TPM was the only time that I was not able to line up in the morning, hang out all day, and then see the movie at midnight. I had three best friends at the time, all from high school, and we were all SW freaks. My buddies had waited in line since the morning, and I honestly remember thinking at the time that waiting all day had been a little extreme on their parts. Boy was that silly.

I arrived at the theater at about three in the afternoon and the front of the building (as I'm sure had happened at theaters across the country) had been transformed into SW Woodstock. There were costumes galore and amazing camp sites with SW movies and games being played. John Williams amazing scores could be heard all across the area. Right away, I wished I had cleared my whole day and I vowed to do so for the next two films. I didn't hang onto the feelings of regret for very long; there was too much fun to be had. We made friends with most of the folks in line, watched the OT, played cards, laughed, and waited. I have never had a movie going experience like the one I had for the PT. It was a great half-day. After the sun had gone down, I ended up in a mock duel with a boy (he had to have been about 12) armed with a single saber and me armed with my buddy's double-ended saber. During the fight, my saber was accidentally broken in half! Talk about foreshadowing! I ended up hopping in my car (there were still several hours until the doors opened) and finding a toy store so that I could replace the saber.

Finally, we started to put the gear (tables, DVD's, original NES, Etc.) away. I will never forget the amazing feeling in my stomach as we walked in. We were back. I had a similar experience as is being described in this thread:

Lucas/20th logo: cheers
"A long time ago...": dead silence
The SW logo and theme song for the crawl: An eruption. On our feet, sabers ignited for a few moments. Amazing. I can still feel it and hear it as I write this. The theater went NUTS! It was such a group experience, being there with those folks. Good vibes in the room...

Okay the movie. For me, when the ship was blown up and Obi and Qui Gon bolt up and ignite their sabers, the thought that kept echoing in my mind was, "We are SO back." Back to the amazing universe that defined imagination for me as a child and permeated everything in my life that was remotely creative. I didn't care if it was good or bad. For a few hours, we were back home in the SW universe. For me and the theater, it was the lightsaber work that really stands out. We had never seen Jedi do that. I have been a martial arts practitioner since I was a child and I was in heaven. Fully trained Jedi (even Jedi in training it seemed) were like one man wrecking crews. It was pretty amazing. My theater went nuts when (sorry folks who don't like this moment) Maul finally met his end. My friends and I found a Denny's afterwards and it was movie analysis until 3 am. I had a college class the next day and I made it to class on time, exhausted but with a HUGE smile on my face. Being a little tired was beyond worth it.

AOTC found me living in Las Vegas when it was going to be released. I made plans to drive back to SoCal for a few days to see the film with my buddies at midnight in the same theater as TPM. This time was going to be different. We planned. We had a tightly coordinated effort for a group of about eight to wait in line from 8am until midnight. This time, we decided as a group that costumes were mandatory. I decided on my favorite EU character and went about designing a Thrawn costume. I woke early to apply my blue make up. I had red sunglasses and in retrospect, it might not have been up to 501st standards, but I was pretty pleased with it. The BEST part of my day was when my friend and I arrived at the theater at 7am. We had one very nice party in front of us and we got set up. A few moments later, two guys arrived to join the first group and we saw no problem letting them get in font of us. Before they joined their party and before we started talking with their group as a whole, in fact the FIRST thing one of them said to me when he and hs friend arrived was, "Admiral", with a head nod, to which I simply responded, "Gentlemen", and nodded back. It was a nice SW wink between fans.

The SW Woodstock atmosphere was the same. You had to get to know the parties around you because everyone was sending one person out here and there to buy supplies and those people needed to be able to get back in line without a hassle. Also, some folks had brought their game systems. I believe we had a Genesis and a Turbographics 16 (kickin' it old school). It was nice to share with the people around you. This was the safe for food, drinks, beer, smokes, etc. I don't remember hearing one person raise their voice in anger the whole day. We were all there for the same purpose.

It was a long day, but a fun one, and one of the best of my life. Of my three friends, only two made it that day, as we had had a falling out with one of them and he had moved away. Eventually, the sun went down. We found some dinner. We waited. It came time to put the gear in the car. The doors opened again. I had that amazing feeling in my stomach again. We found seats. We screamed. We were silent. We stood for the opening crawl.

The movie...Again, we were SO back. It felt great to see what we were able to see (Yoda fight, the CW, etc.). The major crowd reactions were for some of the dialogue - "Why do I get the feeling you're going to be the death of me?", "I want to go home and rethink my life." The crowd went nuts when the Jedi all powered up their sabers in the arena. That whole section, from the arena fight until the last few moments of the film were met with cheers. My theater started screaming when Yoda started walking into the hanger and reached a fever pitch when he Force pulled his saber. Again, to Denny's afterward and this time I had planned it so that I didn't have to be anywhere the next day.

