Now Valorum gets booted frmo the Senate, basically. He is also stabbed in the back by the Naboo'ists (Padme, Palpatine, Jar-Jar et al.) Being an ex-chancellor, who some obviously supported, would it not have made more sense for HIM to have started the separatist uprising, with him as the leader?
Think about it.
Sidious overtakes the Senate. Valorum, is angered, and starts the separatist uprising like dooku did, except this time the audience can relate to it much better because they know who Valorum is; they know why he did the uprising (he wants power and 'justice') and why he wants padme dead! (she voted him off!) Instead you got dooku, who many people even today have no idea why he did what he did, where he came from, etc.
Thoughts?

The thing that seals the deal with Dooku's character for me is the fact that he willingly left the Jedi Order. Yes, I'll probably agree that there was more room for developing the intricacies of why Dooku chose this course of action as well as a more in depth look at his role with the separatists, but ultimately I think Dooku's place in the film nicely emphasis just how entwined the Jedi were with the Republic, and how in turn the problematic aspects of one institution automatically helped contribute to the fall of the other.

No, Valorum would not have made a good leader for the Separatists. He wasn't a stooge of Palpatines. You forget, Sitara...the ENTIRE THING was nothing but a stage in which Palpatine could gain in power. The Separatist movement didn't really exist as an actual opposing body. It was led by Palpatine the entire time, using others as his voice. Valorum actually believed in the Republic, and would never have joined Palpatine. Since it was all Palpatine's plot, if Valorum didn't join him, he wouldn't allow him to lead the Separatists. Nute Gunray and then Count Dooku both took orders from Palpatine, with Gunray thinking it was just a Sith called Darth Sidious. Valorum meanwhile, was the biggest supporter of Padme and Naboo against the TF, why would he suddenly become the TF's leader? It doesn't make sense. Any leader of the Separatist movement would have to be in league with Palpatine...Valorum wasn't, so he would not have been a good choice at all.

Valorum would have made a great addition to the rebellion though. I always hoped for a scene in ROTS where Senator Amidala meets with Valorum again and basically tells him she may have made a mistake on that fateful day some 13 years ago.

That(Valorum reluctantly joining the rebellion) would have been a great way to bring the whole PT full circle.

Oh definitely as a charter member of the Rebellion...That I could totally see...just not as a Separatist leader, as that would necessarily have required collusion with Palpatine, so I just don't see it.

No, we agree. The CIS was a dupe organization. A front for Palpatine. The rebellion was genuine. Valorum would fit right into that.
I would've liked to see a short scene of Valorum/Bail/Amidala meeting where it takes some coaxing by Bail to support Amidala, someone who basically destroyed Valorum's career.
In other words, he gives up his personal greivances for a greater cause.
Nice little character touches for two, Valorum and Amidala, who need it.
Maybe Amidala starts off this Delegation of 20000 thing and it stalls, and only when Valorum throws his weight behind it does it take off?
You know the interesting thing about all this? In the original TPM shooting script, there was a short scene of Organa in the senate showing him rushing to support the vote of no-confidence when Amidala proposed it. I don't know if they ever shot that with Adrian Dunbar or not.
Imagine bringing all of that full circle with these former political rivals coming together to start something when they may not like each other that much.

I think Valorum already proved to be an ineffective leader and would have taken the plot off course if he formed the Separatists. I think Valorum served his purpose to show how dysfunctional the Republic and how ripe it was for a takeover.

Its unfair to judge Valorum as Supreme Chancellor, as the reason he was ineffective was due to Senator Palpatine already being engaged in his private campaign to tear the Republic apart. He already had enough of the Senators bought off so he could become the next Supreme Chancellor, after all...

Your mostly right. Dooku knew that Palpatine=Sidious and that the war was a fluke. I think Nute Gunray thought the Separatist movement was for real, as was the war. You can tell by Dooku feed him all of his bull in AOTC during the Separatist council scene.

If he were a few years younger, Valorum would have made a great leader for the Alliance once the Rebellion really got moving. But I can't help but think that the poor guy must have been a little jaded after TPM. If anyone asked him to display some of his legendary leadership qualities during the Galactic Civil War he'd probably tell all those whining former Senators to take a hike, after the way they shafted him in favor of an evil Sith Lord turned Senator turned Chancellor turned Emperor.

Jango10, I think its obvious that while Dooku knew the whole thing was a sham, Nute Gunray didn't. I agree that he thought it was real...but, Gunray was never really the leader the Separatists. Even in TPM, it is Darth Sidious pulling the strings, not Gunray. Valorum would not have gotten involved with a mysterious Sith, he would have informed the Jedi Council immediately upon being contacted by any Sith Lord. Palpatine could use Gunray as a puppet, he would not have been able to manipulate Valorum in the same way. Unlike the Trade Federation, Valorum had friends who wore Jedi robes. Even if he had been disenfranchised with the Republic, I doubt Valorum would have betrayed the Jedi by ever serving a Sith Lord.