ROTS is such a different animal. Same theater. Same planning to spend the whole day there. Same Woodstock vibe. I had only been in Vegas for a year from 2001-2002 and had long since moved back to SoCal. This time we had a group of about 10-12 during the day, with some folks joining us later. At the time of the release, I had just broken up with my girlfriend of about two years. We had been talking since and slowly trying to spend time together again. She was in attendance that day. A natural brunette, her hair at the time was dyed more of a red. She agreed to dress up as Mara Jade that day, since I was Palpatine (ROTJ era). There was tension, but mostly we had a fun day together with a group of people we were close to at the time, including one of my original buddies from TPM times. The other had simply stopped hanging out with us by that point.

It was an amazing day from 8am until midnight. My group ended up being asked to take a lot of pictures with children that day. There were some other folks there in costume as well. We all ended up taking a lot of photos with people who asked to have their picture taken with us. That was the standout point of the day for me. We were bringing joy to people. SW has brought joy to my life and the PT brought three amazing days of joy that I will never forget. This thread is about that joy. If any part of what I have written about brings up the joy that you experienced seeing the PT, hang on to that and try to dwell in that feeling. Those people had fun having their picture taken with some SW nuts. We had fun hanging around outside all day, playing make-believe and being kids again for a day. I can still feel the exhilaration that was running through my body as I looked at the line full of like-minded folks who were also there for a day's worth of joy.

The movie was the culmination of 20 years of being a SW fan. I can point out all of the things that could have been done better, but I'm not going to do that. I have a relationship with the saga. Like a relationship with a person, the object of my love is not perfect. There are flaws. I try not to focus on them. I focus on the god times and the happy memories. This is not to get by or to put my head in the sand. This is because I would describe my love of the SW films as a relationship. I like to have relationships with the art/entertainment that inspires me. I try not to do that thing that is so easy to do in our culture: you wait and wait and pine for some piece of art and entertainment. You finally get it and you wear it out and throw it away. Like that song you download and play over and over until you can't remember why you wanted it in the first place because you can't get the feeling back of when it was new. Now, when I write that I have a relationship with SW, I don't mean that I sleep with the DVD's under my pillow. I mean that SW is something that I want to have around me for the whole of my life. Not every day but not something I want to burn out on and never watch again.

I'm sorry for that (potentially disturbing) extended metaphor. ROTS wrecked me. From the first notes of "Anakin's Betrayal", I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was one thing to joke about how cool it would be to see the Jedi purge, it was another thing to see the movie. There was silence in the theater. I remember when Darth Vader ignited and burnt and several people around me whispered something like, "Oh my God." We all knew he was going to burn, but... finally seeing it was something else.

My main memory from ROTS was losing it during the movie, as much from the film as from all of the joy leading up to it, and that being the final SW film, and sitting next to the woman I had broken up with a few weeks earlier unable to hold in my emotions from a space opera, and finally seeing all of the things I had speculated about for decades, and John William's amazing score for that installment, and from the sheer weight of my life finally leading up to that moment in entertainment, and from how SW had been such a big part of the group of friends that I had seen TPM with and now I was down to one member and myself from that crew, etc. It was a very personal experience. Yes, I know that it's just a SW movie. To paraphrase Boba for a moment: It was worth a lot TO ME.

We (my group of 12) emerged from that theater late at night. I had to go to work the next day, but I didn't care. We all looked like we had been through a war. Several people from the group later told me how much they hated ROTS, and okay, but I saw their faces that night. Maybe it was only in the theater, but that viewing had been special and it had affected them.

My ex from that night and I later made up and today she's my wife (she actually came by my work as I was writing this during lunch and surprised me). We have a one-year-old boy and I tried and tried to get Anakin for his name, but my wife wouldn't have it (maybe for the next one...). My remaining buddy from the old gang and I had a major falling out a few years ago and as a result, now my wife and I really only see one person from that group of 12. Those times, like the Saga, have come and gone. The PT is responsible for three stand out days from my memories of those years. I have never had that Woodstock like experience with the release of a movie again.

So, I hope this post is still on topic. I was supposed to write about the experience of seeing the PT in the theater. For me, those three days and what was going on personally are all wrapped up with the experience of the films themselves. I hope this post isn't too personal, but I was excited by the topic.

When Jango Feet says he was hired by Tyrranus in AOTC. Since all of the toys had already given it away that Dooku and Tyrranus were the same person it was at this moment that I realized that the clone army, and the Clone Wars were all part of the Siths plan from the beginning. And then when I saw ROTS and saw how that same clone army had a preplanned scheme in their training on how to take out the Jedi I finally saw Sidious's whole plan.

George Lucas may not be the best director but as far as I'm concered he's the best story teller of our time.
